for a while i thought we could guess correctly on stuff like this, but it seems like the band change their mind or their story every week. remember the solar system thing was from a post way back in the summer and we heard from the band that christmas lights as a single was only thought up in late october early november - meaning the ss probably wasn't for that. even though there was stuff in the video. the thing about coldplay is that they aren't like the sort of hardcore album theme people. i think there are a few bands/artists that might commit to something like a concept album. i think coldplay might have a "sort of" concept album - nothing more. and all this science stuff is just meh. it's not like chris ever says anything in a song that's more than a general acknowledgement of science/history/geographic locations.

I happen to think the schedule does suggest an album release before the tours start, but I don't know. I feel like we haven't been given much solid information from any corner. Just a lot of who knows. But May seems a possibility.

as some have said, i'd be interested in hearing a studio version but i don't really want it on the album. for one - i've already heard it. i want new stuff. and i feel whatever makes the album cut will be better than both these songs. even though i like them both.

i'm quite certain 99% of Coldplay fans have not met the band. there are a lot of reasons someone couldn't. i've not met the band. if i do it'd be a surprise and it's not something i'm necessarily attempting to do. i'm lucky enough to be abroad in england for the academic year and that's allowed me to get to totp and the boat trip, but i don't think i'd want to head to the bakery or the beehive. i wouldn't know what to say and i'm not really the rabid fan type so it'd probably be a bit odd...

okay, maybe I just don't want to get too excited about this, but is it blasphemy to question the guy who talked to jonny about it? phil said in his interview that he wasn't sure about it coming out this year. i realize he's as much part of the band as everyone, so i wouldn't be surprised by misinformation, but i just don't know. seems really hopeful to expect it to be done. even if it is, i suppose i'd expect it to be a long time until the actual release as well. at least june probably. i would be so happy to be wrong. and to those saying it could be worse than x & y...i don't think that's possible. they're only getting better

I hope not for the album. As for Eno. I don't know what to make of that because I'm not really sure how his influence would affect their music. I loved VLV. I think, if anything, his influence could refine their stuff a bit more. I think he's only dangerous when he actually is writing the song - like on U2's last album. I think he probably considers himself above doing anything like that with Coldplay. I'm sure he's just helping them along.

i found phil's answers pretty interesting and exciting. i feel like the prospekt thing has been answered. we learned the album is in such a state that he's not even sure if it will be out during 2011 (WHICH IS TERRIBLE NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Brian Eno is more involved in this album - I found this surprising as I know we heard from somewhere that he was less of an influence on the new sessions. Clearly that has changed. Amsterdam might be in the new set list. The outfits for Christmas Lights were a one-off. On this board some people wondered if they might be apart of a new tour (and the albums greater concept), but I guess not. And...Famous Old Painters was mixed and Phil loved it. WHAT?! I always thought it was really stupid that we wondered so much about that song, so I find this really cool to learn. I suppose someone said it can't see the light of day, but I'd be so happy to hear it. I wish they could just give it away to us!

the idea of a concept album about a wedding sounds sort of meh...about a couple could be realyl cool though. regardless of the fact that we know wedding bells won't be on the album, i could never see them doing a concept album that had anything to do with them wearing what you'd wear to a wedding... i mean, the piss that would taken of them would be outrageous. wedding singer references and wedding band references would never leave. if you commit to a concept it's got to be a fucking great one. the band did a half concept with the revolutionaries thing, which is why they didn't get made fun of for it. they didn't go all out. if they did...who knows what would have happened. but yeah, wedding bells isnt even on the album so...

that is a positive way of looking at it! at first i felt disappointed because i very much liked the concept (as i grandly began to imagine it in my head) of the song in a larger album. however, i have to feel if its not included there would be something better. with b-sides or eps i also think a recorded version could still see the light of day. this does sort of make me wonder more about the album though. the magazine interview now seems the only way to consider how it will be and i felt that left something to be desired

i really think we all have to consider that this is Coldplay saying they'll do a concept album. i love the idea of a concept album, but considering the framework within which they write music, i don't imagine it deviating enough from their normal structure to have the concept noticed by many people. chris may be writing lyrics in this way, but i doubt we'll notice something that significant. especially if it is an intimate album. to the world coldplay only write intimate albums...

Guy has always looked this way to me - all the way back to Parachutes. I'm not sure what his deal is, but he definitely isn't enjoying himself like the rest of the band. It used to worry me but I've just come to live with it.

This was a really good experience - much better than the night on the Thames for me. I really enjoyed being able to see the band up and close (a first time for me), and they also seemed in very good spirits. It was a lot of fun. Chris continued to make me feel he could moonlight as a stand-up comedian. What he told everyone about the boat cruise was hilarious - something to the effect of, "lots of drugs. just a massive orgy. some of the spice girls showed up as well". I nearly died laughing. Everyone else in the band looked good. Jonny and Will seemed in good spirits. Guy seemed like himself - haha. I'm so glad I was able to make it (or rather chose to miss lecture to make it...)

every time i look through threads like these i'm just amazed by the variety of interactions people have with coldplays music. in criticizing the viva era, some people say it's radio friendly and other people say its experimental. sometimes people same them at the same time! if coldplay's greatness can be found anywhere, it's in their ability to bring together lots of different musical appetites to the table. i'm happy now because i think the food we're going to be fed, if not in outcome but in the way it was cooked, will be to my liking.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT???? I'm not even a massive fan of Yellow, but I think Parachutes (despite some of the adulation around it on this forum) definitely has a few songs that aren't particularly brilliant. Even boring...dare I say it here...:curtain:

Does anyone think that some of the backlash against certain hits has only to do with the fact that they were overplayed on the radio? I think it's a TRULY incredible song (in the mind of the listener) that can stand up to being overplayed on the radio. It's got to be a song you really love. As I'm a real fan of Coldplay (like us all), it's almost pointless to mention all the songs I think are just as good if not better than hits - this vs someone who might only know them from the radio. I wonder to myself if I'd like certain "hits", like Clocks, more if I hadn't heard them so often. I certainly feel Viva la Vida has suffered (if only slightly) in my appreciation of it because I loved (and listened to) it so much the first six months after it's release.

I thought when Chris had said this, that he said bad vibes in the group and he referred to a particularly tough time someone apart of their crew was going through. Meaning that it hadn't been the band specifically. But on this point I could be wrong. Frankly, none of us can know. Any group of people who spend a significant amount of time together get on each others nerves. And these guys are a band trying to make music when I'm sure all of them have different ideas (at times) of what they should be doing. They wouldn't be human if they didn't have issues.

you see, if after LP5 they stopped i'd be devastated. i really do think a band making the kind of music they do can still pull stuff off into their mid forties without a drop of quality or direction. honestly, the bands that have kept going as long as they have are, in a way, precisely the bands that should look stupid for doing it. U2 were a band of energy and passion, and when they try to harness that now you get songs like Vertigo (maybe some people liked it) or I don't even know. After Achtung Baby, U2 may have made many good songs but they've made no terrific albums. The Rolling Stones are another band - sex, drugs and rock and roll. Yet they're still doing it at their age. It defies logic but in some ways it doesn't. The people who love them find nostalgia in their music. For a band like Coldplay, the "core" of the music has never really tapped into any well that I see drying out with age. I really don't think Coldplay have yet even peaked in how they will be remembered. I think they've got at least ten more years ahead of them. With LP5 on the way this year, that tells me we should get AT LEAST to LP7 before the idea creeps into their heads. If there's anything I'd expect, it'd be that they relax how much they tour because they'll want to spend time with their families. But that might just mean more albums! So I wouldn't mind.

Can you pass for older? Just seem really confident. I'm not from the UK though, so I don't really know how they go about these things here. They always check my credit card signature when I pay for things though...unlike in the US where you could scribble anything. By which I mean...they seem to take some things seriously.

I certainly hope so. Part of me wondered if they might have promised him a better answer or something like that. However, I think some people seem to think that June is late in a way, but I assumed the way they were talking they meant much later. I feel like if it was June they'd be...you know almost there. And to VivaChild - did you mean Christmas Lights wasn't a simple song by your post? I had thought it was extremely simple. It's interesting on this site the variety of fans. A lot of people disliked Christmas Lights because they felt it was simple and some disliked it because they thought it wasn't? Or maybe just because it didn't sound like it would be on Parachutes? Coldplay really do bring a lot of different people together - which is a really cool thing.
