Getting melodramatic here (I blame sleep deprivation): I wish I could write songs that are as comforting to Chris as his music is to me.

I think they really were trying hard this past year. The Golden Globes come to mind, which is something they'd never have done before. I thought it meant they felt more confident about their marriage, but maybe it was more of a final straw, trying to change their strategies.

This sucks. Never saw it coming and still can't believe it. The album also gets a completely different context this way.

I teared up, such sad news. I hope the press lays off a bit (wishful thinking). My god, calling an album with mainly love songs Ghost Stories... It makes sense now, too much sense. It's heartbreaking.

Have to post this here: I'm satisfied with this explanation. So both theories apply: a combination of promotion via NBC and Chris wanting to help people, eventually. Glad to hear he's still the same person and did struggle with his decision.

I agree with Céline, but I'm still not convinced this is promotion. To me that makes no sense at all. Chris appearing on The Voice doesn't have much to do with Coldplay's music, especially considering the way they'd normally promote or the way they dropped Magic and Midnight out of nowhere. The most probable reason I can think of it is he wants to do it for himself. Maybe he and Gwyneth need to finance that house they bought. I'm a bit concerned Chris will make a fool out of himself by being too kind as well, but on the other hand I've read artists he worked with calling him brutally honest, so there's hope. Macky if you are right about this being an opportunity to perform there - I'm still not behind it but at least that makes a little more sense. If that's the case, I'd say there are far easier ways for them to get some TV time though. Also, I'm sorry you're annoyed but we're on a fansite here, where people obsess about small things. Blowing things out of proportion is basically the purpose of this forum. Besides, I don't think there's a bad vibe, we're just having a discussion. The more varied the opinions, the better.

Now we've only heard one third of the songs instead of almost half. Sounds a lot better. But yeah, not sure about this whole Target thing. I don't like that they're attaching songs to a store. Profit should not become between their music and their listeners. And I hate to say it, but it doesn't seem like something Coldplay would do. (But that was before their singer sold himself to a talent show... OK enough ranting.)

You're describing the way I felt during MX, so even though I don't feel that way now, I can relate to your post. It feels a bit like a friend who does something that makes you doubt if you know them at all. All I can say is, if this is not your album (but don't decide until you've heard it), just remember that it's only one album and in a few years it won't matter. MX taught me I can't control them and it's not up to me to decide the way they should sound. It helped me take some distance and appreciate them for what they are instead of what I want them to be. I hope this album can mean something similar to you, if it turns out you don't like it. These feelings also show that they're exploring different territories and in the end, that's a great thing for a band.

Of course he has the right to do whatever he wants, whether he's been good to his fans or not. I don't think he's asking anyone to support his every move. We all respect Chris and personally I adore him. I just think this is not such a great move. I get that it's annoying to read these negative comments all the time. I'll stop now. My next comment is going to be positive.

That's the thing though, they really don't. I do understand that they'd want to, but I don't see the connection between a seemingly low-key album and a popularity contest. Agreed, although most candidates are good singers, so there's some talent. But this is not about writing songs. Maybe Chris just wants to talk to these people, show them what to do after the show is over (because most of them don't get a career out of this). I see where you're coming from, but this won't be the first time he got asked for something like this. And I'm sure he's strong enough to say no. Yeah that's also a bit weird. Didn't he once say he doesn't do shows like this because he wouldn't be able to do a proper audition himself?
