The mobile phone that stops you being struck by lightning Alarm will sound when blue skies mask the danger of thunderbolts By ELEANOR MAYNE - More by this author » Last updated at 08:54am on 27th May 2007 Comments (3) Children have always been taught to work out how near they are to a dangerous electrical storm by counting the seconds between the thunder and the flash of lightning. Now there is a more modern solution to the summer hazard of lightning strikes - the mobile phone. Phone makers, not content with offering email, camera, video recorder and a host of other options on their high-tech handsets, have developed a phone which can alert the user …

The messages claim the fruit contains viruses similar to Sars, the severe respiratory illness which has killed hundreds of people worldwide. Producers in Hainan say the resulting price slump is costing them up to 20 million yuan ($US2.6m) a day. China's Agriculture Ministry has dismissed the Sars claim as baseless. Police are investigating its source. "It is utterly a rumour," a Chinese Health Ministry official was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency. "There has not been a case in the world in which human…

Arson probe as fire rips through historic Cutty Sark Police have launched an arson inquiry into the fire that ripped through the Cutty Sark today. The blaze reduced the 19th-century tea clipper to a charred wreck. But experts said they are confident the ship can be restored because many of its historic artefacts, including its figurehead, sails, masts, prow and coach-housing, had previously been removed. Scores of firefighters battled to save the ship as flames 100 feet high engulfed the hull at its dry dock in Greenwich after an explosion at about 4.45am. Police are analysing CCTV images, thought to show people in the area shortly before the fire s…

There have been complaints from universities about students being sold customised essays on the internet. The advert ban from the Google search engine has been "warmly welcomed" by university authorities. But it has angered essay writing firms which say this will unfairly punish legitimate businesses. Boeing has started final assembly of its first 787 Dreamliner jet. The plane is coming to life at Boeing's main US production facility near Seattle, Washington from parts first made as far away as Italy and Japan. Boeing now plans to carry out the first test flights in August before initial deliveries to airlines in May 2008. The medium-sized 787 is Boeing's first all-new commercial plane in more than 10 years, and has so far attracted 568 orders from 44 airlines. Its success - so far at least - is in marked contrast to the problems at European rival Airbus over its A380 superjumbo. The giant twin-deck A380 is now running two years late due to a major re…
