  1. Most people don't seem to understand my musical similarity connections . I get immediately instantaneously reminded of other songs or bands when I hear something new, and then I write/post about it, and most people are like "OMFG what are you on ." Really, though, Arcade Fire. I'm serious. And I think that's why I love it. But if the lyrics are actually "crocodiles ticking around the world" or whatever, I think it loses some points in my book
  2. This is an epic song. I get a really Arcade Fire-y vibe from it. For some reason that was my first thought, even after only hearing the poor-quality version from Rock Im Park. But I bet some people will say I'm being blasphemous or something, comparing it to AF :P
  3. I love that she's making fun of herself on Twitter :wacky:. I hope it'll show people that she seems to not take herself as seriously or be as tight-assed as most people thing she is. Jimmy said this today: "Need NKOTB Tour jacket from 1991! Please send all pricing, address and info of your history with said jacket to @GwynethPaltrow."
  4. I'm glad I'm not the only one...but I know we were both in rare form last night because of this gig :P Even though I'm in more of a Coldplay mood than ever, I kind of want to Strokeify my avi & sig...I had Strokes-related stuff on here like YEARS ago, but other than that I've never had anything but Coldplay stuff because this is a Coldplay forum. But ever since all the Christmas Lights stuff in December, my avi and sig have been so fangirly
  5. UGH, what's going on with this? :bigcry: My mom was iffy about coming with me or not because of the date, so I waited to buy tickets, and now you can't buy tickets on Fandango anymore and the official site is down  I guess if it's not back up in a few days, I'll call the cinema itself and see if I can book directly through them, or if they have any more information on whether the whole thing is cancelled or not.
  6. Yeah, I thought that the "MX" thing was a mess-up too, because they also displayed the title "Hurts Like Heaven" as well. I thought maybe "MX" was the intro bit or something, but I really think the broadcasters just got confused. "MX" is definitely something, though, whether a song we haven't heard yet or the real title of the song or the title of...something else. It's painted on the instruments and obviously has been on the website for a long time, like Angie said :D. That said, I'd prefer it to be called "MX," even though I have no idea what that means, just because it sounds cooler than "Hurts Like Heaven"
  7. What the hell is a xylobryte? :uhoh: Even Google doesn't know :P
  8. I agree, despite all the immature spats and drama at both ends of the spectrum, it's fun to be back :wacky:. I took a pretty long hiatus for at least a year, and recently have really only been posting in The Strokes' thread, because they're my other big music loves and they've been more relevant lately. But Coldplaying is kind of a place I think I'm always going to return to :nice:. I like having constructive (key word: constructive) conversations about music, and regardless of the band, I think Coldplaying is a great place to do it.
  9. I tried since 2PM PST, but that stream never worked properly on my computer in any browser for some reason, so I ended up streaming the whole thing on my phone, which I found endlessly hilarious . Julian's voice was terrible, though--I think he has a cold. Too bad they have another gig tomorrow night...:uhoh: Also, side note that I find hysterical: Nick's wife Amanda tweeted like 30 minutes before Nick needed to be onstage that the four of them in their family were stuck in LA traffic on the way to the gig. The band took the stage 10 minutes late as well. That time was probably built in, but Nick looked to be laughing when they finally got up there. I don't know, there's something hysterical to me about a band maybe getting onstage late because their lead guitarist was stuck in traffic on the way to the gig, driving a minivan full of his wife and young children
  10. I think that kind of hits the nail on the head as to why VLV will never be up to par with the first two for me, as much as I love it: it's moving in too many directions at once for me. That's fine for some people, but I feel like Parachutes, AROBTTH, and even X&Y all have this common theme/sound/vibe that all the tracks contribute towards, and that's something I love in albums across the board. VLV is great in its own right to me, but it's...kind of ADD and scattered. I feel like every track offers something different, which is a kind of cool thing in itself, but I think for me it ultimately feels like a collection of songs rather than an album, whereas the previous three were very solidly RECORDS to me, even if X&Y could have benefitted from being shorter and less samey.
  11. Somehow I missed that this even existed? :uhoh: It's too bad they didn't play it at Rock am Ring today so we could really hear it without the distorted bass. It sounds like it has promise, but it sounds more hip-hoppy than anything I've ever heard from them. Not in a bad way, either :D
  12. This is probably my second-favorite of the new ones. Wow. I hope we get a bit of a better idea of the lyrics with subsequent performances, but it's great. I hate the name, however, haha. I dislike it as much as the title of ETIAW.
  13. This is my absolute favorite of all the new ones, and perhaps I like it more than a lot of Viva stuff. Man, this is an awesome song. I thought the same! I don't think it's really the same song evolved, just because they did that one live and effectively released it, but I think they're similar in pretty cool ways. I love both.
  14. A lot of my major worries about LP5 have been erased by that gig. Like I say, sure I'd love more simple, less "wall of sound" stuff, and less flashy stagesets, but DANG I JUST REALLY LIKE EVERYTHING I'VE HEARD SO FAR. I'm just going purely on music as much as I can for this era and screwing the rest, because in the end, that's what it should be about to me. I have to try to separate history and promo and genre and sentimentality, and I think it's working for me so far. I'm definitely put back in "major Coldplay fan" mode after watching Rock am Ring, and I can't wait to see and hear these songs myself at Oxegen.
  15. Everyone seems to really like "Charlie Brown." I was completely blown away by it. I can see it becoming a standout favorite once we get a studio recording of it. This sums up what I thought about the whole thing: :bigcry: :wacky: :bomb:  I really love the sound of all the new songs. I think that's an understatement, actually. A lot of my LP5 worries have gone away completely. Yes, I still worry about them and their trajectory, but if I like the sound of the music, I like the sound of the music. I AM ABOUT 600 TIMES MORE EXCITED TO SEE THEM AT OXEGEN NOW.
  16. Same. As happy as I am to be hearing these new things...my personal preference would have been to not hear them for the first time live. Even as more professional recordings from streams like we'll get tomorrow...I just have a very strong preference for studio recordings, especially for the first time I'm hearing things.
  17. "Hurts Like Heaven" is the one with the walking man! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoQXTnZni8E]YouTube - ‪Hurts Like Heaven - Coldplay live at Rock im Park in Nuremberg 2011‬‏[/ame] (holy hell, another terrible name...but I'm liking what I can hear of this! Waiting for the blowback from this one for being too poppy too, though)
  18. OOOH I REALLY LIKE THE SOUND OF THAT ONE TOO! But I foresee a lot of the same "it's too poppy" etc complaints...
  19. Aww, you all are lovely   (HI DARCY, I HAVEN'T TALKED TO YOU IN FOREVER  except you're banned, WTF?) But yeah, I listened to the song a bit more while driving tonight...and I massively enjoyed myself. The fact that I feel like I need to defend my like for it a bit is a problem in itself, and something I'll probably deal with at a later date after we have a more firm idea about LP5, but...yeah. I'm liking it more and more (even though I liked it from the start), whereas a lot of people seem to be going in the opposite direction. Does this mean I can stop being CPing's resident Negative Nancy? :cheesy:
  20. I can't hear enough of that 55-second clip to judge anything :uhoh:. I was really hoping there'd be a mole miked to the gills or something so we'd have more to go on than we did this morning about how the future looks. They played SEVEN NEW SONGS (was it seven? I was out and that's what I was told). That's most of an album! I just wish more evidence was online, but we have tomorrow's livestream I guess. Also...I listened to ETIAW in the car tonight while I was driving...and I enjoyed myself massively...I almost feel like I need to defend liking it so much, which is a problem in itself, but I just feel like dancing and celebrating something while listening to it. Too bad I think Chris got Apple and Moses to write the lyrics.
  21. Also, one more quick opinion on the nature of music re: a post I saw buried in here somewhere: If I never let any music grow on me, including Coldplay songs, and took everything I heard based on my first opinion of it, I'd listen to about three artists, and maybe four albums total. Maybe that's just my particular method, but I don't liken "a grower" to something I've forced myself to like at all. There is ONE BAND in the world that I've liked on first listen/heard one song from for the first time ever and decided to investigate more instantaneously, and that's Phoenix. Every other band I've had to cycle around to at least twice to get into. Same thing with individual songs and albums from those bands. I don't think re-trying things I haven't been so hot on at first as being a bad thing at all.
  22. My official vote would be 6.5, I guess, but I went with 6 :P
  23. I don't think I've posted in this thread today. It's a bit too much for me on both ends of the spectrum. But I will say that even though I was one of the "Debbie Downers" that had my reservations about this, I took it simply on face-value at first listen...and I quite like it. I still like it a lot of listens later. It has absolutely nothing to do with the reasons I like Coldplay and the lyrics are utter poo, but if it's a song I heard somewhere from some artist I'd never heard of, I'd say "hey, this is super-poppy and fluffy, but I actually like this." It might fall under the category of "guilty-pleasure song," but I'd personally like it anyway. Ergo, there are my reasons for liking it. I'm over trying to liken this band Coldplay has become to the band they once were, personally. I like both for different reasons. I like the old Coldplay for more important reasons, I think, but when I get worried or in doubt, I really just try to take it back to sound alone, separated entirely from band name or genre or history. I'm trying not to consider how I feel about a Coldplay song being liked as a "guilty-pleasure song," but that tact's working for me. I also said this in another thread: It's poppy and fluffy, sure, and while I'm not really a grand fan of their movement in that direction since [insert date here, it's debatable], and they don't make it easy to be a fan of theirs (especially when you like other ~legitimate~ music), but I've learned not to really expect anything else, and I think I've become more accepting of different styles of music BECAUSE of Coldplay and this board, which includes finding value in a lot of things I would have dismissed as too commercial and crowd-pleasing before. Now, as for all the discussions and spats about all this, I just implore people to consider the following: 1. An opinion is not a fact, so don't act like it is, please 2. Everyone is entitled to their opinion 3. One song is indicative of nothing in a larger sense 4. If you're really distressed about how this is making you feel about the band or their trajectory or whatever, I just recommend trying to strip away everything but the pure sound and whether or not you have any mote of enjoyment listening to it, regardless of artist or dashed hopes. If you still hate it, completely valid. But I say it's worth a shot.
  24. I agree. I had high hopes for something a bit more stripped-down and back to basics, but the second I saw the 2 promo photos and the artwork for this song, I knew that probably wasn't going to happen. I'm still liking the song quite a bit for what it is, but my absolute dream would have been to see a more simple, less flashy bit of artwork and a simple photo of them in normal clothes...and a song that sounded like it was four guys in a room trying to churn out some beautiful sounds from the heart, not for the market.
  25. That's actually a good point--It reminds me of "Just Say Yes" a lot, which I also really like. I agree, that song is probably "better" for reasons I can't really articulate, but I feel like something that's been nagging me all morning has been answered :D I agree with almost everything but the preferring the Viva era and the preferring live versions. I guess I'm just trying to take everything they do from now on at face value--if I enjoy it when I hear it, then so be it, and I'm going to try not to relate it back in a mournful way to all their older stuff that I first fell in love with. I still have my qualms with their promo/PR/management etc, but I think that's for a number of reasons, least of which because that's what I hope to work up to career-wise and I kind of nitpick that stuff from an outsider's point of view. I just...really like the song for what it is. When I compare it back to my favorite Coldplay songs, sure it pales in comparison, ESPECIALLY lyrically. But I think this song serves a purpose. I'd like their overall purpose to be a little more than "hey, it's fun and will sell" and I'd like them to infuse more depth into the rest of the album (if this is to even be on the album at all), but I'm looking forward to hearing this one live and enjoying it for its fluffiness.
