Chris Martin Arrested On Assault Charge!
Canaries' star Chris Martin due in court on assault charge Chris Martin Norwich City star Chris Martin is facing a charge of common assault after he was arrested over the weekend. The Canaries striker was arrested in Wymondham in the early hours of Sunday morning, taken into custody and charged, and is due to appear in court next month. Police have released few details about what is alleged to have happened, but a Norfolk police spokesman said: “Following an incident in Wymondham in the early hours of Sunday morning, a 21-year-old man from the Beccles area has been charged with common assault. He will appear before Swaffham Magistrates Court on Tuesday, September 14.” Norwich City posted a statement on their website which said: “NCFC have been made aware that Chris Martin was arrested, and subsequently charged, with common assault in the early hours of Sunday morning. “It would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage, and the matter is now in the hands of Chris's solicitors.” Martin's court date will be on the same day Norwich City have an evening kick off away at Doncaster Rovers. The 21-year-old striker netted 23 goals for the Canaries last season, finishing second top scorer behind Grant Holt. He burst onto the scene in 2007 when he netted five goals, including an extra time winner in the FA Cup fourth round clash with Blackpool. There were rumours that Manchester United were interested in the Beccles-born striker, but he fell out of favour at Carrow Road under boss Glenn Roeder. He was farmed out on loan to League Two side Luton Town along with fellow Carrow Road youngster Michael Spillane, with Roeder dubbing the pair Tweedledum and Tweedledee. However, Martin did well at Luton, finding the net 11 times in the league and scoring in his team's Wembley victory in the final of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, although he could not save the Bedfordshire club from relegation out of the league. Back at Carrow Road, he forged a successful partnership with Holt and Wes Hoolahan in last season's League One winning Canaries side. He has yet to score in the Championship this season but twice hit the woodwork in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest, the day before his arrest, and grabbed a brace against Gillingham in the Carling Cup.
