Did you see Phil Harvey's tweet on the bands Twitter? He says he's excited to get Paradise, Up in Flames and Princess of China out there. So no worries!

Probably not 13 for the album, but I really don't see why not. 12 songs at 4 minutes each is only 48 minutes. I really hope the band doesn't put out a really short album even if it has 10 songs. It sounds like they're pretty tired from this recording process - Chris at least. Saying he has nothing left. Not like I believe that will last, but I would hope they can bring at least a bunch of b-sides if not an EP out. Who knows. I'm greedy. :wacky:

Touring is true. But how many people who buy an album see a band live? It's hard to say. U2 did influence bands, but mostly mainstream bands. Radiohead is no product of u2 in anyway. Killers yes, coldplay yes. Many modern bands. But that doesn't mean they changed music. There were bands doing what u2 did before them. Every band is a product of many influences who were products of influences. So technically the first guy to hit a rock influenced all modern drummers. But big clear influences arent easily made.

U2 were not immediately successful. The Joshua tree was their first HUGE album, even though previous records had their hits. It is a different world. The internet has changed music, allowing lots of niche band following. There won't be anyway for anyone to verify popularity in the old fashion way anyway, as digital sales and individual song sales have changed the game. But u2 were not game changes musically, just as coldplay aren't. They just did it better than others and were able to be reborn in new ways. But yeah Beatles are probably an influence on coldplay, as they are on every band since the 60s. Not a big influence though...

If you're telling me that Eno playing a synthesizer on Low is being involved with X & Y, I'm going to complain about the guy who brought them water when they recorded A Whisper, because he really contributed to that song...:rolleyes: I realize Eno is heavily involved in their recording process. I happen to like the direction the band took with him. But will people PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stop acting like Coldplay are just little babies in Eno's evil plan... These are grown men we're talking about. Extremely capable musicians. Capable enough most of the people on these threads worship the ground they walk on. They are happy with the music they are making. Eno is just an addition to their team. Of course you don't have to like that addition. You can complain about it all you like. But realize Coldplay wouldn't still be making AROBTTH 10 years after it came out, even if Eno wasn't here.

Who resurrected this thread? Be weary as it will get some people's underwear in a knot here. Can't really compare the two bands outside of the fact that Coldplay has probably been the greatest contender at taking U2's mantle of biggest rock band in the world. While Coldplay was obviously influenced by U2, within the rock spectrum they are very different and always will be. Coldplay still have not reached U2's critical or commercial heights though, and that isn't an opinion - it's just a fact. You can like Coldplay more (as I do), but you can't dispute that U2 was bigger in their heyday than Coldplay are at this point. Maybe this next album will really catapult them to the top, but I don't know. I hope so!

Honestly, where is this even coming from? Do the band seem like they're on their way out? If anything it's like they're finally getting UP THERE - in their minds (mine as well but if I said that a bunch of you would say how VLV and all the new LP5 stuff suck or something). They wouldn't leave now. They've got AT LEAST two more albums in them after LP5 and I honestly believe they'll push them out faster now. I think we all expected a quicker turn around for LP5, but the fact is you're right about their age. I think they'll push two more albums out there quick and then after that who knows. I really don't want them to become like U2 - hanging on for no apparent reason other than they can come up with somewhat good crap in their sleep. I want them to continue to push forward for as long as they can. It'll be a sad day when they say goodbye, but I'm glad I'm 21 as they're about to release their new album. I think we can expect 10 more years of them and by that time I'll be 31 and I think I'll need them a little less.

Haha eno was not in the picture at all during x & y. Nice try putting that on him. I can't wait for everything they come to us with. People need to get over this idea coldplay would be different without eno. It's not what he's done but what they chose to do.

does anyone really expect something today? i get being hopeful...but probably no point in keeping on it at a minute to minute rate. chris said in an interview they'd hopefully be done in six weeks, but just because today is technically the beginning of the seventh week doesn't mean they're going to be like, "TA DAAAAA! HERE IT IS" That's obviously an exaggeration, but I'm doubting any news. My feeling is that it's like watching a clock - time goes by much slower when you count the seconds and much faster when you don't. It's all perspective, but I'll be happy to wake up one day (soon - a relative term) and find a nice big announcement. :)

I wouldn't be surprised if the band announce something during a bit of down time soon (I don't know when they have the most time off between dates), but I expect they'll put out all the details incrementally. No reason to announce the tracklisting two months before release. Which doesn't mean they couldn't, it just means there is no real incentive for them do that. I bet they'll sort of slowly build buzz for it and then one day they'll spill as much as they can without putting it on shelves near you. But who knows. While some people may hate this period of time on Coldplaying (myself included) where everyone is just sort of pointlessly talking about nothing, I think I'm more worried about when we have something to talk about... Because then all hell will break loose.

Certainly nothing wrong with speculating if you enjoy it, but personally I think its a pretty pointless exercise. Peoples opinions here are all biased anyways. Some people would love to believe coldplay came to the festivals and played shit songs they won't put on the album because they think the songs are bad. People are biased. If people were rational they'd realize there's probably four guarantees - mm, Charlie brown, hlh, usatw and that's it. I realize most people don't want etiaw because they hate it or are greedy coldplayers (aren't we all?) But I think there's the slimmest of chances it doesn't make the cut. But please debate all this to your hearts content. I'll be happy when they finally tell us.

Wedding bells isn't likely, as the band have said it and Christmas lights were sister songs

No reason a bunch of fans with their underwear in knots need to prevent people from enjoying the album. Honestly, the minute its out I'm not coming on this forum for weeks if not months. I'll check the site, but this forum is really just a place for the most discontented to kick and scream. It's become very tiring. Nothing wrong with people sharing opinions, but what's been going on here for a while is a bit much.

Some people on this thread need to acknowledge the fact they chose to ruin the new album by listening to the festivals. People act like coldplay have done something wrong. You can want more songs, as I do, but those who are annoyed with the band about it need to relax. As for etiaw being on the album...did you all see the video and pics they put out. New album stuff everywhere

We know the Oracle is debs because she performed a similar function for the band pre-viva on the website and would sign debs. She also comes on the forum and answers our questions. And some have met her. She is the Oracle...why do people keep questioning this? And even if she wasn't, what's the difference?

Us Against the World will be on the album because it is one of the most clear demonstrations of the albums content. Us Against the World is repeated in another song. I'm sure it will be repeated in one we haven't heard. Chaos as it swirls is the reason we have those "galactic" swirls. The fact that we hear no synths or obvious production is because its being played live. And Coldplay "eras" are never as well defined as other bands. Coldplay's first two albums may seem they adhere to a certain style, but VLV certainly did not. Every song was very different in how it was approached musically. Maybe they had similar structures, but the filling was different. Different instruments. Different pacings... UATW is not ruled out because its different in those respects. Do we expect a Coldplay album of all upbeat rockers? They always throw in a change of pace.

I'd love to believe we'd have 10-12 new songs on an album and these new live ones are just goodies, but I really don't believe Coldplay consider any of these songs to be throw aways. Have any of you read the blogs by Roadie 42 lately? I know you have. Actually, I don't know why I didn't think of this earlier. But you read how much he played up ETIAW and Charlie Brown already sounding like greatest hits. Do you remember how Chris said something along the lines of, "you'll remember these songs someday". These are not words that would or ever could have been spoken about any of the throwaways before AROBTTH. I realize a lot of Coldplayers don't like the new material, and I don't think there's anything wrong with hoping, but there are going to be a lot of people shitting all over LP5 if they aren't happy with what we've heard so far. In the words of Zach Galifranakous (I'm not pretending to know how to spell his name...), check yourself before you wreck yourself.

I really feel like a lot of Coldplayers are going to be in for a sad realization when the album tracklist is released and the songs we've heard are nearly all on it. The idea that the bad wouldn't play a greatest hits setlist at festivals is pretty flawed, because Chris himself has apologized for playing new songs. While he's being self-deprecating in saying that, we know he wouldn't be saying that at a Coldplay concert. Cause everyone would flip if they played new material. I'm sure the band has some stuff up their sleeves. We've heard what - seven new songs? One of them only once - but still. I have to feel there's a good chance they'll be on the album. Coldplay don't just write music for their fans - they also exist in the modern music world where many artists and bands release all their songs before the album or play all of them live. I expect plenty of other songs to come out of the LP5 era, I just don't expect all the one's we've heard to be some special "festival circuit setlist". Charlie Brown, HLH, MM, Us Against the World, ETIAW - they're all here to stay. Of them, I'd only be marginally skeptical about the inclusion of MM and ETIAW. But thematically MM seems to be very important and apart of the other songs. Maybe just maybe ETIAW was just going to be a throw away single. I wouldn't put it past them. But part of me doesn't believe the band would come out with a new single for the world, and not believe that single was good enough or fitting for the album. It was their reintroduction to the wider world outside of us Coldplayers. I just have to think they'd come out trying to hit a homerun.

There is also a reference to the Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz - in reference to his heart. And I didn't know that 1984 reference! That's very cool. I suppose some people may say 42 is a reference to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but I think that reference would be lost on most people (as it was me until so many pointed it out on this forum). These other references are very much staples of culture.

Aside from the very obvious Charlie Brown titled song, has anyone found the references to certain cultural staples (some of them cartoons) slightly odd in the new music. There are a few references to Peter Pan, among some other things. These might not seem like a big deal, but for a band that has never referenced anything in that way (unless I'm mistaken) I've found it surprising and am curious as to how it will appear in the rest of their new material. I've wondered what everyone else's take on it is, as I haven't seen much discussion of it. I'm not sure how lost these references will be on those who didn't grow up in English speaking places but they're pretty clear from my twenty year old American perspective.

I mean, if you mean what will be the biggest song from the new album, I think Charlie Brown just might. I do think it's in need of a name change though. To reference such a culturally popular American character in your song title, just doesn't seem to be very Coldplay. I certainly understand the reference, because the song seems to be about Chris Martin being the type of kid who keeps running up to kick the football even though he always has it pulled away. I actually love that reference, but I would have preferred it lyrically and not in the title. That aside, I think CB may just be the big single on the album and if that's the case that'd be great. But who wouldn't love an even better song.
