ITV and Irish broadcaster Setanta are set to pick up the rights to show the FA Cup and England home internationals. The Football Association is expected to confirm later on Friday that it has agreed a new four-year £400m-plus television deal with the two companies. The contract, which will begin in August 2008, is said to be worth £100m more than the existing deal with the BBC and BSkyB. BSkyB and Setanta won a £1.7bn auction to screen Premiership games last year. Sporting priority Snatching the FA Cup and England rights would be a major coup for ITV and its executive chairman Michael Grade. Mr Grade made boosting ITV's coverage of live sporting eve…

Fooling around on Fleet Street London is to share the 2012 Olympic games with its nearest rival Paris, according to a broadsheet newspaper. And in more apparent madness, the Highways Agency is to spend £60m painting double yellow lines on the M6. Yes, it's that time of year again. Millions of people woke up on Sunday to the great yearly tradition on Fleet Street: the April Fool's Day joke. The Daily Mail warns al fresco foodies that firing up the barbecue this summer could cost you £5 for "carbon offsets". The paper reports that councils across the UK will appoint barbecue inspectors to enter private gardens to check whether any charcoal has been burned. …

Gromit steps into HMV logo role The world famous HMV logo is to get a new dog - in the shape of the heroic and long suffering Gromit. The new image is based on the original 1898 His Master's Voice oil painting which features Nipper the dog listening to an early gramophone recording. HMV will be using the image for three months to support the promotion of children's DVDs at its stores. Bosses assured customers Nipper was not in danger and would still represent HMV in other uses of its logo. 'Much loved' Aardman's Nick Park said: "It's a great honour to be stepping in the same paw prints as an icon as big as Nipper. Gromit will look after 'the seat' fo…

Satirical US cartoon series South Park has aired a show which features the Queen committing suicide. In a parody of hit drama series 24, the British monarch is seen to be behind a plot to overthrow the US. When the plot fails, the cartoon Queen responds by putting a gun in her mouth and shooting herself. The show, now in its 11th series, has courted controversy before, making fun of the Virgin Mary, Prophet Muhammad, actor Tom Cruise and Scientology. Actor Isaac Hayes, who was the voice of Chef in the show, quit after the Scientology episode, saying it was insensitive to his "personal spiritual beliefs". At first glance, auction giant eBay and net phone firm Skype seem to have little in common apart from the fact that both do almost all of their business online. eBay is a giant marketplace used by more than 100 million people to buy and sell all manner of things to each other. In comparison, Skype has about 53 million users who make cheap phone calls via the service that relies on the net to carry the conversations. Certainly, many analysts have questioned why eBay splashed out $2.6bn (£1.4bn) to buy Skype. Good reasons On Friday 9 September, and before the deal was made public, Goldman Sachs analyst Anthony Noto circulated a memo to clients saying tha…

Hackers have stolen information from at least 45.7 million payment cards used by customers of US retailer TJX, which owns TJ Maxx, and UK outlet TKMaxx. In a statement to US watchdogs the firm said it did not know the full extent of the theft and its effect on customers. TJX added that the security breach may also have involved TKMaxx customers in the UK and Ireland. But the company added that at least three-quarters of the affected cards had expired or data had been masked. Question marks The company also told the BBC that 100 files were moved from its UK computer system in 2003, and two files were later stolen. However, a spokesperson admitted that…

What do the NFL, the band Coldplay and the humanities college at the University of Utah have in common? They've all pledged to become carbon "neutral," a blissful state of being in which the amount of greenhouse gases one emits is supposedly offset. It's the environmental equivalent of Weight Watchers. People figure out their carbon "footprint" - how many emissions they release at home, at work and through travel - and try to atone for their global warming sins. The NFL is buying energy certificates to offset the electricity used at the Super Bowl. The University of Utah is donating to a charity that pays indigenous Costa Ricans to preserve their rain forest. The tr…

  10. Onwards and upwards: Ricky Gervais with his partner Jane Fallon Bedecked in huge designer sunglasses and reclining behind the blacked-out windows of a unashamedly showy stretch limousine, Ricky Gervais has, in recent weeks, been navigating the streets of New York accompanied by his personal "property finder". The brief: to find for the comedian a suitably gracious residence in the fashionable districts of Soho or Tribeca. These days the demands of the Reading-born labourer's son are exacting. He has decreed that for the £3 million he has to spend, his new American home must be imposing enough to allow him to entertain his growing band of Hollywood "mates".…

  11. Only in the BBC World section....this should be important news, yes? The British government was advised against publicly criticising a report estimating that 655,000 Iraqis had died due to the war, the BBC has learnt. Are we really sure the report is likely to be right? That is certainly what the brief implies Foreign Office official Iraqi Health Ministry figures put the toll at less than 10% of the total in the survey, published in the Lancet. But the Ministry of Defence's chief scientific adviser said the survey's methods were "close to best practice" and the study design was "robust". Another expert agreed the method was "tried and test…

Peers have rejected a decision to build the UK's first super-casino in Manchester by just three votes. It means the plans will not be implemented, even though MPs backed the proposal by a majority of 24. The Lords vote also means that plans for 16 smaller casinos around the UK will have to be shelved. Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell said that, after the defeat, she wanted "to reflect on the outcome" and promised new proposals. 'Stand-off' Peers rejected the Gambling Order backing Manchester by 123 votes to 120, while MPs supported it by 274 to 250. It is thought likely the government will say the verdict of the Commons - the elected house of Parliament …

  13. Here is something to bake your noodle. Science hopes to change events that have already occurred Patrick Barry Sunday, January 21, 2007 Ever wish you could reach back in time and change the past? Maybe you'd like to take back an unfortunate voice mail message, or rephrase what you just said to your boss. Or perhaps you've even dreamed of tweaking the outcome of yesterday's lottery to make yourself the winner. Common sense tells us that influencing the past is impossible -- what's done is done, right? Even if it were possible, think of the mind-bending paradoxes it would create. While tinkering with the past, you might change the circumstances by whi…

A former footballer has been fined £500 for having sex in a public place. Steve Anthrobus, who had played for Millwall, Wimbledon and Shrewsbury Town, was seen having sex on a picnic blanket in Brownhills, Staffordshire. He admitted outraging public decency along with Debbie Matthews, 40, from Aldridge who was fined £250. The pair denied the charge but Stephen Thomas, defending Anthrobus, 37, from Birmingham, said he made a difficult call to his wife before the hearing. Wolverhampton Crown Court heard that that they were spotted in a field and Judge Robert Orme told them it had been deeply distressing for the members of the public who had caught them. Th…

A man who paid local children to set fire to his car in an insurance scam was caught when one of them burned his eyebrows off. Robert Cummings's car exploded after it was doused in petrol, injuring one of the boys. Cummings, from Perth, was found guilty of trying to obtain money fraudulently from his insurers. He was also found guilty of offering the boys money, giving them petrol and endangering one of them. Unemployed Cummings, of Dunkeld Road, ended up losing his car and was ordered to carry out 200 hours of community service as a result of his plan, described by police as "inept". The court heard how he spent several days trying to persuade the boys a…

The withdrawal of around 600 British troops from Bosnia-Hercegovina is due to begin as the role of international forces in the country is scaled down. UK soldiers had been targeting war criminals' support networks and reducing illegal weapons ownership. The country itself is now largely stable. Most of the returning soldiers are Welsh Guards. A small number of staff officers will remain in Sarajevo. International forces are being reduced from 6,000 to 2,500 troops. Brigadier Chris Murray, the overall commander of the British troops in Bosnia, said: "A safe and secure environment here in Bosnia has been achieved. Death toll "Now that doesn't mean for …

An undercover investigation by BBC One's Whistleblower programme has exposed serious customer service failings at a major High Street bank. BBC reporter Amanda Egbujo got a job at a Barclays bank call centre in Sunderland, then a branch in Surrey. While at Barclays, Ms Egbujo witnessed mis-selling, employees lying to customers and security failings. Barclays said the programme's findings were not truly representative of how it treats its customers. The Whistleblower programme launched a nine-month investigation after it had received a tip-off from a former Barclays employee. The employee had been disgusted at what she had been asked to do when working at…
