What do you think of cover artwork??
Exacccctly. What I admire most about the first three is that they're simple and really pretty elegant (X&Y is probably my favorite album cover of all time, regardless of artist). I like understatement personally, but I like how the singular image kind of became a visual signifier of the actual title, whereas now the actual title seemingly has to be the forefront of the visual representation.

Coldplay: The Billboard Cover Story (and Chris Martin Q&A) - all pg.1
I was really impressed with this article, especially as someone interested in record promotion and management. I loved that it focused on Dave Holmes, almost primarily...but I've determined we have very different ideas about what's best to promo a record . I guess I'm still kind of let down that they premiered songs live first, that long before the record, as much as I enjoyed seeing them myself and listening to them now. Holmes talks about how this follows a potential "new wave" of record promotion via East Asia as taken up by Kanye last year, and how that hearing songs before the record comes out builds excitement and makes people comfortable in that they "know what they're getting." I think that serves casual fans and new converts, but does a lot of a diehard fanbase (as we are :D) something of a disservice. I know from years on this board and as part of other diehard band fanbases that a lot "veterans" seem to enjoy swearing off everything (leaks, promo videos etc) until the actual release date and devouring everything new all at once to savor the surprise. I think for a lot of diehards, the slow leak and the sort of omnipresence and huge build-up to a record composed of spoilers takes a lot of the fun out of a new record (mainly the music, as it seems we'll already have heard about 50% of this album in some form several months before it hits shops). I don't know, I'm a total nerd with this kind of stuff, but I just think they're concentrating so much on all the new fans they might get and not really completely understanding what I believe to be what a large portion of diehard fans prefer. I feel like some sort of balance is less of a risk, but financially, I guess their method could pay off  Also, I don't think the "old model" of single 6 weeks before an album is dead like he says it is, I think what's dead is legal downloading, no matter what the timeframe of release

My least favorite of the four I think is VLV. This one, though different, I quite like, but I don't think anything will top the elegant simplicity of the first three for me. I actually really like the font as a font, but maybe not for use on a Coldplay cover. It strikes me as overly whimsical, but I think it works.

Frightened Rabbit
I just saw them the other night opening for Death Cab for Cutie in Brooklyn, and I was blown away. I knew nothing of them or about them, but from the first song I knew that they were going to be one of the better openers I've seen in my time. The following day I listened to all their albums on Spotify and now intend to buy all three soon

Get along well enough to trade sexual favors, I guess  I saw the tweet when I was having a meeting at my bank and I just couldn't laugh but needed to so badly...

Further proof that at least some of The Strokes are on very good terms with some of Coldplay :wink3:

He attended one of their shows in NYC on the FIOE tour too, with Gwyneth. Apparently they hung out with the band after, but in some interview, Julian was reluctant to call them "friends" just because of that. Oh well, I just have a nerdy like for having my favorite band talk about my other favorite band :P. Actually, when I met Will, we talked about The Strokes a bit .
-
Gwyneth...
I think that commenter was probably just kidding...because that's something the media WOULD do, take a jokey tweet like that from her and turn it into how they must be on the brink of divorce for the 453654756th time.

Gwyneth...
I'm a closet Coach fan, so I'm kind of sad her campaign is only going to be for Asian and European markets :P AND THAT IS THE BEST TWEET EVER.

The Strokes
Do you happen to know which interview this was? I know there was the 100% Fuse one from 2005 right after X&Y where they mentioned how much they loved The Strokes, but if there's another one available I'd love to see it :wacky: This is the quote from the interview I know, but it's not really the same idea that you're talking about: "Sometimes you meet people when you're on a bit of a downer and they pick you up…you know, what's the people called in boxing when you're out there taking the punches and trying to give the punches, certain people give you the confidence in the breaks between rounds, and Ian McCulloch did it to us…and just last night, some of The Strokes were doing it to us as well. The Strokes are a classic band, you know. Sometimes you need that from your peers: a bit of encouragement."

^I maintain that The Strokes and Coldplay have a lot of similarities in a lot of realms. But I think you're the only person that would really agree with me on that :P

The Strokes
Perrine! I never gave you my Skype name! :stunned: Sorry, I've been running around lately. I'll send it to you on Facebook now. FYI, Is This It was first released ten years ago this Saturday, July 30. It's the Australian release, whereas it took another month to come out in the UK and another month and a half after that to come out in the US, but there you go. 10 years of the best debut album ever (if you ask me) :bigcry:

The Strokes
I have no idea--Albert and Nick etc usually DJ for more private events. Part of the reason I want to go is that I'd be really interested in hearing what he had to play. I bet even if it's not my vibe (I mean, who plays alternative rock to hipster Brooklyn parties?), it probably wouldn't be shit. UGH, I really just want to go with someone who would get why I'm there and wouldn't make me feel like I should be dancing or getting drunk or whatever it is people do at these things :P. Every Strokes person I know is either too young or too far away .
-
The Strokes
The only time I give girly screams is when Coldplay or The Strokes are in front of me :P BTW, Albert Hammond Jr is doing a DJ set in Brooklyn this Saturday night at midnight for $5...I would go if I had anyone to go with, I think, even though it's not really my scene. Anything for Albert .

Aww, I love your video, Jo!. I love that it actually shows the crowd, too, even though it makes it look kind of tame :P. My videos have no sense of the crowd whatsoever, not even the singing, which kind of sucks, but the audio's good, I suppose: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPl1K1X-4ss]Machu PIcchu--The Strokes, Oxegen Festival, July 8, 2011 - YouTube[/ame] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=we8Cq8ry85o]You Only Live Once--The Strokes, Oxegen Festival, July 8 2011. - YouTube[/ame] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcNVImYp6cA]What Ever Happened?--The Strokes, Oxegen Festival, July 8, 2011 - YouTube[/ame] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqtSh15kfMU]Gratisfaction--The Strokes, Oxegen Festival, July 8 2011 - YouTube[/ame] My camera actually got some water damage during that set from the rain, I think, so now I have to go about seeing if I can get it repaired .

Q302 - September 2011 - 'Laughing Boys' article (Coldplay) - Scan and transcript on pg. 8
Thanks for the transcript, Mich! All I have to say is "who knows." The Digital Spy thing and the Q thing are two totally different things anyway, and the Q bit doesn't give us a ton of concrete information like the Digital Spy bit does. I never believe anything 100% until it's officially announced, but for right now, October 24 seems like a logical date to me, and I'm not surprised for a millisecond that there are rumors that ETIAW, MM, etc are going to be on LP5, so I'm not really complaining. The only thing I really hope isn't true is the Mylo Xyloto thing . ^For the record, YES, EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS POST. I completely understand that they'll never put out Parachutes or AROBTTH pt. 2, but at the same time, stripping down to four instruments in a room again is when they're at their strongest, if you ask me.

Q302 - September 2011 - 'Laughing Boys' article (Coldplay) - Scan and transcript on pg. 8
I completely agree that releasing ETIAW (and MM) again is total overkill, but at the same time...I always figured it would be an album track, so I'm not surprised and didn't have a hope for things to be otherwise, where it was just a one-off, fun summer release. I think Coldplay are pretty precious with what they officially release and aren't the sort to leave off a song they're obviously proud of simply because they've already put it out as a single and EP track. Annoying, sure, because I'd MUCH rather exchange a song that we've already heard out for something brand-new, but I just don't see them being the sort to do that these days.

Q302 - September 2011 - 'Laughing Boys' article (Coldplay) - Scan and transcript on pg. 8
OCTOBER 24! :cheesy: Oh well, I was 20 days off with my prediction :P I think I might be one of the only Coldplayers, or at least among Coldplayers that I know, that's happy that ETIAW seems to be on the album...I just really love that song :uhoh: But LP5 being called "Mylo Xyloto".... "MX" as a song/album title is SO similar to "X&Y" as a song/album title...come on, guys.

The Strokes
FIOE is my second-favorite album of theirs (it would be my favorite if ITI wasn't basically the best thing I've ever heard in my life), and I would probably do lots of illegal and immoral things to hear them play Ize of the World (in my top three Strokes songs EVER) or Vision of Division or Electricityscape or Razorblade live :bomb:. I think a lot of the Angles stuff sounds pretty awesome live as well, even if the album as a whole doesn't touch their first three for me. You're So Right is even better live for me, for example, and I think they're doing a great job with Machu Picchu, even though they had to tweak it slightly to make it work. From the times I've seen them on this tour and the streamed gigs of this tour I've watched, though, I feel like they have yet to really nail a live performance of Under Cover of Darkness, which is a shame, because that's one of my favorite Strokes songs ever. EDIT: Ooh, that was my 9,000th post   I guess that shows how times have changed: my 9,000th post on a beloved Coldplay forum is in a Strokes thread

I might be late to the party, but XFM just tweeted this re: release dates:

The Strokes
JESUS, PERRINE, YOUR PICTURES ARE AMAZING :dead: I'm glad you had a good time! But yeah, like Katie said, they never play much longer than an hour and a half max, which I think is kind of lame. And as for their sound...I really think they need to fire their sound team and get a new one. They've had way too many issues on that front this year alone, and the gig I went to in 2006 sounded pretty bad too. I don't think it's the band, I think it's whoever sets up for them. I can't believe they didn't play Taken For A Fool! It's the new single, what's up with that? :freak: Maybe we can talk more about it on Skype tomorrow! :D

The Strokes
Oh yeah, I completely agree that festivals and concerts are completely different things :D. I guess they really are hard to compare, because they involve such different components like crowd and venue and everything. I have a hard time deciding which I prefer, since I've had three of the best weekends of my life at Coachella and Sweetlife and Oxegen. I guess I think I'd prefer to see my all-time favorite artists, like Coldplay and The Strokes, at their own gigs in concert venues, whereas I love that you can go around and see a ton of bands in one day at festivals and experience so many different things and bands that you normally wouldn't. I guess it ultimately comes down to what a person prefers personally, but part of my favorite thing about "real" concerts is that at the very front, you're a part of this crew of people that know all the words just like you and love the band in the same way that you do, whereas that's less likely to happen at festivals just because there are so many more people there for different reasons. All the same, Oxegen was the best time I've ever seen Coldplay, so who knows what that says about what I like best :P
-
The Strokes
I strongly believe in the crowd influencing a band's performance, and at actual concerts as opposed to festivals, most of the people there, especially in the very front, are big fans of that band and sing along and go crazy for the actual music, which I think can help feed the musicians' performances. At festivals, you have more of a mixed bag of a crowd, usually, and while festival crowd responses can be great, I feel maybe it's slightly different from the type of crowd that goes to a one-off concert and relates to the people onstage in a different way. Also, yeah, sound I think is better for concerts, since they're usually indoors or in amphitheaters and there are only two bands to set up for and soundcheck on that stage as opposed to 10+.

The Strokes
Nah, I know what you mean--I mean, I'd love it if they were a bit more animated or whatever, but at the same time, I don't think that just because they're not dancing all over the place doesn't mean they're not having a good time, either. In their earlier days, I think their antics were mostly fueled by alcohol and drugs, and I think now their tact is mostly "focus on the playing first," which I like a lot :D. Despite sound issues and occasional fuck-ups, I think they're a great live band and great musical performers when they (namely Julian) don't let the nerves get to them. (and I know you had fun at The Strokes :D. It's just a shame that you repeated my Coachella experience exactly, because after that I felt pretty much the same way as you until I got to see them again and again).
