If anybody is interested in any reading material on these kind of issues I recommend (from my limited knowledge on the subject) Laurie Penny's book Meat Market: Female Flesh Under Capitalism.

I remembered last night about the first ever mixtape I was given. It was from my sister back when I was in primary school, around 1997-98 (so i'd have been nine or ten). It was awesome. Full of stuff I had never heard before and since my sister was a goth, full of stuff I wouldn't have had access to normally at that age. Marilyn Manson, Coal Chamber, Sepultura, System of a Down. Then stuff I still like today like Radiohead, Nirvana, Deftones. I was a little blonde pacifist wandering around the playground with this stuff on full blast. What was on your first playlist?

And this is part of what's wrong with these things. People just love watching it. It's entertainment, not news. So much misinformation flying around, so many conspiracy theories. I'd rather wake up and it all be sorted and we know what's happened. I don't think it's normal for our human psyche to be following such brutal atrocities as though it's a sports match. Happens to all of us but you kicking yourself if you'd missed this is part of the reason that the news is so fucking poor. Concentrating on being the first to break news, rather than the news outlet who present only the facts or can properly utilise those facts to make a profound statement, placed in a broader picture. If you're guaranteeing to be first to break the news, you're doing the news wrong. I hope you never become a journalist.
