  1. Really sorry to hear that people travelling in / thinking of travelling haven't got a chance :( BUT, so glad that the local folk and students seem to have made it their own :sunny: Imho, it should have been students-only from the get-go - it seems only fair to me when it's their uni... It should be an unforgettable gig, can't wait to hear the reports :)
  2. An interesting review, thanks! And interestingly it sounds a lot more negative in places than the final sentence would suggest... Really great point about Paradise vs Viva - I don't see the difference at all, so was amazed at the overall reaction on here, (comparisons with Fix You are moot for me though).
  3. Eh? I've read no posts about the gig, and assure you I'm not offended for anyone. I'm responding to 42's blog content, with one or two past personal experiences taken into consideration too.
  4. I personally don't care how 'not for public viewing' the band and crew thought this was, this is completely out of order to the fans. It happened, it wasn't the fans' fault - it should have been dealt with. There's enough rough treatment of fans by security and ticket checkers etc at festivals, without the band's staff getting in on the act too, by ordering them out the arena. Methinks some of the Coldplay touring staff need to reconnect with how the 'punters' feel, and what they go through. Some of them really do live inside their own little bubble a lot of the time it seems. Without those punters, there would be no Coldplay at all. (Aimed not at the band, but at the crew here.)
  5. I'd vote 'yes' but I don't understand 'Will call only' (I get the general idea of course, but no idea why you would need to pick up the tickets from the venue). Just insist on ID that matches the name on the ticket (purchaser only of course, not everyone in the party).
  6. I've used ebay for seven years for an awful lot of concert tickets without any problems whatsoever. Check the sellers out carefully before buying and it is fine. I wouldn't use getmein even if it was the last, or only, resort. I use Ticketmaster when I have to for tickets but I don't trust them (and personally believe they're at the heart of the stitch up of tickets with touts). I reckon tickets go directly from Ticketmaster to touts and/or letmein, where they sell them for hundreds of pounds more. I'm prepared to 'deal with devil' by buying face value tickets from Ticketmaster, but won't go near them for anything else.
  7. In December 2008 they had two initial dates, and then added a third due to demand. You could buy up to four tickets. No-one (that I know of - and I know a LOT of people who went) missed out, either on the initial sales or on resales to friends or fellow fans. The touts and resellers-for-profit did NOT generally make a killing on those gigs, because the real fans, if they looked hard enough, could get them at decent prices. Fast-forward three years and it seems a huge number of tickets have gone to touts and resellers-for-profit, while many fans haven't been able to get tickets. This is disgusting. Sick and disabled people who need more than one person to help them attend, could not even go to this concert. Families with children (yes, you do need more than one parent when you are with at least one young child for peace of mind!!) could not even go. Groups of friends of two or more could not go together. Presumably this was anti-tout/reselling-for-profit, but look at the listings - this has not worked. The only thing it's done is screw over the true fans/the sick and disabled/families/those hoping to take children/groups of friends. Absolutely disgusting. Many thanks, is that the only one at present, does anyone know? With only around 70 signatures so far it makes it a long journey from here on in, and I think something has to be done now, but I'll add it to my sig :)
  8. I think it's absolutely shocking. The touts have still obviously got all the tickets they wanted. The people penalised are: - The sick/disabled who need more than one helper - People with children (if you're responsible you cannot take children who are even old enough to attend the gig if there is only one parent guaranteed to look after them at any point - it's too risky) - People who wish to attend with more than one friend The winners are: - Ticketmaster. No sales of three meant they sold out the tickets in record time. (Try selling every single odd fourth-tier ticket in a minute). - The touts (both in advance and outside the arena on the night). They clearly got a huge percentage of the tickets anyway, while real fans couldn't get them. It's much easier for them to deal with them in guaranteed 'twos' rather than have to deal with the odd one or threes that come from genuine fans who bought in good faith and then had to sell their tickets, or the odd spare, (and are often glad to do so just at face value). - The promoters. - The band (though I'm sure they personally didn't know what was happening, they have still got a record sell-out gig and more publicity. And their team must have okayed this method of sale). I'm disgusted.
  9. I miss it too, terribly (and for always) 42 is one of their best songs imho, on record, but live it is twice the track - spine tingling. I'll be amazed if the new record contains anything as remarkable. The same goes for Square One...bring them back please...
  10. What bad albums did The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Queen release? I'm honestly mystified here (U2 I will accept with no question though!) You haven't heard it, so what on Earth are you talking about?
  11. I've edited out (some of) your (brutally nonsensical) nonsense for you. There's a third way. You have eyes - open them. Coldplay release a heavily story-teasing single from the album which pleases the masses (including many fans), and then once the album drops it all fits into place for the hardcore as well, many of whom then turn around and say 'what a brilliant idea it was not to spoil the album concept earlier on'. There's a fourth way too. Interested?
  12. I suspect he might be, but because he's younger than me that would make things VERY awkward to explain at family gatherings... I don't know about the rest of the world, but in England 'haven't you ever watched Doctor Who?' doesn't really cut the mustard for explaining parentage
  13. Great analogy with The Simpsons! Pope is tricky and you need a mentor (at least I do :() I haven't been able to get through much of it since A-levels (high school). That's great to know, thanks! As far as I'm concerned Noel's always been an incredible songwriter, but I know that only really from the first few albums, I gave up after the singles from 'Giants'. My biggest problem with them I think was that while they had the songs they didn't have the musicianship, and certainly not the singer. Musician-wise, coming from the home of The Smiths, Stone Roses et al even the records weren't good enough. But the vid of Falling Down makes me REALLY curious now, I'll check them out more :)
  14. I think it ruined her weekend. Afaik she has absolutely no input on musical matters, and I can take a pretty good guess the band will continue on their musical odyssey whatever people think - fans or critic alike - so what's the point of that kind of sentiment?
  15. That is only three letters different from my Dad's name :o
  16. It's a real pleasure talking to you, but I completely disagree with your interpretation. I see Every Teardrop as underreacting about things - dismissing just a tear as nothing, rather than the emotional waterfall it may be. Setting your emotions free, totally free, not denying them - a very healthy message imo - is the story of the song. The butterfly on a wheel is a helpless, caught insect, at your mercy. It is beautiful. You squash it because you can, and possibly because it suits your needs. In fact you squash it (in the case of the Rolling Stones) because it is all of those things.
  17. Er, no it's not! Not until the fat lady sings (and btw that fat lady is me in drag and a fat suit, and trust me you put your life in your hands if you ask to see that! :laugh3:) I hated the waterfall mention on the first listen (because I still don't like that song very much), but after later listenings (and ignoring that) it combines really well poetically with the butterfly line. How do they mean almost the same thing though? Thanks a lot EdPlay, I'll check that out now for sure :)
  18. Wow! Thanks so much guys, I'd never heard that Oasis song, I have to say it's probably the best thing I've ever heard from them (only really heard the first two albums played on continual repeat at uni bars), what a stormer!! I'll have to look more at their back catalogue. That is real, proper, rock and roll :) The modern knowledge of the phrase is due to the Rolling Stones' court case in the 60s, which was pretty era-defining in England, and I'm guessing that's what all the tracks on this thread reference.
  19. It's the worst I've ever seen (lurking here since late 2004 I think, and joined in early 06 to get the multimedia from the recent shows I'd been to). I'm shocked.
  20. Anyone know of the literary or historical links to the phrase? (I'm disregarding the 2007 film as it sounds rubbish and irrelevant :P) I grew up with this (which at the time led me back to the Stones, and then to the original source). It's a bit of a lame mix (certainly over laptop speakers) - the decent one is the 12" limited edition vinyl extended which I have and is stunning. Anyway, here it is (non-fans of 90s soft-'goth' don't bother watching - you will hate it!! :)): [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajEwxCH8P1Q]Mission - Butterfly on a wheel. - YouTube[/ame]
  21. I completely agree with you :) I read an interesting post on the lyrics somewhere. It said something like there's been a shift from songs with Chris' singing and lyrics at the centre of everything, to a more abstract, ethereal even, concept of a song. So, while the lyrics and singing have driven most of their songs in the past, this and ETiaW (which I still don't like but have grown much more tolerant of) are more like an abstract painting - the main message gets through, but in a dreamy way. A song grown from an idea, rather than a song built from a story. I think that's what makes this song beautiful.* The lyrical and vocal driven songs are still there (i.e. most of the rest of the tracks so far from this era - with Major Minus being a sort of midway point between the two). But they've developed this other side. And I see that as very brave myself. And the genius in it is that they've made a song that, without any lyrics that most could relate to, or any complete story, most of the public will love, and should prove to be a big hit. * I only realised after I typed that - that, yes!! - I'd really said that this song's beautiful. It's just hit me subconsciously. Wow.

Nice to meet you SuperF :) Ignore the madness of today - never seen it this bad, even the aftermath of the ETiaW release was saner (and I never thought I'd say that!!) - it will all be quiet and peaceful again in a few weeks, I'm sure :) I visited the lovely Shrewsbury earlier this summer and can't wait to return - a delightful place - I'm jealous of you!
  23. Surely this song's just a part of the story that we'll get in full on the album? I understand what you're saying, but I really get a sense with Paradise that not only does it fit into the big picture on the album it will live as well. For me that's one of the most exciting things about it, they've just given us a taste. I don't follow you at all here, maybe you should come back when you've given Paradise as long as you have ETiaW (or at least more than 12 or so hours) and make your call then!
  24. It was a HUGE shock at first, but I've only listened to it four times, and now I rather like it :) What seemed like a one-trick song at first seems to be much, much more complex now. Whether or not it becomes a favourite for me is far too early to say. I'd suspect not, but then I disliked Viva for months until it suddenly just 'clicked' and Violet Hill took about 30 listens of utter shock before it did the same. Since then it's been top 10 for me (unlike Viva, though I do like it). I still am uncomfortable about the pop production of the chorus, but I'd say R42 was right - this is a 'massive' tune. It may not come into its own until it's seen live. Also, I can see a real place for this on the setlist - it's just such a contrast to anything else they have. I can already imagine this going into Viva, or Clocks, even Lost - just about anything. So, I'll reserve judgement on the score. But for now I'm happy enough - a very brave move by the band :sunny:
