  1. Yes Echo And The Bunnymen
  2. Mine is done now. It will require some sort of active participation from the listener.
  3. Jay Jay Pistolet was awesome!
  4. Yeah, his lawyer called him and said the court order won't be permanent (at first, they thought it would be, but apparently there was a fuck-up by the police). So he should be able to return someday. He doesn't have a clue yet when that will be though.
  5. Here's a track from the gig: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVurq8s2d-k]‪Robin Proper-Sheppard (Sophia) - Holidays Are Nice @ L'archiduc 02-08-2011‬‏ - YouTube[/ame]
  6. Brussels in 2002. Definitely not the best gig out of the bunch I saw, but good enough to get me hooked. Still remember it like it was yesterday though. I was in front row and there was an annoying television camera in front of my face during the first couple of songs.
  7. Beer also gives somewhat less pleasant hangovers than other alcoholic drinks.

Anyone here know Sophia? It's the band of Robin Proper-Sheppard. He used to play industrial noise in The God Machine, but started to play more quiet (yet very dark and personal) music after the bassist in The God Machine suddenly died from a brain tumor. I don't think he's that well known in the US or the UK, but he had quite some success in the rest of Europe (mostly Belgium, Holland, Germany and Italy I would say). He also had one alternative radio hit (well, at least in Belgium) with Oh My Love. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YR0SEIhWJqo]‪Sophia - Oh My Love lyrics video‬‏ - YouTube[/ame] Anyway, I saw him live on Monday and it was the best, most emotional, heartbreaking gig I have ever been to. Robin sent me an e-mail on Sunday inviting me to the last-minute gig he had planned in L'Archiduc in Brussels. L'Archiduc is his (and mine!) favourite bar in Brussels. Robin, who is an American, actually lived in Brussels for a couple of years and performed there quite a lot. In the e-mail he said it was a last-minute goodbye gig and that he didn't know how long he'd be gone. He didn't give a lot of other details but said that it was important that the people who have followed him since the beginning were there. When I got there yesterday, he told us that he had been arrested last week and that he had to leave Europe by Tuesday at midnight (which was yesterday). Apparently, he had never bothered to get a proper (working) visa which kind of meant he had been living in Europe 'illegally' for the last 15 years. Which is crazy for someone who did tours all over Europe, released lots of albums and played the biggest festivals. :-) On Sunday, his lawyer said the US would probably never let him leave the country again. He was completely devastated by this, but wanted to give his friends and biggest fans in Europe a final goodbye. Needless to say, the gig was very emotional. At some point, Robin and the entire audience (which was quite small, the bar has a capacity of about 70 people) were in tears. Robin has a daughter who lives with her mother in the UK. Visiting her obviously won't be possible as long as he has to stay in the US. So when he started to sing Directionless, an old song, things got so emotional, he had to stop several times to finish the song. The song has the following lyrics: I say goodbye to my friends some I've known for years this is the first time I've felt the fear I kiss my baby she's just one month old I kiss her mother nothing I say can console I guess I'm losing my direction I'm losing my direction step on a train wave underwater I don't know if I'll be back again I try to say 'it'll be ok' it' s not the first time I've run away I still tear up just thinking about it. Obviously, the entire gig was very special (with a mixture of sadness, but also lots of joy looking back at all those years and gigs that have passed), but that song just broke everyone's heart. The good news is that he got a phone call from his lawyer after the gig who said that he will definitely be able to travel back to Europe in the future. It may take him a while until all is settled, but the court order can never be permanent. So he will be back in Europe someday. So, anyone familiar with his music? I think the album People Are Like Seasons is his most successful.
  9. Seen them live a couple of times. They've always showed very little interest on stage, but at least in the beginning there was a lot of energy and passion in their gigs. The (festival) gigs I've seen after Because Of The Times were all quite boring and bland. And I also hate that ridiculous banter about drinking and being drunk by Caleb Followill. Each time I've seen them, he was obviously sober, so why ramble on about having drinks and stuff? Especially if that's about the only thing you say to the audience the entire gig.
  10. Yes, I just don't like the taste anymore. Don't know why.
  11. I stopped drinking beer.
L'Archiduc is trouwens mijn favoriete bar! Na een concert in de AB zeker eens binnenspringen! Elke band met naam die in Brussel moet spelen gaat er zeker iets drinken. Zelfs Liam, Noel, Bono, The Edge en zo kom je er sowieso tegen na een concert. Dat even terzijde. Vooral de tekst in het nummer Directionless (over z'n dochter) moet enorm pijnlijk geweest zijn op dat moment: I say goodbye to my friends some I've known for years this is the first time I've felt the fear I kiss my baby she's just one month old I kiss her mother nothing I say can console I guess I'm losing my direction I'm losing my direction step on a train wave underwater I don't know if I'll be back again I try to say 'it'll be ok' it' s not the first time I've run away Ik denk niet dat er op dat moment iemand was die het droog hield...
Foook zeg.
  14. Whoever has to make one for me can do whatever he/she wants.
  15. It was in 2002 or 2003. Can't remember exactly.
  16. I speak French and did not understand a word of this.
  17. I can't remember. I know it was after a Strokes gig that Chris attended.
  18. I wasn't really a fan and wasn't too impressed when I saw them live last year, but after hearing this song, I'm so looking forward to that album! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVbUpl7wows]‪Bombay Bicycle Club - Lights out, Words gone - GLASTONBURY 2011‬‏ - YouTube[/ame]
  19. I agree with this as well. Chris Martin too by the way! I remember this really old (right before the release of AROBTTH I think) interview with Chris where he even said so (the lack of long solos, the focus on simple melodies, etc.).
  20. OK, I don't pretend to be an expert on this, but here are my responses. The US? Short answer: If done badly, they destroy capital. Which is all too often the case, as we are seeing right now. You're probably right about this one. But the key here is what you call a random small-scale conflict. If your society exists of nothing but random small-scale conflicts, you have a huge problem as well. What is there to disagree here? I said nothing positive about the Somali government? And I said absolutely nothing about the role of the UN. I have no idea what you're talking about here, but that's probably my fault.:)
  21. See, this is something I can agree with. However, engineers don't come falling from the sky. You need to accumulate capital first in order to train (and efficiently use) engineers. And you can only accumulate capital in a stable and safe environment. Which is something they don't have right now.
  22. I think I know which study you are referring to, but this should be taken with a huge grain of salt. There are multiple reasons why certain parts of Somalia have seen an improvement in their standard of living (e.g. the return of money earned by people who fled the country), but there is no way that you can prove that the absence of a government is one of them. Besides, the difference between a bad/corrupt government (which they had in the past) and no government at all is very small in the case of Somalia. Even when there was still a government, Xeer law had a way bigger influence on the region than the actual government. So for (parts of) Southern Somalia, the lack of government was just a continuation of what they had in the past. So be careful when you call the political circumstances in which they are living a blessing and say that their Xeer law system is working 'just fine for them'. Using Somalia as an example is definitely not a good way to justify why an economic system with absolutely no government involvement is a good idea. And for the record, I think some of the economic points you're making on this forum are valid. It's just that you sometimes seem to lose yourself in the same kind of propaganda you're fighting against.
  23. The dignity with which the people of Norway are carrying this is very humbling to all of us I think. Ainsley's words are a perfect example of this. You people have all my respect!
  24. What are you studying?
  25. What kind of music does he play in his sets?
