Listen to the climax in Exit Music. Thom Yorke lyrically is far better then Chris Martin. Also you can't totally judge a band by the amount of records they sell, considering a lot of Coldplay buyers are high school girls. Radiohead is deep, it takes time to fully understand their poetry. Coldplay is easy to read on the surface.
