  1. The performance of Doghouse was amazing! It really helped to see how amazing a musician Jonny is, by seeing something he composed. here's the video of the performance: [ame= ] [/ame]
  2. That is a good point. We should consider ourselves to be more so world citizens. But you also make a good point in that it's good we're all different because we can learn from each other... well that's if some of us want to...haha haha yeah... well you're probably thinking of the middle of the country. Here you really don't see too many houses with American Flags in the front of the house or on roofs... pretty much only during the 4th of July time of the year
  3. bump... I dunno if anyone has seen Drew Carey's new show that's just like Whose Line is it Anyway? show is called Drew Carey's Improv-A-Ganza
  4. just saw this newsarticle and figured I'd bump the thread with it http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110520/ap_on_bi_ge/us_ap_poll_gas_prices;_ylt=AkC_jIqrcEn6ArYmjyIMCASs0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTNsYjdoMmRpBGFzc2V0A2FwLzIwMTEwNTIwL3VzX2FwX3BvbGxfZ2FzX3ByaWNlcwRjY29kZQNtb3N0cG9wdWxhcgRjcG9zAzMEcG9zAzgEcHQDaG9tZV9jb2tlBHNlYwN5bl90b3Bfc3RvcnkEc2xrA3ByaWNlc2F0Z2FzcA--
  5. It's impossible (well as of now at least). I'm not saying that we should. I was just bringing up a hypothetical because I was interested to discuss in seeing what the reaction would be of people or if it would be positive or negative. What are your thoughts on the topic?
  6. haha! I think that there will be a lot of people around the country that will be against this, as well as people for it. But I think it's terrible for these stupid congress people to be so ignorant. And it's not just on the topic of banning the teaching of homosexuality. It's the ethical principal of the whole situation. Why should we be censoring our children to be learning about the world around us? Just because we think it's for their own good? It's so stupid. What is good for our children is to teach them as much as we can from all angles and then let them make their decision in life what is right based on facts. In the end all that censoring any topic whether it be on this topic or in terms of political issues or religions or cultures is just making people ignorant and stupid. Also another issue is the fact that it's our elected officials that are telling the teachers what to teach. That's another ethical issue. It's not the governments role to tell us what we can or cannot read or learn about (which is essentially what this is). If anything it's the role of the parents to teach and influence their children whether it be for bad or good
  7. I somewhat agree with you. But I think that it would have to do more with unstable nations that base their laws and rules on religion. I don't know how you can not say that it's not a religious duty for Al Qaeda. Clearly they manipulated their own people by using religion to do such horrific things. You do also make an important thing that it deals with nationalistic/territorial foundations which is true. But you have to also remember that those territories and nations were largely founded on religions. I'm actually not saying that religion and the afterlife/heaven go hand in hand. I mean of course for most people they do, but I'm sure that many people would still continue to be religious having it been a big part of their life. Basically the whole thing I was going after is that would this give positive or negative consequences if it turned out that what most people believe is not true, and what they reaction would be. I also included it in this section to get more of a serious and well thought-out response rather than from the lounge. It is true that it's inconceivable because people might also be in denial. But I'm just asking the question on a completely hypothetical basis if there was a possibility to prove it. I could see why you could think it should be part of the other thread. Perhaps it should've. But I wanted to make a new thread to focus on the speculation of what this could entail. I'm also not trying to poke fun at religion or whatever. I've just thought about it recently, that if there was somehow proof I wonder what the response or reaction would be by the world, and would we be better off or is belief in religion/afterlife a necessity for our existence.
  8. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_obama_mideast I think it's good for Obama to try to help out the situation in the Middle East between Israel and Palestine. I think that their PM does have a point in that you need to be careful of Palestine just because their government has ties with Hamas, which has repeatedly stated for the destruction of Israel. Also the stance of the rest of the Middle East as we know is against Israel for the most part. I do however see how it could possibly help in trying to make amends between the nations and try to get to more of a peaceful situation. But to be honest I have strong doubts that no matter what you do there will be tension. To be honest ideally I think that there should just be an entire neutral nation instated in that area, since it has so many religious connotations. However I know that will never happen.
  9. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110520/ap_on_re_us/us_xgr_tennessee_schools_sexuality I think this is ridiculous for them to pass a law like this. With kids at that age absorbing everything they can, it's just making them completely ignorant of others. How people can actually pass these kinds of bills or have that way of thinking is beyond me.
  10. seeing Jonny Greenwood's Doghouse being performed tonight
  11. yeah Homer Simpson chanting USA over and over again... and we all know how intelligent he is
  12. well I mean I as well as many people wouldn't judge you, because we know your music tastes. And I'm not trying to discredit the other fans of the band either. I just feel that there's bias and that the new album would get far too much credit if other people submitted lists, when it's mediocre (IMO).
  13. ^I mean of course there are idiots everywhere. I guess though since we are the one country that seems to get most of the spotlight that showing those kind of people gives the rest of us a bad rap. It's like if this country was poorer I could somewhat understand people not being informed. I mean those statistics that Maher gave were ridiculous just because so much of this stuff is common knowledge. But I do agree with the fact that if someone from the US does something great that they automatically thank their nation rather them giving themselves credit. However with the God aspect you bring up I actually sort of somewhat take it as being a bit self absorbed. I sort of get the impression that thanking God for an accomplishment, is really just saying Thank you God for making me so great. Don't start with that USA chanting... it annoys the hell out of me
  14. haha... I'm not saying that Clocks, Yellow or Fix You are bad songs or you including them would look bad...haha! I just think there are a lot better songs out there.
  15. Interesting post Chris. I agree to some regard there is a divorce from love of country to love, however I think that peoples morals or beliefs can easily get tied into politics and government. I think of course that patriotism as you mentioned is not on politics but more so on more cultural things. Also the whole stance on freedom is of course the biggest thing that people tend to seem patriotic about. I still think though that our fundamental morals are screwed up in some sense because we have the largest military, and also guns are allowed. From an outside perspective I would see this as being an aggressive nation. The biggest thing that I just see that is screwed up is the huge amount of people being hypocrits. I mean they love this country and they idea of free and equal rights yet don't follow respecting others who are not the same. I was being self-deprecating because I honestly feel that people should not be saying that we are the best country in the world. As should no other country. There are faults in every nation and not one is even close to perfect. Also I was being self-deprecating of Americans because it really gets me annoyed at times as to how ignorant and uninformed people are in this country I mean just watch these things and tell me if you aren't ashamed and angry that these people make up our country [ame= ] [/ame] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpw_9FFhfHI]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpw_9FFhfHI[/ame] It's this feeling of confidence and entitlement that I think allows many Americans feel that they don't need to be informed because they live in "the best country in the world". I do agree that at least from my perspective and where I live in the country that it's mostly us are as you put it "using the stereotype than people who actually correspond with it". I find that coming from a very liberal state and an EXTREMELY liberal town it opens your mind up to be more accepting of others and try to stay informed with the world since it's always a constant debate on how things are. Basically I think I'm just trying to say that people need to be more humble and stop having such huge egos. Do I love living here and the opportunities that I'm given? of course. But I'm not going to put myself on a pedestal just because of what country I'm from and/or look down on people that are from other countries.
  16. yeah I agree. I don't want to see top 15 list after list be filled with all of Viva La Vida as well as Clocks, Fix You and Yellow
  17. yeah, it would be interesting to see also we're going to do The Beatles one over since it was just me and greg who participated in that one
  18. yeah if you could thatd be great! we did that for the RH ones
  19. I had a tough time choosing between B&C but went with C
  20. haha yeah that's weird I went with choice A
  21. I'd be up for the ones in bold because I know the bands relatively well... the other ones I only know like an album or few songs. I'd also like to suggest: The Flaming Lips Pink Floyd Broken Social Scene Beach House Grizzly Bear/Department of Eagles David Bowie ...also we forgot Coldplay
  22. it's a different topic reilly. that one is about the current state of the world as well as the past. this one is more of a speculative thread on what might the world be like if there was no afterlife (not saying no religion, because people would continue to have their own beliefs). I personally think it would make the world safer. There are too many areas of the world where there are too many conflicts based of religious factions killing each other over their beliefs. I think that if people knew that everything wasn't real maybe it would make people see how ridiculous and stupid it is to be fighting. If people knew that there was no afterlife I think they would also focus much more time on making the most of their lives. I'd like to think that human kind would band together especially if we realized that we are completely alone. At the same time I can understand why it make the world less safe because some people might be more likely to do evil things, knowing that there might not be any consequences when they died. Now as Greg pointed out there may be anarchy. Though I can see that being a possibility I feel that since there are already rules and laws in place that people would continue to follow those laws and rules because face it... humans are not ones that like to change their lifestyles overall. I think also it would make people really reevaluate their lives a lot, especially those who follow things like the bible to heart.
  23. really?!? I would've never guessed
