Guitarist Joe Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarism
I'm not using it as an argument, I am just saying how I feel. Look, everyone is going to speculate what happened because of how this thing is playing out and what this guy wants. Does it not seem odd that he's only asking for money and not credit? I've stated this plenty of times but I feel that it is awfully strange for a musician, who is supposed to take pride in their work, to only ask for money but no credit. Any professional whether it's a musician, artist, actor, writer, and so forth wants credit for their own creation along with monetary compensation, but not this guy. His actions makes people speculate as to what happened. I also said in an earlier post that I thought the reason why he might not have been asking for credit is because it's not his own work and now that looks possible. BTW...I have listened to the songs and I said what I thought about 'em in my first post. Don't get me wrong, I have no ill will to this guy but I'm losing respect for this guy because of his lack of wanting credit for something that he supposely created. If one doesn't even want credit but only money then how does that make them look? IMO, it does not make them look good at all.

Of course it's common to ask for financial compensation. However, it's common among musicians to also demand recognition and be given credit in a song's listing. I don't know why that part is so overlooked but it is. He is only asking for money and no recognition. I guess his attitude is "Screw the credit, I just want the money." For someone who supposed to take pride in their work he obviously is showing that by not also asking for credit. Also, musicians normally ask for 20% to 50% of the royalities but not this guy...he's asking for the whole shabang, 100% of the song's royalities. IMO, I think Coldplay is doing the right thing by not saying anything and letting their legal team do the work. This is a sensitive issue and it's best for them to handle it and not let Chris or the others say something that could hurt them. I do believe that something must have happened behind closed doors and it must have been bad enough for this guy to file suit and ask only for money and nothing else. It makes me think that he was asking only for money at the get-go among other things and that is why Coldplay told him to screw off. IMO, If he wanted credit then he should also be wanting credit now.

Favorite Coldplay Lyrics
"You might be a big fish in a little pond. Doesn't mean you've won 'cause along may come a bigger one". "You thought you might be a ghost. You didn't get to heaven but you made it close". (I'm always singing this in the shower. LOL!)

I do agree that this is a PR nightmare for Coldplay. I also agree that Mr. Satriani is taking a beating from some Coldplay fans and that he does not need the money, but money is all this guy is asking for and I believe that is the reason why so many fans are really after him. He's not asking for some royalities and credit, he's only asking for all royalities. IMO, that is very suspicious and that is why I have problems with this whole situation. Why not also ask for credit since "supposely" Coldplay plagiarize a rift from him? If he created the riff then he should also be asking for credit but he's not. It makes one wonder whether or not he stole that riff off of someone else who does not know it or even cares. No matter what happens it will not take away my love for this band.

Now, Eddie is a guitarist. IMO, he is one of the greatest guitarists out there. Seriously, who would not want to be like Eddie? I would love to see Jonny do an imitation of Eddie.

One thing...I don't buy that he was "too busy" to file the suit earlier. His attorneys could have filed the suit earlier because they are normally the ones to do the filing. Even if he had to be there, it would only take a hour to do so and he could not find the time to spare that hour or so. Sorry, but I am not buying it. It all smacks of money and him wanting all, not some, but all of it. The reason why I see it this way is because when the song first came out who knew it would be so successful and make a lot of money for the band. Now that time has passed and one can get see how much money the song has made and the recognition it has garnered then all of that can help them assess how much money he "should" get. Another thing, all musicians have a legal team. So when incidents come up they file suit right away. I don't know any respectable musician who waits for half a year to file a claim. Musicians are protective of their music so when things like this happens they file suit right away, but he didn't. As for him being a "fan" of Coldplay...really? And, that is supposed to make things all better and cheery? I don't think so. Plus, how do you know he plays their music on his bus? Have you been on it? Listen, I am not taking this issue on the side of Coldplay but as a lover of music. I just can't stand how this has played out, which in so many ways do not make any sense. I think I would care more if he wanted credit but he does not want that, he wants money and only money. IMO, that raises a red flag.

Did he add an extra ding, as he called it, at the end of each dinging section? I listened to that crap over and over and I did not hear that extra ding he was talking about. I loved how he said that since he added an extra ding that it was not the same as Queens/David Bowie. LOL!! What an idiot!!! Now that is what you call plagiarism. BTW....What did Queen/David Bowie get out of that incident. Did they get all the royalities from that song because he did make a lot of money for it or did they just want credit?

They get voted on by members of the Recording Academy, and I think Coldplay is a member of the Recording Academy so they can vote for themselves. LOL!! To be a member of the Recording Academy one has to have credit on 6 commercially released tracks and Coldplay qualifies. Members can be musicians, artists who deisgned the CD covers, producers, composers, recording engineers, arrangers, music video artists, and so on. So, it's a large group of people voting on this.

Well, I agree. I was just saying that because of the courts in this country and how they like to reward money on any and everything. Again, I agree with you. I think this incident carries the accusation that Coldplay are stupid. No musician is that stupid, well, except for Vanilla Ice. As to your question as to whether record companies check to see if their artists plagiarized another song....no, they do not. There are millions of songs out there that it would be impossible to know. However, the music execs do listen to the given CD and determine whether or not a song should be put on a CD or not, or whether more songs are needed for the CD. If by chance they hear a familiar tune then they would say something, well hopefully they would say something.

I'm late on this but I do have to agree with you that he would not get all the royalities from the entire album. Instead, he would only get the royalities from the song. The problem with this is that he wants all the royalities from the song but no credit. Where in his lawsuit is he asking for credit? No where, and that is what is really ticking people off. Musicians always say that want credit for their work, but not this guy. Musicians normally ask for credit, and if they wanted, some royalities but not all. Again, this guy is not doing that. If he cares about his work then why isn't he also asking for credit? Why? Because he doesn't really care about his work. I guess the recession has hit his *** hard and he needs money badly. If, and that is a big if, the band did use some of his music by accident then he should only get a percentage of the royalities and not all. I don't think you will find any fan saying that he doesn't deserve some money if that is the case.

Yeah and how many rap artists ripped off other artists? A lot. LOL!! Most artists want credit and not money. From all the reports, Satriani wants all the royalities and not the credit.

I agree with your previous post, Fakfak. I think the only reason why people hate Coldplay is because they make simple but beautiful music and that is something that many people want to hear and a lot of folks don't understand it. Personally, I don't get all the plagiarism claims because I don't think Coldplay sounds like any other artist out there. Maybe it's because I am listening at something deeper and not the shallow parts that most folks listen for. I think someone stated this earlier but every musician is influenced by another musician(s) and do copy their influences in many ways. That is just a part of the music biz. So, basically everyone can claim some form of plagiarism. IMO, this guy is doing this for money and nothing else. I will stand by my previous statement that any respectable musician would have filed suit as soon as the song came out instead of waiting months to do so. I know I would've because it's my work and I would want credit for it. You simply don't wait months to do something. The song has been played so much that there is no way it took him this long to determine whether his song was being copied by Coldplay. Until he proves it otherwise, I just think he's in it for the money and not the recognition. So I guess he doesn't care about his music as much as he claims. Sorry, but that is how I feel.

Why are you worried about the Grammys? There's nothing that Coldplay can do when it comes to the Grammys. All in all, it just depends on the Grammy voters. Some might consider it and others may not. Heck, there might be some who don't even know who this guy is so it might not have any impact on them. Also, some voters might be thinking the way I am thinking, and that is why wait this long to file suit on this issue, and just ignore it.

That's not nice to say. One more thing...no record company is advising him to sue. Record companies do not do that. They're only interested in suing if the music is downloaded illegally. They have no concerns about artists and their work. All of that business is left to the artist and if they care enough to sue than it's up to them and not the record companies because they are not getting any money out of it.

It's interesting to see that Coldplay is the only pop/rock artist to receive a lot of nominations. The top nominees are in the Rap/R&B categories (Lil' Wayne - 8, Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Ne-Yo each have 6). I think that shows the sad state of American music especially when it comes to groups.

A few things come across my mind when I heard about this.... 1) Is he suing the Creaky Boards for copying his song? Obviously they must have copied off of him since they wrote their song after him and they said Coldplay copied their song, right? Wouldn't it make sense that he goes after Creaky Boards? My guess is he is not going after them because there's no money there. 2) The timing of this is just so wrong. IMO, and I am not trying to diss him, but any respectable musician/person would file suit right away if they feel their music was illegally copied and not wait half of year to file suit. Of course, waiting all that time allows the earnings build up which means he can "get" more if ruled in his favor. Ex...Different musician but when Avril Lavigne had that song "Girlfriend" a band went after her right away but this guy didn't do that AFAIK. 3) He wants this to go to be tried by a jury, well, if I was a juror I would already have doubts about his claim. I would doubt the timing of his claim and the fact that he waited as long as he did to file a claim. 4) Finally, I really don't see that much similarity between the two songs that warrants this type of action.

It's for Best New Artist. But as I stated in the other Grammy thread, there is a "curse" on that award. It seems that many of the Best New Artist winners, not all though, tend to disappear from the music scene not long after they win it. I think many folks will tell that they would rather not win that award because of that curse. If you take a look at the list of winners, many of the artists are not around anymore, don't have their music played on the radio or TV, and so on. So, I want the Jonas Bros to win it so that they can be hit with "the curse". Man, I feel like I should be talking about something else when I say, "the curse." LOL!

Yep, the big hits are normally the songs that get performed at the Grammys. I wouldn't mind VLV because I really like that song. But, I really would love to hear them perform Lost. I think that song would really rock out the Staples Center with the drum beats and all. I say get that place rocking. LOL!! Perhaps if they perform Lost then the results will be the opposite of the song title? Instead of losing they'll win all the awards.

Yeah, I was thinking of something else when I typed that. LOL!! Still, I think performing there and then flying to Japan would be pushing it just a bit, but knowing them and the Grammys, I can see them performing at the Grammys. They are one of the top contender so I am sure the Grammys would want them to perform.

I don't think they'll perform because the Grammys are on the 8th of February and they have a concert in Japan on the 11th, so that would be pushing it just a bit. But, who knows?

Did anyone else noticed how loud the audience got when they said Coldplay when announcing the nominees? They got a better reception there than they did at the AMAs.

I wonder if Coldplay leads all the artists in terms of the number of nominations. They have seven and I wonder if any other artist has seven or more nominations. I hope not. I think they will win some but I am not totally positive that they will win them all. The Grammys are a tricking bunch and they are hard to predict at times.
