Important Details about Indie Rock
Indie Rock, as defined by Beetlebrox, Zapphod, is: a mixture of blue, electric indigo*, electric violet, and Hooloovoo, a super-intelligent shade of the colour blue (see The More Than Complete Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) *electric indigo is the result of squeezing famous Phonecian Snails with 20,000 electron volts, preferably on the obverse side of a cathode ray tube. Come out of things unsaid,
At the time of Clocks, I was nervous about the future. Questions raced through my mind - Would modern humanity learn to appreciate the simple pleasures and amazing life on our planet, or would we destroy it all for our own excess hubris? Would we learn to marry the natural world to the human-centered? Will we ever truly see the links? Is our global economy predicated on an unsustainable model, like a runaway freight train, or can it be reshaped to last and be balanced? Can we keep ourselves in tune with nature, or will it all be tuned out, save for a few remnant reminders. On the human front, would we move forward, and embrace compassion for one-another, or slide into selfish modes? All this had me charged at the time; & it still does! I think we're accelerating on both fronts; more compassion, and yet more destruction. I remain uncertain about the future, but realize more than ever that we can make a difference. What deep concerns do you have?

A Rush Of Blood To The Head.
Well, I suppose maybe he just saw the cover? Man, that cover art threw me for a loop the first time I saw it as well! Some of the songs are a bit sad, but then for the most part, the majority of them are uplifting - it's like life! Some downs, but mostly ups!! Though they all have great emotional depth. Anyhow, try and get your dad to watch the Youtube video clip shot live of the band playing Clocks in Vancouver, 2006 - best I've seen yet!:) (looks like 100,000+ audience as well!!)

Creative Babbling on Pianos...
Thanks! I thought about that, but the SUV driver on the cell phone(s) might only notice a slight dent in their right front fender. So, I took a walk in the meadow instead!!:lock: :cheesy::happy:It was a calm but dramatic day here (clear in the East, sunlit pines & dark clouds looking North, and a couple of wild turkeys marching across the field..). How's the day shaping up over there??

Creative Babbling on Pianos...
I love the piano! Thinking on - musing on the piano... It's really a large harp with soft drumsticks / hammers. Instead of finger plucking, it softly mallets out the notes! Just incredible linkages for each key - precisely made to make the hammers strike correctly, and do so reliably for a very long time! So, in some ways, technology has been changing our music for a long, long time - electronic keyboards fit the dynamics of that extension just as well! Actually, it's more like adding a new instument to the family, where the inventors simply wanted an easier to play and more precise harp!! Pressing the right pedal to release the dampers turns the piano back into a harp - with all the string harmonics possible, and blending of notes so sweet to the ear. It's the god pedal, that gently releases the birds into song during the pre-dawn hours... So Wakeman had renissance influences & I can sense that rebirth of creativity and joy with each new discovery! Forget for a moment about structure & the names of notes. Forget the box we're in. :square: Music is pure emotion taking form, in sinc with our core being. We shape musical instruments not based on exact science, but on what our ears and minds discern as pleasant and unique, colored beautifully by the context of our cultures! Just thinking about the dynamics of sound - all the intricate beating of notes, the complex harmonics and interplay of various instruments - quite amazing! We never tire of good music because it contains a tremendous variety of components - something new to focus on or to catch our attention, around every turn in the road. - to see the intricate beauty hidden in the vast meadow, or to see and smell and listen to the wind and the lapping of waves on a shore. And sense the world in it's fullest form, and delight in the moment of discovery... I think I need to get outdoors!!:):shy::daisy: Happy Trails to All !!! -Chuck

I can Play CLocks
Getting back to Spies88's rendition, I think there is no wrong way to play Clocks! Go for it, Spies!!:hat: It's full of harmonic overtones, and sounds good the way U played it!! And besides, subtle variations make the music sping to life again! In the Coldplay-Anaheim concert version, Clocks was magnificent from what little bit I saw & heard of it, but it was jazzed-up a lot! And belive me, I know the nerve it takes to attempt to play music with an audience for the first time, and you did great!! Just keep listening and comparing to what you want to play - and, it is true that sheet music is over-simplified. Playing it by ear is better than by the sheets. Clocks was an experiment in the first place - variations on a them, and I think the secret to the sound is the pauses and soft or missing beats. You did a lot better than any of the others I've listened to on that note! It helps to have a nice keyboard with all the works, but a piano or basic keyboard works just as well, sans some of the fancier sounds. Xylophone too. Play to enjoy it, and to heck with all the nay-sayers I say!! Keep Up the Great Work Spies!!!:) -Chuck

Elton John Sheets?
Sheet vs. Reality Hey,:) Elton's Cool!!! I tried a couple of pieces arranged for piano a few years ago, and they weren't quite like the original!! If you haven't had experience with this, what worked for me was to just listen to the music, and then play the part by ear, using the sheet as a guide for the right key signature and chords.. It's not as fast, but wayy better sounding! One way to get the subtle nuances correct, I think. Good luck and have fun!!! Happy Trails, -chuck

Hawking: Humans must colonise other planets
Humans must 1st make Earth stable!! Well, maybe Hawkings is correct in the general sense, but what's the hurry? My strain of thought is that sooner than an asteroid collision, we are altering the life-support systems on our own planet in many not-so wise ways, and haven't yet fully respected each-other's rights, nor designed our civilizations to last for the long haul. Make Trade Fair is an excellent start-point, and I'm very glad for all their efforts in correcting at least some of the imbalances, and setting an example of how to achieve global equity. I'm currently busy with local politics, working to correct the political unfairness that has for too long run amok here in the US - it all starts at Square One!! Sometimes, we get ahead of ourselves, but dreams are the stuff the future is made of!! It is heartening to hear it coming from Steven Hawkings - if he thinks it's possible, it's probably do-able in the future! Happy Trails to You.. -Chuck

What are you thinking right now?
When I first saw this question, I thought one thing. Then I read a few of the posts, and though another thing! I'm shocked!! Now not wanting to go to class, well, there's just no excuse for that...:stunned: Take it on as a quest, as a crusade, as a... a ....grade to be gotten!! We have to see the darkness to appreciate the light! (and visa-versa..) HAPPY TRAILS !!! -Chuck

What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?
Right now I hear the buzz of computer fans and drives - it sounds like when you're diving in a lake, and you hear the buzz of motorboats and fish talking to one another.. Also, a heating system fan - the rush of the fluid air pulsing and gushing through the plenum. and the muted crackle of burning oak chunks in a stove, as well as the tick-tick-tick sounds this stove makes as the metal expands from a freshly lit fire. The duct work wiggles slightly from warm air flowing through it, and produces note like a violin's, only pianissimo & staccato, with some randomness to it. Hey, you wanted to know what I'm listening to right now, right?!:square::daisy::lock:- chuck says hi!
