Women embrace long-hours culture as men bow out By BECKY BARROW - More by this author » Last updated at 10:17am on 18th January 2007 Comments (8) Women are choosing to work longer hours Women are working longer hours than at any time since records began, according to recently released figures. At the same time the number of men spending long days at the office has fallen by a fifth. The figures - from the Office for National Statistics - reflect a sea-change in British society. Increasing numbers of women are taking on high-powered jobs while their partners "downshift" or become house-husbands. In 1992, when records were first …

  2. Now, I actually think 24 is good for what it is, I mean....I quite like watching it....however I can see the amount of blatant psychological scaremongering and 'people preparation' within the show all the time and the new season looks to be taking it up a fair notch - it's a gradual and incremental process of tactics to further our acceptance of the globalist's FEAR - it's everywhere now though. If a news story can be linked to terrorism in ANY way it will. Even if it's just the use of the words 'middle-eastern' or the creepy suggestive headline banners on Fox News Channel, it'll be there, the FEAR angle well be included. Again, I quite like 24 but I hate the way it has a…

It was finally caught by forest rangers and taken back to its home. The victim was being treated in hospital.

Tom Bosley, 16, could have ended up expelled over the incident. He is the latest pupil to fall foul of headmaster Chris Richardson's zero-tolerance approach to discipline at the high-achieving school. Pupils - and some parents - at Kings of Wessex Community School in Cheddar, Somerset, have complained that the regime is excessively strict. The youngsters say they have been punished for eating in 'undesignated' food areas, w…

  5. Burger King rapped over not so big Whopper by SEAN POULTER - More by this author » Last updated at 23:36pm on 16th January 2007 Misleading meat: The Double Whopper On the television screen it was mouthwatering and mountainous. With two thick flame-grilled patties, ripe red tomatoes, crisp lettuce and crunchy onions piled high in a giant toasted bun, the Double Whopper appeared truly tantalising. Unfortunately for its maker Burger King, however, the reality was a little different. When inspectors from the advertising watchdog compared a burger made on the High Street with the version in the commercial, they found a smaller and sorrier s…

  6. Senators oppose Iraq troop boost BBC News Three leading US senators have announced agreement on a resolution to oppose US President George W Bush's plan to increase troop numbers in Iraq. The group - two Democrats and a Republican - said the plan was not in America's interests, urging an early transfer of security to Iraqi leaders. The move came as Democrats - who control Congress - began their own initiatives to block the deployment. But the White House said Mr Bush would continue to proceed with his plan. Under the new strategy announced last week, Mr Bush wants to send more than 20,000 additional troops to Iraq, the majority of them to violence-hi…

  7. 'Snowdon could be snowless within 15 years', say scientists Last updated at 23:08pm on 16th January 2007 Comments Snowdon will lose all its snow in 15 years because of global warming, experts predicted yesterday. The 3,560ft peak, the highest in England and Wales, has seen its snow covering fall by a third in ten years. Average spring temperatures are up about 2.5C. Dr Walmsley, an expert for the Countryside Council for Wales, said: "The changes that we've monitored are speeding up. "For the last two years the snow cover on Snowdon has actually been half what we'd expect in a bad year. Based on current trends there is a strong possibility…

Large areas of the Australian state of Victoria, including parts of Melbourne, have suffered power cuts after bush fires affected key supply lines. In Melbourne, trains, trams and traffic lights were affected, withcommuters being warned to expect serious delays. It is not clear when power supplies will be restored. Local media said a bush fire near Benalla, in the north-east of the state, had knocked out power lines linking Victoria to the national grid. The Liverpool club credited with launching the career of The Beatles celebrates its 50th anniversary with a 13-hour party. The Beatles played hundreds of gigs at the Cavern Club between 1961 and 1963. It was demolished in 1973 but reopened 10 years later on part of the same site using reclaimed bricks from the original building. A piece of public art, showing the site of the doorway to the original club, will be unveiled as part of the events. Cavern spokesman Dave Jones said the invitation-only party would reflect all the bands which had played at the basement club over the past 50 years. "The Merseysippi jazz band, who played the first night of the club…
