Showers and Growers: An Album Analogy
Coldplay albums are both showers and growers, though they seem to be veering more toward the growers category with each new album. At face value, X&Y is all shower with all its big, expansive sounds and riffs. I didn't like the that part of it and felt disappointed. But then I remembered my (less strong) reaction towards AROBTTH immediately after Parachutes and put X&Y through more listens... It is definitely a grower. The shower part seems like a facade now, put on to wow the critics (though some saw through and have lambasted the album) and con all us music fans into buying the CD. Makes any sense?

^ Agreed :D For the non-fans, this'll definitely be an eye-opener. Just don't know whether they can quell the dissent among us fans or not

Coldplay X &Y Review in Rolling Stone
One thing about that article's true though... "maybe 50 Cent made off with a little bit of his style and grace".   'Tis true, nothing sounds easy on this album (unlike the previous 2 albums) - I do feel a little sad about that.

The New "Talk" is freaking Amazing
- What do Yall think of the bonus Japanese track?
Really? How come? I thought it's one of their most accessible songs currently... Though I must admit is sounds very familiar, kinda like a mishmash of a million songs from a kazillion places (exaggerating of course  )... The Beatles (John Lennon?), Bond (& other epic sci-fi film) soundtracks... Definitely heard the huge sound and the way the piano is used before. Still I like it, and think it's good- Murder - Studio version
^ Sent to you guys (again) :D It's in mp3 format... hope y'all like it- Has Chris Martin lost his ability to write good lyrics?
^ Haha, totally!- Why I Believe X & Y Is Receiving Mixed Reactions:
I just realised... I miss their piano. Now that I can actually say for sure that I'm starting to like the album, I notice the parts I like all have piano in them... It makes the music more heartfelt & tender --> less 'mechanical' & cold- How many hours a day do you listen to music?
^ Good answer. I'd say the same too- Has Chris Martin lost his ability to write good lyrics?
Haha, I'm gonna try to be a bit controversial here- "Lost his ability to write good lyrics"? What ability? I didn't even know he had that ability... Wasn't apparent in Parachutes, neither was it on AROBTTH, so of course not on this album :o :D Neways, I love bands for their music, the lyrics are just part of it... so they're never a factor at all. They could be just yapping rubbish and woohooing throughout the album for all I care (which btw, I think would be a great concept for an album) In general, Coldplay lyrics tend to complement the emotion the songs are meant to convey rather than the other way round. That's why Chris has so many alternate lyrics to the songs. But seriously, listen closely to the lyrics of X&Y... Although there are repeat topics / phrases e.g. outer space, loud noises, and other non-sense... These words are the ones that stand out coz we've all heard them before. Many of the more meaningful (and good lyrics) are cocooned in the loud songs where Chris' singing is not so clear so it's harder to hear...- Your Impressions of X&Y After Hearing it all, Finally
Oops sorry, double posted. *Red faced* :embarrased: Darn server was down, didn't know whether it got sent or not- Your Impressions of X&Y After Hearing it all, Finally
It's coming! It's growing! It's coming! It's growing! Yes! Coldplay are back in me, I'm back in heaven. Deep night here, Swallowed In The Sea is going, couldn't stop smiling. Hell fuck yeah, I was waiting for that moment for days. Rationally I wasn't sure this could happen again with that third album, but now it happened!! I fell in love again, that's super!!! Me too, me too!!! I haven't felt it for so long and it took such a long while in coming that I forgot what it is to fall in love with their music again... Just can't help smiling right now :D This is the reason why I love Coldplay. They make you feel, remind you that you are alive, that life is for living, and are there with you every step of the way, everytime. For all you people out there who find X&Y a hard listen (& not quite to your taste) but are still trying to accept it, my advice: keep it on repeat until you get used to the instruments & sound. This one really takes time. Once your brain accepts what it's hearing and you can start processing the sound without feeling overwhelmed, you'll start to love it, promise! It's still our dear old Coldplay :smug: Not sure yet though whether I can fall asleep / totally relax to it like I did Parachutes and even AROBTTH :P- Your Impressions of X&Y After Hearing it all, Finally
Anyone feel like I feel? The impact of the whole album has left me all in a daze (of course my current disturbed state of mind isn't helping much)... I'm confused. I can't decide whether I like it or not. :o Is it possible that the album both blew my socks off and left me feeling totally disappointed at the same time??? I mean they have grown so much and improved and all that... but as I've said before (and still feel), they seem to have lost track of/interest in what I think is one of their main qualities - emotional accessibility - the intimacy of their music. I'm not asking for a whole album full of that (a la Parachutes), but one or two songs in that vein (simple, unadorned) would be nice... In fact, I would argue this is what the album lacks & is the source polarising us fans into those who think this album is absolutely MEGA and those who feel Coldplay have lost it.- The Japan Bonus Track
^ Sending over now... Enjoy :)- The pledge I am making and I think others should join.
That was exactly the point I was trying to make (in not so many words)... Talking about legality, it's only become illegal coz the record companies have been pushing for it  I'll stick my neck out here and say that I think the band wouldn't mind fans d'loading the music before buying their CD- The Japan Bonus Track
or "Things I Dont Understand" :) TIDU wouldn've been *heaven* on the album...but people are already complaining that X&Y is too loud and How You See The World is more relaxed. I can't help but imagine how many other amazing songs were shelved. B-sides should have at least 5 tracks! lol ^ Agreed! about the 5 tracks for B-sides... Thanks for the rapidshare link (& wiReZ for teaching us how to get WinRAR and the passwords) :D- What do Yall think of the bonus Japanese track?
Another link from another thread on rapidshare http://rapidshare.de/files/2091316/Japan_Report.rar.html Needs Winrar to open: http://www.rarsoft.com the password's cp.com Just passing on nice info around :D- Why I Believe X & Y Is Receiving Mixed Reactions:
Miggy... That post was 'super-human'. ^ I agree with antshar, that's the best post I've read for ages! I keep feeling torn though between wanting them to change direction (and wanting an even better Parachutes)... Guess Parachutes won't happen again until a kazillion albums later (if it ever does), they probably think they've finished exploring that aspect of their music... But in future I think, who knows? I think a return to Parachutes (in a more mature form) might be possible if our boys are so inclined to... It's a long time away though, and will be long after they're done growing musically as a band - Murder - Studio version
^ Sent to u guys... Enjoy :D- Poor Reception of X&Y outside of this Forum
It's not a matter of change, (ROBITH was different from Parachutes and I love them both) it's a fact. In the previous albums, the bass lines, the guitar lines, the drum lines, the piano lines were outstanding and geniuses. In X&Y all is simplified and banalized, that's it. SIMPLIFIED?!! :o Of all the things being said to describe X&Y, this is one word I did not expect to see... Banal? a little. Overproduced? maybe. Lacking soul? possibly. But not simplified. I would say this is the most complex album they've ever produced (and more complex than a lot of stuff out there)... Whether this complexity translates to anything meaningful or not of course is another matter altogether. At first listen, X&Y sounds flat... But so did AROBTTH (compared to Parachutes) when I first heard it. Still can't say that AROBTTH is easy to listen to, but I do appreciate it much better now. Critics have said that X&Y opens up to more listens. Maybe that's what we all need to do? Give the album more time (& more listens)... There is a whole lot more going on in there than is apparent :D One thing's for sure, I think they have become more of a world band (though the original lot of us fans probably come from the Britpop movement)... Maybe some of us need to get used to their new styles too? I seem to notice a lot of repetitive (though complex) drumming... Euro-style electronica anyone? :P- The pledge I am making and I think others should join.
What's the difference between buying it first (and then making copies eg on iPod) or d'loading it first (and then going out to buy the album - probably on the first day of release - as most of us mean to do anyway)?- The New "Talk" is freaking Amazing
Nah... What I meant earlier wasn't that I wanted another Parachutes (that would've disappointed me)... What I meant was songs that perhaps had a nod towards Parachutes, as in having a sparser sound... Although it's been commented in one of the reviews that X&Y is sparse-sounding, Parachutes is simpler by far... I guess we all just miss that intimate sound :/- The Jeff Buckley appreciation thread (November 17, 1966 - May 29th , 1997)
To Mr Buckley... Hallelujah- Where's the bling?
I know... I live for it too, but only so I have enough to donate to all you good people around who post stuff for us all! I'm so sad, now I won't be able to send bling anymore *sniff* - What do Yall think of the bonus Japanese track?
