  7. Coldplay Single Preview: Read About 'Violet Hill' Here Before You Download It On Tuesday! Track transitions from stomping guitar chords to hushed vocals, indicating the rest of the album's atmospheric sound. By the time Tuesday morning (April 29) rolls around, you're going to know what we're talking about. That's when Coldplay will post "Violet Hill" — the first single from their upcoming Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends album — on their official Web site for free download. (It's scheduled to happen at exactly 7:15 a.m. ET, FYI.) The move is rare for a band of such stature, not to mention a band of such major-label-tude. And while we applaud such forward thinking, we're also figuring that most Coldplay fans don't want to wait until Tuesday morning to climb "Violet Hill," so we're going to give you a preview right now. And no, we haven't swung some sort of streaming deal with Capitol Records. Rather, this is a written preview of the track, which MTV News was lucky enough to hear last week — along with the rest of Viva — at the EMI headquarters here in New York. We're not allowed to write about the entire album just yet (suffice to say security is tight on this one), but we figured the time was right to dish some details about "Hill." And while we realize that reading about a song doesn't compare to actually hearing it, what else are you gonna do for the next 15-odd hours? "Violet Hill" opens with the barely there bubbles of synthesizer-and-guitar fuzz, a quiet clamor that starts off down a dark hallway, then slowly fills the open space, building into a wall of gauzy, all-encompassing white noise (that's a common theme on Viva) that grows to massive — yet minimal — proportions (that's another theme) before being punctured by frontman Chris Martin's winsome falsetto recalling "a long and dark December/ From the rooftops I remember there was snow." From there, the song suddenly shifts from spacey to stomping, thanks to some muscular guitar and piano chords. It's a startling change — and a powerful pounding — that recalls both the opening moments of "Politik" (from 2002's A Rush of Blood to the Head) and some of Queen's more theatrically garish moments. That momentum builds and builds until guitarist Jonny Buckland throws in a curling solo that coasts into a smoother, sexier and, dare we say, Maroon 5-esque midsection, complete with Martin crooning "If you loved me/ Why'd you let me go?" The breakneck shifts don't stop there, as the band pick things back up — more of that pounding again — before the entire wall of noise falls away, and all we're left with is Martin and his piano, his voice hushed and breathy, as he pleads once more to his (presumably absent) lover, "If you love me/ Won't you let me know." (Cue those tabloid rumors!) Then the song comes to an end, as quietly as it began. Again, we're not allowed to write much about Viva la Vida yet, but we can tell you that if you like "Violet Hill," well, then you're gonna love the album. If you hate it, well, you'll still probably love the album. "Hill" is strongly indicative of the breadth of song structures you'll hear on the Brian Eno-produced album, and at the same time, it's unlike anything else on the album, which is a decidedly atmospheric (yet organic) affair. Confused? You ain't heard nothin' yet. http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1586412/20080428/coldplay.jhtml
  8. I got the email coldplay.com sent out too.I guess we now know that the album title is "viva la vida or death and all his friends" since it was in the email they sent out!!I cant wait for Violet Hill an this album!!
  9. man im gettin so impatient!I think this is the most ive been, probably because i know ill hear it in a couple days!I need to step away from this computer for a while!!
  10. i think it might be manchester cause i was listening to it online yesterday and they had a little promo commerical saying they were gonna play Violet Hill.
  11. Is anyone going to be standing by to record this on monday just incase they do play it on monday??
  12. didnt someone say that Violet Hill was going to be played monday in mexico??
  13. I wonder(but im pretty sure it does)if it puts them in a bad mood at that point and time.Knowing how much Chris hates the paparazzi im sure it can put a damper on the mood.
  14. Yea i hope we hear this song somewhere.I really wanted to hear that brass band they used for the third verse of the song.I love the title too!
  15. At least we get to hear something new soon!!3 weeks is a lot closer than June 16th when the whole album comes out.I think this will hold us over til then.I think a lot of people will be playin Violet Hill over and over again when it comes out!!I know i will!
  16. Yea i think unlike many bands one thing that i think they want to make sure is that they evolve their sound on each album.A lot of bands make the same music on every album which isnt a bad thing. But its nice to see a band evolve their sound over albums. You can really see it with Coldplays albums.By the sounds of Violet Hill an other tracks it seems that we will hear them at their peek of exploration and their sound growing even more.
  17. Im not sure about the Black and White videos this time around, seeing as they put a lot of colors into this album as they said.I expect a lot of colors in their vids this time around.
  18. So they said they might release a track or two before the album is released.Im thinking that if they only release one track before the album then wont that be the official first single that is always released before the album?Cause we are hearing a lot about Violet Hill being the first single and them shooting a video for it.But a May 6th release date is pretty far from June 16th. Wasnt speed of sound released a couple weeks before X&Y came out?So that leaves time maybe for another track to be released before the album maybe??
  19. Man that cathedral is massive and looks beautiful!!It said they filmed a videoclip there??
  20. I was just watching the Live Is For Living performance from the Live 2003 Dvd and got a thought. You think that maybe we could see the track re-appear in the set list this upcoming tour? With the whole Life and Death theme with the new album seems pretty fitting. But its probably most likely not to happen but just a thought.
  21. yea its been acting weird for me too lately, but i am still able to access it.Just sometimes it takes a couple tries.
  22. Funny how they always rely on coldplay.
  23. i guess they dont have the song on the website. They do have a few intrumental tracks from the movies.they gave coldplay credit for composing. So did they help on all the tracks or just the escapist track that we havent heard yet?
