New Coldplay eh?
I'm going to feel like a bit of a **** singing these words for the rest of my life, though . Watch my face be big and huge on the jumbotron at Oxegen or something and it be recorded for a DVD :dozey:. I've already been on TV singing along to Christmas Lights like a prat of late...too bad they rarely do songs like "See You Soon" or "Amsterdam" anymore with much more lyrical depth :P

New Coldplay eh?
The song isn't what I hoped for for a second, and has no bearing on the reasons I originally fell in love with Coldplay. But for what it is, sampling and shitty lyrics and horrible title and all, I REALLY LIKE IT. I just wish Chris put more effort into the lyrics. I'd have very little to say bad about it if he'd written better words, besides "wow, I'll always miss 2000-2003 Coldplay, but I don't mind the new Coldplay either." It's poppy and fluffy, sure, and while I'm not really a grand fan of their movement in that direction since [insert date here, it's debatable], and they don't make it easy to be a fan of theirs (especially when you like other ~legitimate~ music), but I've learned not to really expect anything else, and I think I've become more accepting of different styles of music BECAUSE of Coldplay and this board, which includes finding value in a lot of things I would have dismissed as too commercial and crowd-pleasing before.

ApproximatelyInfinite replied to Jenjie's topic in Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall (Single, EP & video)See, this is what I meant--everyone was getting all over my butt for being a Negative Nancy, but I said I'd probably end up having the music redeem it, and I was right. I REALLY like it for what it is. I think the title and the lyrics are terrible, and I think they could have found something else besides "WA WA WA WA WATERFALL" to fill that bit in with, but I just think it's great. Not vintage Coldplay, not why I fell in love with them or continue to go crazy about them, but I don't think they'll ever go back to that. I just find that even if I feel like they're a completely different band, I still really like what they put out, just in different ways. They don't make it easy to be a fan and tell people you love them, though . UGH, I  IT. -

ApproximatelyInfinite replied to Jenjie's topic in Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall (Single, EP & video)I figure about ten different people will be recording this, so I'm thinking I won't bother...but then again if the board crashes and it takes ages to go on iTunes like Christmas Lights... Maybe I'll set up my stuff :P -

ApproximatelyInfinite replied to Jenjie's topic in Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall (Single, EP & video)Oh, they'll be getting a major fine, that we know. I bet the band doesn't give a damn, but EMI will have their butts for any amount of money they can get :P OOF, I refreshed this page like once so far and it already has two new pages. I forgot how this place moves. Watch me give up posting after awhile--soon . But: SO EXCITED, with a bit of nervousness :bomb: [/obligatory post] -

New Coldplay eh?
I actually really like "A Spell A Rebel Yell." It wasn't one of my favorites at all when I first heard it, but I really like the vibe now. Certainly not a lyrical gem either, though :P. I also like "Yes" and "Cemeteries of London," though neither are my favorites on VLV. I love the HELL out of "Chinese Sleep Chant," though. Am I the only one completely confused by all of the comparisons to Arcade Fire's The Suburbs? :uhoh:

ApproximatelyInfinite replied to DukeNewcomb's topic in Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall (Single, EP & video)Wow, the name Monday Morning for the album really appeals to me, for some reason. I don't have a lot of faith in that rumor being true, but I just really like the sound of that. One of Death Cab for Cutie's new songs is called that as well, and it's my favorite on the new album. I also really like the sound of "less fanfare." If he means that, I'm interested to see what their interpretation of that is, because to me, nine teasers of a song for a straight week and outfits that smack of new costumes and potentially quite complex stage sets is MORE fanfare :P. -

ApproximatelyInfinite replied to DukeNewcomb's topic in Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall (Single, EP & video)I don't necessarily think that that means that they pulled the album straight out of the rubbish...I think it means they probably revisited and reshaped old ideas that they previously canned when the ideas that they first replaced them with didn't pan out. Despite me coming off as a Negative Nancy in this thread, I really do have quite a bit of faith in them musically. And re: Pete's long post that I won't quote as not to take up more page space: I agree with almost everything you've said :nice:. I had a lot of the same experiences relating to VLV, with it/the whole era needing to grow on me, and in my heart of hearts, as different as LP5 could be, I think the odds are slim that I'll really dislike it. I'm just always going to be one of those fans that wishes they would do certain things that they're probably not going to go back to doing, but that doesn't mean I dislike the new stuff at all, either, and I think odds are good that I'll like LP5 too. I just consider their career in two kind of distinct halves, and I guess I know which one I like best. -
New Coldplay eh?
I think I'm coming off as more negative than I actually am. I have my reservations, but I also have a decent amount of faith in them. Really, I'm most disappointed in the lyrics. After that, their marketing choices (and clothes, but that's more personal preference), but I think that's mostly because I want a career in band management/assistance/PR, so I'm really nitpicky about those sorts of things. I really felt very much the same way before VLV, and I wasn't keen on "Violet Hill" when it first came out, but I was quite pleasantly surprised by the album. I think it's likely the same will happen here. The difference that's concerning me is that even though the VLV lyrics weren't stellar overall, they weren't THIS disappointing, either, but hey, maybe it's just a dud song lyrics-wise and the rest are mediocre like usual. EDIT: mediocre in terms of lyrics, I mean. I think their music is still very quality, or has been. I hope LP5 maintains that. As much as I like the first two albums, I understand change is inevitable, so I can't do much else besides welcome it.

ApproximatelyInfinite replied to DukeNewcomb's topic in Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall (Single, EP & video)As much as they're pushing this graffiti motif, I highly doubt they're going to be singing ABOUT graffiti and spray paint. It's the same thing with VLV: they told us to expect a Latin flavor sort of thing (or the media did), and really it was present only in the undertones. Like I say, I'm all for everyone doing what they want and what they think is best. It just doesn't gel well with my ideas about what I'd like the band to be focusing on. I think they'd benefit from everything being a bit more stripped down. The Crisis gigs were like that, and I thought that might have been the best I've ever seen them perform, and the most refreshing show from them I've ever seen. -
New Coldplay eh?
This is the exact thing I'm worried about. As much as I want new music that I really enjoy, I also don't want it to be bad for sentimental reasons. It may be fangirly to say, but I don't want to lose my passion for them. I don't really mind loving them in new ways like I did with VLV, but I don't know how I'll handle real lack of musical quality.

For all the reservations I have about the upcoming album, that trailer just made me feel all wiggly :wacky:. I really can't wait for this . It'll be a great preview for Oxegen!

ApproximatelyInfinite replied to DukeNewcomb's topic in Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall (Single, EP & video)I agree, they're completely within their rights to wear/do whatever. I guess the reason I'm just not so hot on their coordinated clothing (even with the all-black with X&Y) is that it smacks of this heavily-orchestrated campaign to me. We know they dress pretty normally in their free time, even when they're out at public events yet not with the other band members, and I don't know, the idea of them wearing carefully pre-planned and coordinated clothes to me helps move them towards the superficial pop side of the music spectrum. They're perfectly within their rights to be there too, but as someone who doesn't usually go for that type of music and marketing, it's a shame to me personally, especially when I think they have more to give and more to go on than gimmicky things like that. -
New Coldplay eh?
I really like Christmas Lights too. Of course I associate all the memories of the day with it too, but to be honest, the first time we heard it on the boat and stuff, I wasn't that wowed by it as a song. It started to grow on me later after the 400+ times I heard it at the shoot . Now I think it's safe to say I still really love it as a song, separate from all the personal memories I associate with it . I HOPE they do. Something tells me they won't go independent or anything, even though I think they SHOULD, but I'd love to see them get away from a big label. My hope would be that once they're on their own, they would be without so many people pressuring them to do really commercial things at an ailing label that needs to make massive amounts of money. I don't completely blame EMI or their PR for their choices, though. Obviously the guys are going along with it and coming up with ideas of their own. I'm just tired of the gimmicks and flashiness, wherever they come from.

New Coldplay eh?
Something that keeps me positive: I've really loved the two songs they've done since VLV, "Don Quixote/Spanish Rain" and "Christmas Lights," and Prospekt's March contains most of my favorite songs from the VLV era. I think "Christmas Lights" in particular had some really lame lines in it, but I still think it's a decent song as it stands. Like I say, I think I have a decent amount of faith in them musically, even though I do think in the past few years they've been going too "grand" with things and would probably benefit from stripping back, but I think it's a shame their lyrics are going down the toilet, and I'd like to see them taking a different tact with marketing and publicity and who they're aiming to please with their work.

ApproximatelyInfinite replied to DukeNewcomb's topic in Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall (Single, EP & video)Exactly. This is the first time in my memory the drama has really started BEFORE the actual release, at least this badly. The real poo-storm will come on Friday at about 12:01 PM BST. It's probably asking far too much to have everyone learn how to accept others' opinions and be respectful before then, isn't it? (Pris, you have the best sig EVER ) -

My starter band was The Strokes, haha! And look who I'm most obsessed with now again, exactly ten years later.... I also liked early Green Day around that time, though, which I guess is slightly more embarrassing...but I maintain their earliest stuff has some value. After that, I went into a hardcore Beatles phase, and after that, Coldplay. I will say that Coldplay, mainly this board, introduced me to a much wider spectrum of music that set me on a course of getting serious about wanting to work in the industry. And as much as maybe I haven't been AS enthusiastic about Coldplay post-AROBTTH, I still really have loved their last two albums, just in different ways.

UGH, I'm so glad this thread exists. This is a perfect example of how Coldplay fans can be skeptical and worried while still being fair. I hate how any expression of "hmm, this seems a bit sub-par" is met with "OMGZ YOU'RE A BAD FAN AND ARE OFFENDING THE BAND" in the Coldplay section. Has Coldplaying always been this immature and dramatic, or am I just too old to put up with it as much now? Everyone remembers that I make super-long posts, right? :P So here I go.

Awesome! I heard about this when the news first broke, but I hadn't ventured into this thread to see that there was a place to find the closest theater to you until just now! I haven't bought them yet, but I'm DEFINITELY going to the New Rochelle, NY IMAX

New Fashion
Unless it's just a bad angle x2, I'm NOT a fan of Chris's hair  And I like that the jackets are kind of more dressed-down, and that Will's looks like a normal leather jacket especially, but I was personally hoping they wouldn't do coordinated clothes/costumes this time around. I kind of hope they don't beat these into the ground and wear the same thing at every gig and public appearance for two years straight.
