  1. In regards to the Parachutes tracks I think the band doesn't play these much anymore because: A. Most of the songson that album are too "quiet" to really work that well in the bigger venues they play now. (when they toured smaller venues in South America in '07 they did work more Parachutes songs into the set.) and B. They seem to feel that they've grown beyond that music. Many musicians have periods of they're work they feel similar about. U2 for example, went almost the entire 90's without playing hardly any of their early work, despite strong fan demand for same...
  2. I think it has to do mostly with the type of audience they have. Coldplay, being one of the most commercially big acts in he world, attract great numbers of casual fans who go to their shows expecting to hear the radio hits and are not really all that interested in B-sides, deep cuts, covers etc. If you look closely at bands who are known for changing the setlist a great deal, most of them are either: A. Acts who achieve most of their success outside the "mainstream channels" the music industry (Radiohead, Pearl Jam) B. Veteran acts whose audience is so solidified they can play whatever they want (The Stones, etc.) C. Jam bands whose whole appeal is based around that type of show. (DMB etc.) At the same time acts more firmly grounded in "pop music" sensibilities (and for better or worse, Coldplay is firmly in this group), do tend to play the same type of repetative shows Coldplay does.
  3. All four of the acoustics he's using live now are Gibson Blues Kings which are not exactly what I would call a "lower quality guitar"...
  4. If I may correct my earlier comments: It seems I got Things I Don't Understand confused with The World Turned Upside Down (the latter being the song I meant to list...)
  5. The Original arrangement(sp?) of GPASUYF. (especially the part abot 2/3 of the way in where it breaks down into just the bass drum before kicking up again to coincide with the guitar solo.) Sparks-Really cool, subtle jazz style drumming with brushes and such. Things I Don't Understand-Cool "post punk" vibe carried largely through bass/drum combo here. my favorite work from Guy and Will here...
  6. Back n the 60's Fender did have a finish available on some models called "burgundy mist" that was similar to the Finish on Jon's guitar (in fact, that's what I thought it was at first.) looking closer though, the finish isn't purple enough...
  7. "Hey fakfak what telecaster should i get?" IMHO, I'd say the best all around Tele in terms of the value/quality ratio is the American Standard Tele. They're built fairly slid, sound good and provide good value for a relatively low cost (no idea what they cost outside the U.S. though...) Some of the Japanese reissues are pretty good too, and you can pick those up pretty cheap. (Noel Gallagher of oasis plays a Japanese Tele as one of his main stage guitars, so that goes to show they are of enough quality to be used as a professional touring Instrument.)
  8. I know I do this a lot, but I'm looking for another photo and since I've had good results asking here, I decided it couldn't hurt... Looking through th multi-media of live photos, I've found several pictures of the bands' gear (guitars in racks etc.) I've seen them for Chris' acoustics, Chris' electrics' Guy's basses, and the rack with the gear they take up into the audience for the acoustic set. So...has anyone seen a comprable photo depicting Jon's guitars? I'm building a website and I'd really like to have a photo of what he's using pictured all together like I havwe for the other members' gear.
  9. That's what I'm thinking as weel as it has a mirrored pickguard which is decidedly not stock...
  10. Does anyone know if the pink colored Jazzmaster Jonny is using now (and the like colored Jaguar used in the LiJ video) are stock colors? I really like the color, but can't seem to find any info on that color as a stock finish...
  11. Based on what I know of his parachutes rig (which isn't much), I can only guess it's probably either an expression pedal of some kind (thouh nothing he was using them would seem to need one), or an amp switching pedal.
  12. "Haha, from what i hear about your knowledge of guitar and what gear you have, I'm not sure that last sentence is correct "Simple general sucking at playing guitar" Thanks. However keep in mind that knowledge in no way implies skill...:laugh3:
  13. I think that's pretty close to correct. It still sounds a bit off when I play it, but I'm sure that's due to other factors (lack of proper f/x, looped bits, and simple general sucking at playing the guitar.):laugh3: Thanks for posting it.:D
  14. "There needs to a greater range in Coldplay's ticket prices. I don't even have a problem with the top tickets being ridiculously expensive, however, it bothers me when 90% of the tickets are above $90." Perhaps it has to do with different venue configurations, but when the band played the United center in Chicago this year, the percentage of "cheap" tickets was higher than it seems to be for some of the other shows (though the united center does have more total seats than most arenas, and I'm only counting face value of tickets as opposed to what you actually pay after outside fees etc.) That said, I do agree that having a broader range of ticket prices is someting needed by most big live acts today (including Coldplay), whereby the "cheap" seats are actually somewhat cheap...
  15. "Are you and your friends still putting up that site regarding all of Jonny's Gear/FX/Guitar etc" Kind of. It's still something I'mtrying to get together, but my friends both kind of bailed on the project which slowed progress to a crawl. I do intend to do it, but not in the near future as it stands now...
  16. Has anyone worked out Jon's part for Yes on guitar? (I've found tons of tabs for acoustic that are clearly not the part for electric guitar.) In particular, is the tuning funky somehow. I've fiddled around with several tunings but can't get it sounding close to correct.
  17. "I love the fact that they're not on the top of the list.... a lot of artists tend to ask for ridiculously expensive concert tickets when they get big.. but not Coldplay" I think the key issue in the ticket price debate is to look at things on a relative basis. Coldplay's tickets are undeniably(sp?) quite expensive. However, compared to what many (perhaps) most big acts of their popularity charge, they would have to be considered toward the low end of the fee scale. Really, I'm quite hard pressed to think of another "arena act" I've seen in the last several years whose top priced ticket came in at under $100 U.S. Still a lot of money, but not nearly as much as others (look at ehe averages in the arcticle for example) So... I guess what I'm trying to say is trhat Coldplay tickets are very expensive, as opposed to ridiculously expensive which to my mind are the ever increasing number of tours whose lowest price tickets are over $100 U.S. Hopefully Coldplay will never enter that group...
  18. "I've seen alot photo's and videos and stuff from the parachutes where Jonny and Guy used Marshall amps, well the Marshall could have been Chris his amp, but it was right behind Jonny." Not saying he didn't, just that he wasn't when I saw them years ago. That's interesting though as I'm hard pressed to think any of their Parachutes songs would require something more robust than the Fender Twins he was using back then as his main amps. Also, I could be wrong on this, but I don't think Chris played anything but acoustic guitar back then, only taking up electric with AROBTTH songs.
  19. "I know he used Marshall in the Parachutes tour, I don't know if he did use the same Marshall." He didn't use one when I saw them back in 2001. (which I think would be the Parachutes tour? Could be wrong on that though...) I do know however that he sometimes uses a JCM50 to record with in the studio.
  20. I finally got to see Coldplay's performance on the X-Mas TOTP special and I noticed Jonny had a Marshall half stack next to his Fender Devilles. Has he used a marshall as part of his live setup all of the current tour? Also, does anyone have info on the specific model he's running?
  21. "you could get it later if you still like it, i mean even if you won't use it for your band, but if you liked the sound" I probably will get one at some point, as I've now had the opportunity to play several and am quite fond of their unique sound, but at this point I'm happy with the 4 guitars I have (plus my girlfriend probably wouldn't tolerate my expanding the collection any further at the moment:laugh3:)
  22. "you can't try how it sounds on the shop where you'll buy it?." I did try it, and I really liked the sound, I just got the sense that despite liking the tone of the guitar by itself, I'd come to regret the choice when using it with my band given the style of music that we play. Ultimately(sp?), I decided not to get it and bought a Les Paul instead (and I'm very happy with the LP...:D)
  23. I'm sure overall Jon has TONS of guitars, including many he's never used live. In addition he no longer uses several of the guitars mentioned in that interview (which is from 2003 BTW).
  24. "But what about if Jonny breaks a string? His Roadie won't have enough time to restring the guitar in the middle of a song. Thus, extra tele guitars are needed." From what I've read and the live performances I've seen, I think he usually uses for Teles set up like this: 1. Black-His main live guitar-standard tuning 2. Sunburst- used for Capo'd songs, used to be his main live guitar in the AROBTTH era. 3. Walnut- set up for slide, usually in standard tuning and seems to also serve as backup for the black tele. 4. Natural-tuned to drop D, used for 42. To me, this seems an adequate(sp?) set up to cover both altered tunings and backups. (especially since he has at least 2 other guitars he uses live)...
