  3. Concert Review: Coldplay delivers a hot show at the Palace By GARY GRAFF For Journal Register Newspapers [email protected]; Twitter: @graffonmusic AUBURN HILLS -- When a band lets the confetti fly during the second song of its concert, you know it has a great deal of confidence in the rest of the show. And if the group in question is Coldplay, why shouldn't it? The British quartet, touring in support of its platinum 2011 release "Mylo Xyloto," welcomed August with a another of its whiz-bang spectacles Wednesday night at the Palace. A couple of confetti storms were only part of a colorful and energetic hour and 40 minutes that also included lasers, projections onto five circular video screens -- four of which hovered above the crowd of 17,000 -- giant balloons that fans batted around during "Lovers in Japan" and a special stage situated in the rear corner of the Palace's lower deck, where Coldplay played a pair of songs ("Us Against the World" and "Speed of Sound") and also sang a belated "Happy Birthday" to drummer Will Champion, who turned 34 on Tuesday, July 31. The night's most inventive effect, meanwhile, was light-up wristbands given to each attendee that were triggered by Coldplay's crew to turn the arena into a twinkling, truly 360-degree effect during five of the show's 21 songs (although it should be noted that some of the wristbands stayed on throughout the show, while others -- like, ahem, this reviewer's -- did not work at all). Coldplay's musical integrity did not suffer for all that pizzazz, either. The group's melodic but muscular brand of anthem rock plays well in large spaces, and that was certainly the case at the Palace despite a blaring mix that periodically subsumed hyperkinetic frontman Chris Martin's vocals and some of the instrumental nuances. The group, not surprisingly, dipped generously into "Mylo Xyloto," opening with the title track and "Hurts Like Heaven" and delivering eight of the set's other 13 songs, with Rihanna performing her part on "Princes of China" via video and the crowd singing the end of "Paradise" with Martin conducting. Coldplay also mined its abundance of hits on Wednesday, rolling through quieter favorites such as "In My Place," "Yellow," "The Scientist" and "Fix You" along with propulsive fare like Viva La Vida," "Violet Hill," "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face" and "Clocks." And "Warning Sign," from 2002's "A Rush of Blood to the Head," was a welcome deep dip into the group's catalog. Martin thanked the crowd for coming out on a Wednesday night to see his band and promised "the best (expletive) concert you've ever been to in your life." That's a tall order, but most of the wristband-wearing legion at the Palace will probably consider Coldplay's show a contender for that distinction.
  4. http://popcrush.com/coldplay-hurts-like-heaven-single/ Coldplay Release ‘Hurts Like Heaven’ as Next Single by: Scott Shetler Yesterday Following the successful collabo with Rihanna, ‘Princess of China,’ Coldplay are issuing yet another single from their multi-platinum album ‘Mylo Xyloto.’ ‘Hurts Like Heaven’ — the track on which Chris Martin sings, “You use your heart as a weapon / And it hurts like Heaven” – will be the next Coldplay single to impact airwaves. ‘Heaven’ is one of the most complex tracks on ‘Mylo Xyloto,’ with intricately-layered backing vocals, pulsing keyboards, and rushing guitar melodies. Martin speeds up the pace of his delivery when he sings, “On every street, every car, every surface a name / Tonight the streets are ours / And we’re writing and saying / Don’t let them take control / No we won’t let them take control.” Martin also sings that he’s “armed with a spray can soul,” a line that could have inspired the album’s gritty, graffiti-style artwork. Coldplay have already scored three Top 20 pop hits from ‘Mylo Xyloto,’ with ‘Princess of China,’ ‘Every Teardrop is a Waterfall,’ and ‘Paradise.’ Their U.S. tour continues through Aug. 11 before they return to Europe.

Why you should go: It's hard to remember a time when Coldplay wasn't played on every radio station all the time, but when the band formed in 1996, no one had any inkling they would become such an enormous sensation. They released three EPs before their single "Yellow" came out in 2000. It was followed by their first full-length, "Parachutes," which was nominated for a Mercury Prize, and then 2002's "A Rush of Blood to the Head," which is widely considered Coldplay's greatest work.

  17. And it was all… yellow Posted by Esme Peach on 01 August 2012 Yellow is my mum’s fave Coldplay song. She tells me this every time I mention I’m on tour with Coldplay. So, in tribute to my mamacita, and because the song was playing on loop in my head throughout the tour, I thought we’d have a 24 hour Coldplay Yellow challenge on Twitter. My challenge was photographing and tweeting everything yellow I saw, especially food. And the challenge to all our Twitter followers was to do the same. A taste of my yellow photo diary is below or the full set is on Pinterest and also on Instagram (@oxfamontour) if you’re not already following us there. Rach now thinks I’ve gone insane with colour obsession. And I think she may have a point. I am still seeing every street I walk down through a hazy yellow lens and humming… Look at the stars Look how they shine for you And everything you do Yeah, they were all yellow… http://oxfamontour.org/coldplay/and-it-was-all-yellow/?show=slide What’s your ma’s fave Coldplay song? You never know, we may launch a Twitter challenge in her honour too… See yellow things and more from the tour on pinterest.com/oxfamontour Follow us on Twitter: @oxfamontour
  18. Lighting up the Night Guest blog by Kristi York Wooten, an activist who volunteered with Oxfam at the Atlanta show on July 2nd. If you’ve been to a Coldplay gig recently, you experienced a feast of light and sound. You probably also received an LED wristband, which twinkled on your arm in time to “ ” and other songs during the band’s set. A lighting engineer controlled the multicolored flickers in the arena, and you got to take the bracelet home as a souvenir (or you recycled it at the venue). Pretty cool to look at, right? Yet, away from its radio controls, the light no longer works. Those lucky enough to be chatted up by a human vegetable or have their photo snapped for the GROW wall also left the Coldplay show with a keepsake … a new kernel of knowledge about global hunger and the importance of supporting sustainable farming. A few days have passed – that little Oxfam pamphlet’s been thrown away, and a pin that says “GROW” is sitting on your bureau next to that defunct armband. Now what? Let’s go back to the arena for a moment. What if everyone at the concert received the wristband … but only yours lit up? Would you feel self-conscious or empowered? What if you could light up the bracelet of the person next to you – or light your whole row, your whole section? What if you could light up every wrist in the whole arena? That’s what it means to be an activist – and for me, that’s what it felt like to talk to Coldplay fans about Oxfam’s work in Atlanta on July 2nd. Oxfam volunteers signed up nearly 600 people at Philips Arena. That’s enough to make a sparkle in a room of 17,000 people. One thing that makes Coldplay such a great mouthpiece is that the guys are genuinely committed to taking care of our world and its inhabitants – and spreading the word about poverty-fighting organizations like Oxfam. They’re rock stars, which means they have political gumption and strong voices that ring out across the world. But they can’t light up the night on their own. That’s why they gave you the wristband. And that’s why they brought Oxfam on tour. So before you toss that bracelet in the recycle bin, imagine that you can turn it on without the radio waves and the techie at the arena. And that little bit you learned about Oxfam – don’t be shy to share it on your blog, your Facebook, Twitter, etc. Wear your little green pin with pride. It’s our turn to keep the spark going. As Chris Martin sings in “Charlie Brown,” “so we’ll soar, luminous and wired. We’ll all be glowing in the dark.” Have you blogged about GROW or Oxfam on Tour? Share it with us in the comments and we’ll tweet it to the world. Check us out on Pinterest: pinterest.com/oxfamontour and Instagram: @oxfamontour

  22. Roadie #42 - Blog #179 2 August 2012 10:12 pm #42 gives us the world premiere of Graham Against The World We head out to Boston spread across a couple of smaller planes. It would seem that there’s been some storm damage to the regular ride, so this is the best way forward. It’s impossible to sit on the tarmac looking at the similarly nippy looking plane opposite us out of the window and not think one thing: “Let’s race ‘em”. Plainly this isn’t going to happen - and the other plane contains the band, so us getting there before them is not on the cards. Trainer Dan, though, still suggests a whip round to offer the pilot some cash in exchange for “putting the hammer down”. Can’t say it isn’t tempting… Boston sees more sound-checking and general fiddling. As well as a slight brush-up on God Put A Smile, they head off to the C-Stage to have a look at Us Against The World. The planned change is microscopically subtle, but the version they end up playing turns into a gag tune. I’ve talked before about how from time to time they’ll launch into a tune in soundcheck and Chris will make up lyrics on the spot to make a tribute song to one of the crew. Today is Lighting Director Graham Feast’s turn. The lyrical re-write is extreme in its minimalism, but it’s wonderful nonetheless. As ever, Mr Champion’s harmony vocal is utterly exemplary… [ame= ] [/ame] And so on for three and a half minutes… Soundchecking means longer days - we’re often in the venue merely for a few hours, but now we’re about for a little longer. We’re still part timers compared to the majority of the crew, but it’s a different experience nevertheless. I’m sat going through my flightcases just after doors and the first few hundred folks are finding their seats. They’re whooping and cheering and yelling “Coldplay!” from all over the cavernous empty arena. It’s gloriously bonkers. There’s almost nobody here and there’s still a good few hours until showtime. Bodes well for a good night though… I’m watching all this when DeeDee, who has been with the Band’s record label over here since way back comes wandering around with her adorable daughter picking up the previous night’s butterfly confetti. I comment that the crowd are pretty mad and she says she left the building last night to the sound of thousands of them doing the Viva chant all the way down the escalators and down onto the street. This reminded me of the first night in Montreal last week where they were Viva-chanting a good ten minutes after the band had left the stage (and in Guy’s case - left the building, if I remember correctly). Maybe I’ll wander out through the crowd one night and see if this is a common thing… A definite regular occurrence is the home-made outfits. Trainer Dan pops over during the changeover before the show claiming to have found a couple that definitely need to be photographed. They both have clothes in the full Mylo Graffitti style, but the fella has something slightly more permanent going on in the form of tattoos of the lyrics to Everything’s Not Lost and also Will’s Viva logo. Wowzers! The B-stage gets a shuffle on Boston night two, with the re-appearance of Green Eyes for the first time in ages. The C-stage also gets a new addition in Detroit, but not with the Graham-tinged re-write of Us Against The World. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aSC4LT_Uyg]Happy birthday Will - YouTube[/ame] Yep, instead, it’s a Birthday mention for Mr. Champion and Detroit were in fine voice to assist with the celebration.
