No "Ghost Stories" song?
Oh good point! Interesting. Or should I say, ghostly...

Rate "Magic" and post your review/comments (New Poll - Magic music vid)
After Midnight I was hoping for another interesting song, but Magic sounds very average to me, not to say cliché. Exactly. Coldplay are intelligent men, experienced musicians, inspired by literally all sorts of music. So why on earth would they not be able to write something we don't already hear on radio 95% of the time? The only explanation I can think of is they don't want to, which I can respect. You could call that a statement. Maybe they want to break with a moody image. Still, to me the lyrics seem lame. I just can't take them seriously. Someone said maybe Chris wrote this for his children, I thought of that as well. It's a song kids could sing when they fall in love for the first time. (This is not a compliment.) Chris does sound happy and kind of jokingly flirty, which suits the song. (This is probably a compliment.) What I am content with is that it doesn't sound like a stadium hit that demands a singalong. It's light and relatively subtle. I'll give it 6/10 because of that and the guitar parts. Jonny Buckland saves the day. I'm also glad Midnight is on the album. Ghost Stories will probably have a few different shades. PS. I know many people are annoyed with negative comments and I know some will be influenced by them, but it wouldn't be an interesting discussion if we all agreed on everything. Please don't let posts like this one ruin your experience of the song.

^I haven't heard that before. In what way do you mean?

Midnight
I love it. I'm relieved they can and want to do something different than singalong songs with a climax towards the end. An unpredictable Coldplay is far more interesting to me. I hope Magic continues along this road although I'm not getting my hopes up. I think the harmonizer effect is beautiful. It's easy enough to recognise Chris' voice and it grabbed me instantly.

Secret Santa 2013
Last week I got two lovely Secret Santa cards from Brenda who lives in Los Angeles. Thank you very much! I don't mind that they're a bit late. I hope you had great holidays and wish you all the best for 2014.

Secret Santa 2013
I haven't gotten anything from my Santa either, but I got a 'thank you card' (big understatement) from my match Milfeulle30 last week which was just as good. It included a letter, some delicious milk candies and this: A handsewn Viva jacket keychain that she made. I can't believe anyone would put that much effort in a thank you. Thank you for the thank you Leslie! :) So I don't feel ignored and am not in need of an extra Santa. It will be even more special next year if I do get something.

cobalt has some coldplay musings that hopefully provide interesting discussion
I agree that the idea of Princess of China (a glossy duet between a pop band and a pop star) is worse than the song itself. I think many people decided they wouldn't like it before they'd even heard it. Me included. The song is not so bad. It's kind of catchy and their voices go well together. I enjoy the acoustic version. It's ambient, curious and light instead of heavily synthezised, which makes me wonder what would have happened if they picked that to go on the album instead. I did think it was a low point in the setlist, the band playing along with a taped Rihanna. Never again. ETIAW never did anything for me and I disliked it as a closer. It felt like a forced Viva la Vida, a call for people standing up and fighting together, but without any sort of frustration that's crucial to get them to do that. I just never felt it.

Oh I am so happy it made it in time! I'm sorry about the chocolate, didn't really think that through. But the rest looks OK. I love doing this, sending random gifts across the globe. Thanks for your great post. This whole thread is great by the way.

Amazing to read so many great reviews on this board after two years of relative silence. Makes me smile. And so does Atlas.

I feel like it's all their albums coming together. Which would also explain why it sounds a bit predictable.

Gwyneth Paltrow and her crackpot diet may be laughable – but it's pure genius
I felt like posting because I have health problems and what I eat directly affects the way I feel, so I've done a lot of research on food. I feel best and most energized when I eat lots of fruit & veg, lean meat, not too many carbs (at night), not too much saturated fat, no added sugar and no additives. Looks like Gwyneth's on a diet like that, and as far as I'm concerned it's healthy and well-balanced. Not 'crackpot' at all. Definitely a lot better than what the majority of people eat. I get that you want to write about what you hate. Feels good. It's why we gossip and stuff. Everyone does it. People seem to have a problem with her telling others what (not) to eat. I don't think she does, though. She just wants to show some options: if you want to eat like this, you can try that and that and that. Like Céline said. Plus, you don't have to buy her book and if you do, you don't need to eat like that 24/7. Of course, she makes money with it and therefore it's a smart business move, but I believe she wants to help people too. Call me ignorant. I'd rather be ignorant than someone who thinks the worst of people they don't actually know at all. The one thing I have a problem with is, it's very easy to get lost in being healthy. Her diet seems 'clean'. No factory stuff. I like that, but it can become an obsession. There's nothing wrong with eating at McDonald's every once and a while. I hope she realizes that. The most important thing is to enjoy food and to listen to your body. If you hate tofu, don't eat tofu. If you crave chocolate, have chocolate. What I can't stand is people calling her crazy. What could possibly be crazy about a person who makes conscious decisions about what they eat, instead of just eating whatever's within reach? And in the meantime she works out A LOT, she flies all over the world, she looks fantastic, her husband is able to move around like a mad man on stage. No one can convince me she's on a bad diet. On the other hand - Keith Richards is still alive...
