  1. And foreign men. And women too. And animals. And viruses.
  2. Is this in terms of it makes you feel ill when you're near alcohol (like I do with vodka, after one heavy evening a few years back) or is it because you don't trust yourself to drink responsibly?
  3. I'm not aware of a culture that achieves this.
  4. Sweet, we're off...
  5. Christ, is he still posting non-stop about City?

I'm half back but losing patience as there doesn't seem to be enough people around who will talk about anything interesting and get debates going. I don't wanna have to make another religion thread to drive the people out of their doldrums and get things moving but I might have to resort to it. I should probably leave it a little longer I guess.
  7. Post when you're sober and others aren't, when you're in an enforced period of sobriety (ie have given up, or for health reasons), or just discuss the positives and negatives of sobriety. I've pretty much given up alcohol this year. I was going to go the whole year without alcohol but that changed when my girlfriend didn't want to drink alone on her anniversary, so I had two small glasses of wine to celebrate, last month. That is my only alcohol intake this year so far. I also received a bottle of wine as a gift yesterday, and since my birthday is late this month I will have a glass of it then. So it's not a total ban on booze, but I'm down from 1-3 times a week to special occasions (and even then, not getting drunk). I've enjoyed not drinking. I'm sure I will be drunk again at some point, I'm not taking any moral high ground or pretending as though I'm gonna be doing this forever. I decided to try some time without drinking and found I enjoyed it. I have also not forgotten the benefits of alcohol, though. I wouldn't say I miss them as such, but I am glad that I have experienced them. As for the sobriety, I mostly enjoy not talking bollocks after too much drink, and not having a wasted next day of recovery with the hangover. And also, it's helping me weight and finance wise, which is a nice bonus. This thread can be about sobriety from anything you want, I just chose to discuss alcohol in the OP.

Saw the word in one of Nick's threads further down the list and wanted people's thoughts on it. It's an interesting beast, culture. It shapes who you are and is therefore vitally important, both it's positive and negative aspects. It's highly likely much of what you believe and indeed take for granted is based on your culture. The laws in your culture, how diverse and open to diversity your culture is, the music of your culture, the media of your culture, all affect you. Even down to the language you speak. Different languages conjure up different images and some languages have words for things that others do not. The variety of idioms used also lead to a plethora of different angles at which a situation is approached. Language can govern your very method of thinking (for example, a key question in the childhood of a Western person is 'How was I made?', whereas it has been said that an Eastern child would be more likely to ask 'How did I grow?', which sets a very different landscape upon which to philosophise and place oneself in the world). Basically, the social norms you are used to, the language you use, the laws which you adhere to, the political history of your country and many, many more things influence you more than most people acknowledge in their everyday life. What are your thoughts on culture, as a whole? Do you think it is always important or do you think we underestimate its toxic nature? Are there any cultural norms that baffle you (be that in your own culture, or in another culture)? Bit of a rambling OP, so apologies, but just wondering people's thoughts on the matter.

Hey! I remember that. How was your subscription? I got out of the loop of reading it. I've got like 8 by my bed unopened and then my subscription ran out. If I could afford it I'd make the same thread again but with New Scientist magazine, but it's weekly and expensive so I can't afford to get it until I'm a rich person, which may well be never.

    I prefer Braddick.
  11. Username - Last name of the lead character of The Graduate, something I originally adopted on Messageboards when I was a student who was disillusioned with everything, as Benjamin Braddock was. When I dropped out of uni I kept it ironically since I never managed to become 'The Graduate' myself. Avatar - Adopted when I got into running and is from Marathon Man. Dustin Hoffman played the lead character again (as he does in The Graduate) so I figured it'd be worth having the username and avatar linking, however tenuously. Signature - Pure bragging. Helpful as I only post here on occasion so it helps those who have joined since I left understand that I once posted a few things on this board that people felt were worthwhile. Also a link to a Boards Of Canada piece.

  13. Thanks man. Unfortunately recording didn't go as planned as we had some issues but song-writing went quite well. We have some more stuff, just hope we can record at some point soon. We are now thinking of a band name made from a Fall lyric or song title. For a while we toyed with Solar Ropes, after the Atlas Sound song. A bit too close to Solar Bears though, another band. Yeah, we are trying to branch out more. We all have about a million ideas. We want a trippy album, a folk album, and electronic album, an ambient album, a choral album, a garage album. Anything and everything. Next aim is to play a live gig. Get that done this year, hopefully by end of Summer. I like that stuff! No Muy Intenso would be great with some poetry over the top.
  14. Too many political things in my country.
  15. I see I killed this thread with my last post so I'll try again haha. So my parents are going on holiday for a week and my band have the house to ourselves. We are going to try and get some proper recordings. We've each got diverse sounds, from Radiohead/Nick Drake/Atlas Sound (https://soundcloud.com/mrwrenn/sirendur-haarts https://soundcloud.com/mrwrenn/jooneyer) to Pixies/Giant Drag (https://soundcloud.com/millymildish/sacramento https://soundcloud.com/millymildish/jstar) Those are a few early cuts of some of the songs we'll be working with. We've got about 15 to play with but these are the most recent. Hopefully I'll be able to put up some updated recordings of them in a couple of weeks time. Anyone fancy naming our band, too? Oh aye, we did a cover of a Neil Young song too:
  16. Lonerism has grown on me but it's still 2 or 3 good songs from being a very good album. I only really listen to 4 or 5 tracks of it, not like the EP or first album.
  17. Not overly impressed with new album but I'm happy they are doing what they want to do and not sacrificing for hits, especially considering they tend to be just the right side of cheesy on their singles and it'd be so easy for them to tip over the edge and undo a lot of good almost cheesy work with a weak album trying too hard.
  18. Can we do another one of these? I'm in the mood.
  19. Thread too complicated to make without being a million pages long. Now more annoyed.
  20. I'm gonna make a thread about what is annoying me today, but I'm pleased one of my threads is still going without me bumping it. My memory lives on on here...
  21. Still got rid of mine anyway.
  22. It is not insensitive to discuss gun control now, before anybody says it is.
  23. Good thread by the way.
