Big Brother's watching: The secret CCTV bunker that monitors our every move Last updated at 13:17pm on 1st June 2007 Comments (9) In a bunker beneath the bustling streets of central London, guards monitor a grid of closed-circuit television. The centre, at a secret location, is run by a private company in association with the police and local council. Polls show broad public acceptance, even if the cameras more often capture a couple in loving embrace than a terrorist about to wreak havoc. Scroll down for more... 'Cock' is a word that makes the RSPB twitchy By FIONA MACRAE - More by this author » Last updated at 22:08pm on 1st June 2007 Comments (12) Don't call me cock on the RSPB website Strutting proudly round the barnyard or twittering in the trees, he is king of the birds. But the cock is no longer welcome among the birdwatching fraternity, it seems. The word, which has been used to describe male birds for centuries, has been all but banned from the website run by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. The charity has decided to avoid the term wherever possible to spare the blushes of its more delicate subscribers. Fears that the word might ca…

Firefighters in Greater Manchester are facing disciplinary action over claims they slept on a station floor instead of their new reclining chairs. Three men, based in Bury, are being investigated for "involvement in the use of unauthorised rest facilities". It is claimed they broke regulations by using sleeping bags on the floor rather than the £400 chairs. The chairs were installed as part of modernisation programme to replace all beds in the region's 41 fire stations. The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) said the men were all asleep as a team of inspectors from the fire service carried out a spot check early one morning. "We have now christened them the furni…

An MP has predicted "red faces" after a policeman's private car was stolen during the day from Arundel police station in West Sussex. It follows a fire at the town's fire station in 2006. "The ambulance service nearby must be wondering what is going to happen to them," Nick Herbert said. On Thursday, the Arundel and South Downs MP told the BBC he would be asking about security at the station. Police said a man had been arrested and bailed after the theft on 22 May. A Sussex Police spokesman said the officer parked his car when he came on duty on 22 May, but it had gone when he went to go home. "We are looking at whether there was a break-in," he said. …

The python tried to swallow the alligator whole and then exploded An unusual clash between a 6-foot (1.8m) alligator and a 13-foot (3.9m) python has left two of the deadliest predators dead in Florida's swamps. The Burmese python tried to swallow its fearsome rival whole but then exploded. The remains of the two giant reptiles were found by astonished rangers in the Everglades National Park. The rangers say the find suggests that non-native Burmese pythons might even challenge alligators' leading position in the food chain in the swamps. The python's remains were found with the victim's tail protruding from its burst midsection. The head of the python was m…

Watson Wednesday, May 30, 2007 Adam Pearlman, the Jewish Mossad agent who once wrote stinging essays condemning Muslims as "bloodthirsty terrorists", has once again popped up as an "Al-Qaeda spokesman" to frighten the dwindling number of Americans who still believe Al-Qaeda exists outside of U.S. intelligence circles.
