Newcastle have appointed former Bolton boss Sam Allardyce as their new manager on a three-year contract. The 52-year-old succeeds Glenn Roeder, who resigned on 6 May, at the helm of the St James' Park club. Allardyce, who turned down the Newcastle job once before, said: "It is fantastic from my point of view. "A couple of years ago there was an opportunity, which I declined, but now I feel like I'm ready to implement what I did at Bolton for seven years." Allardyce - who refused to answer questions from BBC reporters because of a Panorama programme broadcast last September - said his ambition was to "win a trophy or qualify for Europe over the next few year…

  2. The Football League is to change its rules about clubs entering administration after Leeds and Boston exploited a loophole. The two clubs timed going into administration to avoid starting next season with a 10-point penalty. But the League plans to implement a cut-off date, so any club entering administration after that point would be penalised the following season. The League have yet to decide what date the cut-off will be. In 2003 the League brought in a rule where they would penalise a club 10 points for entering administration in order to deter clubs from getting heavily in debt and then seeking a quick-fix solution. But Leeds and Boston were all-b…

There will be three more series of Emmy-winning TV show Lost before it finally ends in 2010. A "highly-anticipated and shocking finale" is being planned by TV network ABC, which acknowledged viewers may drift away unless the drama concludes. Each series will be 16 episodes with no mid-season break, following complaints the last series was divided in two. The desert-island programme, which stars Evangeline Lilly and Matthew Fox, follows the survivors of a plane crash. They are stranded in a mysterious location and must come to terms with the other inhabitants of the island as well as the isolation of their new home. 'Deserved' ending "Due to the u…

The 58-year-old has ended his tenure at Bramall Lane after seven-and-a-half years in charge of the Blades. "I believe that this is the right time for me to go," said Warnock. "I'm proud of what I have achieved at this club but the decision is best for everyone." Chairman Kevin McCabe added: "Neil has well and truly left his mark on the history of Sheffield United." Warnock said he was convinced the Blades were in a good position to bounce straight back after Sunday's 2-1 defeat at home to Wigan consigned them to the Ch…

In addition, Alex Jones of Prison Planet is not a Harvard professor, a New York Times writer or a football player. Apparently, saving the whales is more important than saving 5.5 billion people. Paul Watson, founder and president of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and famous for militant intervention to stop whalers, now warns mankind is “acting like a virus” and is harming Mother Earth. The measure, meaning electricity will only be available in homes between 1700 and 2100 local time, is likely to come into force immediately. The move is designed to support the country's wheat farmers who need power to irrigate their crops. Rampant inflation has led to widespread shortages of fuel and food. The monthly rate of inflation rose to 2,200% in March, the highest in the world. Farm priority Critics accuse President Robert Mugabe of presiding over the destruc…

That means one of the favourites for the title will not make it past the opening hurdle at The Crucible. O'Sullivan beat the Chinese teenager 10-3 in January's Masters final, when a rowdy Wembley crowd upset Ding. Defending champion Graeme Dott takes on Ian McCulloch (I've beaten him ) while teenager Judd Trump faces 2005 champion Shaun Murphy and Steve Davis plays John Parrott. It is the first time the experienced duo will meet at the Crucible Theatre in 16 years. In 1991 Parrott beat Davis 16-12 in the semi-fina…

An 11-year-old girl left home alone on bank holiday Monday burned down her house and ruined a neighbour's home. It is believed she had set fire to paper with a lighter, but had been unable to put out the flames. The blaze tore through the terraced house in Walter Close, Swindon, and damaged the house next door. Swindon fire station manager Ian Jeary said the consequences could have been much worse and the fire served as a "stark warning" to all families. 'Little star' The girl escaped unscathed and another 11-year-old girl who lives nearby raised the alarm with neighbours. Megan Knowles' mother Flo, 45, said her daughter was a "little star". …

Robson fighting new cancer battle Sir Bobby Robson has been diagnosed with cancer for the fifth time. Doctors have discovered that the 74-year-old former England manager has small cancerous nodules in his lungs. "My last operation in August was a success but this time the doctors can't operate," said Robson, who has started a six-week course of chemotherapy. "The good news is that they are measuring the nodules in my lungs in millimetres rather than centimetres," Robson told the Mail on Sunday. Robson has battled the disease on and off for the last 15 years, having undergone cancer surgery four times. Currently acting as a consultant to Republic of I…

Mr Reid had been tipped to challenge Gordon Brown for the Labour leadership but he ruled himself out saying there was "no eagerness" for a contest. Mr Reid threw his weight behind Mr Brown as the next Labour leader. But he told BBC One's Politics Show he would return to the backbenches rather than serve in a Brown cabinet. He said he had discussed his position with Mr Brown, saying "Gordon said there was a place for me in his government". But he said he plans to step down from front line politics once he leaves the Cabinet after "n…

Nasty way to go Fire alarm signals time on Robbs Employees of a historic department store in Hexham learned that they were being made redundant after responding to a fire alarm. Bosses at the almost 189-year-old Robbs store deliberately set off the fire bell to clear the building of customers and get staff together in one place. At the designated fire point, the 140 members of staff were told the landmark store would be shutting in two weeks. The store's administrators called the decision "efficient and practical". Kroll, the administrators brought in by Robbs' owners Owen Owen, said that "the closure of Robbs department store was due to become public kno…

Sudan's famous goat 'wife' dies The best-known goat in Sudan has died months after being "married" to a man in the South Sudan capital, Juba, the BBC has learned. Local elders ordered a man found having sex with the goat, later called Rose, to "marry" her last February. "The idea was to publicly embarrass the man," says Tom Rhodes, editor of the Juba Post, which first ran the story. The BBC's story of the "wedding" caught the public imagination and became one of the most read internet stories. Rose, black and white, is believed to have died after choking on a plastic bag she swallowed as she was eating scraps on the streets of Juba. After the marriage, R…
