Yea, I think most of the critical articles do have their points, though it mostly goes to show how much they (the critics) have misunderstood Coldplay and the music they have made.
X&Y is (like the band themselves have said) about contrasts, one of which is the band going back and forth with their insecurities & world-beating confidence at the same time. Sonically, it's a very strange & unsettling experience for listeners, one which I can't say I readily like...
About Peedston's agreement with the criticism that the album being faultless to a fault does not sit well with Coldplay's hearts-on-their-sleeve music, it is an observation that I agree with, though I think we may have to consider it in light of the album being called X&Y: the band doing a 180 degree turn in consciously trying to shed their vulnerabilities
