Well, I don't think the character is supposed to fit him, so much as he's supposed to fit the character. Having said that, there are a couple of things that help me understand where you're coming from. Clive can't pull off facial hair very well, so he doesn't look quite right as Hemingway. Also, he doesn't have the best American accent in the world, so in that avenue, he probably doesn't sound very believable.
