  1. OK, my turn! pre-13: I grew up on a rural property and went to a small primary school where kids really didn't care that much about music, myself included. Although I've always been the most muscially-minded in my family, at that point in time I only really listened to whatever was playing on the radio (classic rock) or whatever my friends were listening to. My first ever album was Dido, haha. 13-18: I felt myself being drawn towards music but I never really found a band that I loved for ages. I used to listen to a lot of instrumental music (mostly from movies, my favourite was from Pirates of the Caribbean) and then just whatever my friends were into because I didn't know how to find new music. The main one I remember being "into" was Lostprophets. I also liked Greenday but easily grew bored of the repetitiveness of this sort of music. I also liked the Presets, but everyone did :P The only band I really 'discovered' on my own at this point in time was The Killers, still one of my favourite bands to date. I also grew a strong dislike for the classic-rock radio station my parents used to listen to because I just got sick of hearing the same songs. Eventually they switched to a more modern "rock" station (featuring the likes of Nickelback etc) but I rarely heard a song that really grabbed my attention. Then one day I heard Starlight by Muse on said station and instantly fell in love with it. I decided I had to try to find out more about this band and started listening to them on the internet and found their music so different to what I was used to listening to and so refreshing that I went and bought Black Holes & Revelations straight away; the beginning of an obsession that led me to getting their entire collection of albums, b-sides and a few live/random recordings. I also saw an ad for Coldplay's Viva La Vida on TV around this time and spontaneously ordered it because I'd heard some Coldplay songs and loved them. It wasn't long before I had their entire set of albums too, but I wasn't quite as obsessed with them as with Muse. For quite a while then if anyone asked what I listened to I'd just say "Muse, Coldplay and the Killers." And that really was all I listened to. 18-19 (now): Eventually my obsession for Muse faded and I grew bored of listening to the same music, though I still love all three of those bands. Last year I went to my first concert ever- Coldplay. I was so blown away by the show that I re-developed my obsession for the band and signed up to this forum. When I got over this I decided that I wanted to find more music that was like the stuff I knew and loved, so I went into the World of Music section to see what people on here listened to - and I haven't looked back since. I know it's only really been just over a year since I started really getting into music but I feel like I've come a long way in this time. It also means that pretty much all the bands I listen to now are bands that have released an album in the last year or two :P Dominating my library now: Arcade Fire, Editors, Vampire Weekend, Kasabian, Radiohead, The Temper Trap, Florence And the Machine, Foals, Mumford & Sons, Arctic Monkeys, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Elbow, Eskimo Joe, Oasis, Phoenix, Delphic, Two Door Cinema Club, The Strokes, White Lies, Powderfinger, U2 (who have kinda been there the whole way through, I just never used to listened to whatever of theirs wasn't played on the radio. Even though my Dad was/is a huge fan of theirs), and of course I still listen to The Killers, Coldplay and Muse, plus other bands of all different genres including a few more folky ones like Animal Collective and Fleet Foxes. I've only recently started being able to tolerate hip-hop too, so my taste is still ever-changing. Like deaths_friend I really rely on Triple J for discovering new music and it's very reliable. Long story short: I've finally discovered the sort(s) of music that I love :D
  2. I didn't realise Laneway festival was so small. I think I'd rather see Arcade Fire at their own show anyway. Anyone know when we should expect the announcement? And about how much tickets will be?
  3. ^^Let's hope these predictions are more accurate than your BDO predictions! I think you'd be safe to cross the Drums off that list straight away, given they're kinda not together any more :P Heard the good news about the aria noms, my vote would go to Angus and Julia, then Temper Trap, then Cloud Control in order of what you put above :wacky:
  4. Well I'm glad I didn't stay up! The only bands I'd be interested in seeing and that I haven't seen before are Black Keys LCD Soundsystem Crystal Castles John Butler Children Collide Yep, Sunset Sounds and/or Laneway for me. Hopefully both! Or maybe save for Arcade Fire shows :D Haha, I know that! It's just a lot for me, is all :P Cut Copy only played one new song apart from Where I'm Going, because they came on stage 10min late. But the new one I heard was good, a bit the same but different if you know what I mean! It had jungle drums in it anyway :P Also, very annoyed there were no Wombats sideshows too. But that's what I'm banking on as well.
  5. Yeah, it was really relaxed. Which was great for me, it meant people were very generous with tips :P Also, even though I only got to the stage 15min before cut copy I managed to get pretty close to the front, and then some guy gave me his spot at the barrier. You'd never see that at BDO, ha! And yeah I am having a big year, here's what I've been to so far: 05.01.2010 Kasabian 26.01.2010 Big Day Out 20.02.2010 Good Vibrations 07.05.2010 Lisa Mitchell 11.05.2010 Vampire Weekend 04.06.2010 Miami Horror 25.06.2010 Go Between Bridge Charity Concert 25.07.2010 Kasabian 30.07.2010 - 01.08.2010 Splendour in the Grass 13.08.2010 Art vs Science 11/12.09.2010 Valley Fiesta 24.09.2010 Angus and Julia Stone 25.09.2010 Cut Copy @ Parklife Holy wow. I may need to slow down :P I can't believe my first ever gig was only last year :/ Oh and I put my name down to work at Sunset Sounds next year :D
  6. Me too (though I can't say football's really my sport... :P), I only watched the AFL because I happened to be in Victoria during the Grand Final. But yeah, pretty much the biggest thing here with football is Origin. Even I watch Origin every now and then :P
  7. Ahhhhhhh! I can't stay up that late, I've become a bit of a softy because I have uni at 8 every morning.... but I will surely check it in the morning! Fingers and toes crossed for Arcade Fire!! Also, Parklife was awesome :D I was working at a bar that was close to the stage Wombats, Darwin Deez, Kele and Dandy Warhols were playing at, it was a tease because from where I was the sound of the bands was competing with a really loud speaker playing crap music near the bar, but I managed to catch parts of songs here and there :D Also, I got off early enough to catch Cut Copy's entire set. Freaking awesome band, that.
  8. Agree! Last year I watched an entire AFL game for the first time, ever, and I know the players have tactics etc but it seriously looked like they were just tackling each other randomly, it was hilarious :P
  9. Haha! I got a 13 inch white macbook, also 2009 edition. I kinda wanted to go the pro but decided I didn't really need it, thought I'd save the few extra $$$ it would've cost. It hasn't taken me nearly as long as I thought it would to get the hang of it either, after a couple of hours of playing around I worked everything out. I love it  I think we'll get along juuuuust fine :D And I love JB Hifi for conveniently timing a computer sale for me! :P
  10. ^That's right, and no they didn't. So I'm really looking forward to seeing the setup! And I am still looking forward to seeing Angus and Julia, of course! :D EDIT: Just got back from seeing the duo. Best show I've seen by them, definitely! You wouldn't know they'd been on tour for well over a month now! Had a good spot at the top of the theatre so I could sit down, heard a few new songs which is always good. Great show, as expected!
  11. Late november will be exam time for me, but I suppose that's my own fault for going to the uni I go to :P Whenever you guys decide to do it I'll make sure I make some free time! So, I'm going to see Angus and Julia tomorrow night. I'm not as excited as I normally would be simply because it's the third time I'm seeing them in as many months... but the friend I'm going with is really excited so it should be good  And then, of course, PARKLIFE on Saturday :awesome: :awesome: PSYCHED!
  12. Your musical compatibility with Surrefugl is LOW Music you have in common includes Jónsi, Radiohead, Sigur Rós, Coldplay and Oasis. sig
  13. Joy Division - Shadowplay :awesome: I only really know it because The Killers covered it, but still, it's awesome  Sig
  14. Oh is she? I'd rather Ellen to be honest, she's much funnier. In news that's probably more exciting (for me, anyway :P), I finally bought a mac today :smug:
  15. Woo!! Best acronym ever  When are those awards, btw? Edit: Parklife maps/times finally came out! They put Wombats on at 3:00pm.. EFFF. I really hope I get the bar near that stage now (it's clearly the best stage anyway - Last Dinosaurs, Darwin Deez, Wombats, Kele, Dandy Warhols and Cut Copy all playing on that stage...) cos I'll probably still be working at that time.
  16. Agreed. And I've never had anything to do with pitchfork, really. Why do people hate them so much?
  17. ^^ Ohhh awesome!! I really can't see why people wouldn't like Passion Pit, they were great! The ENTIRE crowd (which had to have been about 20 - 25 thousand people) were dancing and jumping up and down and going crazy! Unfortunately I wasn't in the thick of the mosh, as they were playing on the last night of a huge 3-day festival and I was exhausted lol, but I would have loved to have been in there! I've definitely see them again :awesome: Where are you seeing them?
  18. The best bands I saw there apart from Muse were Powderfinger (aussie band) and the Temper Trap, though other bands that I missed/only saw parts of were Eskimo Joe (another aussie band) and Passion Pit, though I've seen them both anyway :wacky: I also saw Dizzee Rascal, and though I'm not usually into that sort of stuff he was really good!! The best part was that I went to the Melbourne leg of the festival  I love Melbourne :laugh3: nice new siggy!
  19. Haha, fair enough! I also think it's hilarious how they started spelling "hear" wrong :P I'd love to go to America one day! I actually kinda want to go everywhere one day, actually :P Is this the first time you've seen them?? This will be my second, I saw them at a festival in January this year :awesome:
  20. I have The Suburbs by Arcade Fire :wacky:
  21. Wow, I really am very stubborn when it comes to some things :blank:
  22. ^ That's so exciting!!! I'm seeing them in Brisbane, Aus :wacky: I think it will be the biggest non-festival mosh I've ever been in! :D What about you, where are you seeing them? And awwwww you don't like Feeling Good? :P
  23. Grace. replied to Dejan's topic in The World Of Music
^ Ha, that's awesome. If I hadn't used all my downloads yesterday I'd probably download a song or two purely for the hell of it :P
  24. I just watched a video from a few pages back and it got me all excited again to be seeing them again in a couple of months!!
