I finally heard "Fun" and am rather upset with Chris for giving it away... just like I was with "Gravity". But at least with "Gravity", we finally got a Coldplay studio version of the song, and at least we'd had that live version floating around for ages before that. "Fun" is such a beautiful song. Natalie does a great job with it - but I'd still prefer to hear the Coldplay version instead.

Could it be a new live DVD?

When I heard it, it made me even more excited, and trust me, I was pretty excited during the game already. Always great to hear Coldplay unexpectedly.

I respect Thom Yorke and Radiohead in general (after all, I don't think we'd have Coldplay without Radiohead) but I much prefer Chris's attitude towards other artists and bands (respectful, humble, etc.) over Thom Yorke's elitist attitude. It's not a Coldplay vs. Radiohead thing for me (they've become so different over the years that I don't see the point in comparing them anymore, if ever). It's just that I prefer artists who are supportive of one another over those who act like they're better than others (*cough* Gallagher brothers *cough*).

I understand why some people don't like X&Y, but I loved it when it came out and still love it now. It's got some great songs. Yeah, it's more produced than VLV, but I don't think we would have VLV without the band having gone through their X&Y phase. I like to think of X&Y as a musical phase that Coldplay went through - dealing with the huge expectations on their shoulders, the "big band" sound, learning how to keep the Coldplay sound but not be restricted by those expectations, etc. - that brought us the band's fantastic new direction on VLV - and when I think of X&Y that way, how could I possibly not love it? :D

I'm trying to think the same thing, *Sarah*, but I have to admit that I can't help but worry that Fran's going to like being on his own too much to want to go back to being the frontman for Travis.

Other than London, which I'm sure is hands down the best place to see Coldplay given it's the hometown crowd, I'd say Toronto! In addition to what everyone else has mentioned above about how the band loves playing in Toronto (the 2006 live "DVD" and all), having seen Coldplay in some other Canadian cities, I have to say that the other Canadian cities where I've seen Coldplay don't have the energy that a Toronto show does. I can still remember the multiple encores in 2003... what a night. :D

Is anyone else kind of sad that Fran's taking a break from Travis to work on a solo album? A part of me can't help but be scared that this is the beginning of the end for Travis...

Muse, because I was at one of their concerts last night. But I'm listening to Muse shuffled with Coldplay songs as well. :)

I wish I could find the original source of that tidbit (about Muse having used the balloons first) but the best I could do was a reference on the Muse forum (http://board.muse.mu/showthread.php?t=54848) - apparently Muse has been doing the balloons since 2001 and Coldplay since 2005. I've never been able to touch a confetti-filled balloon at a Coldplay concert despite having been to a good number of shows, but I finally got to touch one of the ones at the Muse concert last night! Wish I was smart enough to try to hit it with something sharp in order to burst it, but it was still fun to finally touch a confetti-filled...eyeball, lol.

In all fairness, I think Muse had balloons filled with confetti before Coldplay did - they've been doing it for years and years. Anyway, awesome show though! It was my first time seeing Muse live despite having been a fan for almost 7 years... but the wait was SO worth it! The energy in the ACC last night could only be rivalled by the energy at a Coldplay show!

There are some decent albums on that list (Keane, Oasis, Travis) but it's easy for me - Coldplay should win. :D

Agreed. The 2000's seem to be full of pretentious hipster-indie music and pure "entertainment pop" (with little to no substance) - and it's nice to have bands like Coldplay around who just want to make good music. So throw tomatoes all you want at me - I've got Viva La Vida as #1 on my list. ;)

I like a few Snow Patrol songs, but I wouldn't consider myself a fan since I can't listen to more than 2-3 of their songs in a row before getting bored. The problem with SP, in my humble opinion, is that many of their songs, particularly the ballads, sound very similar and it doesn't seem like the band is progressing or growing from album to album. Many argued that Coldplay was just recreating the same kind of sound from AROBTTH with X&Y (a criticism I disagree with to a large extent, but that's a whole different topic) - and this is the kind of criticism that I have for Snow Patrol's last album. SP seem to have found their radio-friendly mainstream ballad sound (I'm calling it the "Snow Patrol sound") from "Run" and "Chasing Cars" and now seem content replicating that sound over and over again. Maybe their next album will show a "Viva La Vida"-esque growth and development for the band (although I still don't think the band has the sheer musical talent that Coldplay has, that is necessary to take a big step forward), but until then, Snow Patrol doesn't come close to Coldplay. Coldplay has, through the last album, taken an important step forward in diversifying its sound, while Snow Patrol seems keen to replicate the "Snow Patrol sound" from song to song. Sorry to compare the two bands, but it's a lot easier to explain my thoughts about Snow Patrol using a band that everyone on this board is familiar with. :D

I think Showbiz was released in 1999, though.

I'm embarassed to say that I forgot that OOS was from this decade. Thanks for the reminder! I'll go edit it now. Though I don't actually agree that OOS is their best album, but to each their own. :)
