  1. Five-year-old mauled to death by dog Last updated at 14:07pm on 1st January 2007 A five-year-old girl mauled to death in her family home today was named by police as Ellie Lawrenson. The child suffered fatal injuries when she was attacked by what was believed to be a pit bull terrier at her house in Eccleston, St Helens. She died at the scene, Merseyside Police said. Children's author Philippa Pearce, who was responsible for books such as Tom's Midnight Garden, has died aged 86 after suffering a stroke. The former BBC producer wrote her first novel, Minnow on the Say, in 1955, and her home - a Cambridgeshire mill house - inspired much of her work. Tom's Midnight Garden, about a young boy who finds a secret Victorian garden at his uncle's home, was among them. It sold millions of copies and was adapted for film, TV and theatre. It also won the British Library Association's Carnegie Medal in 1958. 'Recreate everything' Pearce once told how the idea for Minnow on the Say came while she spent a hot summer being treat…

  3. An out-of-control 43-tonne milk tanker sliced through three homes and sent a man flying from his living room. The tanker clipped the first house, damaging a bedroom, then ploughed through the middle of two neighbouring homes in a Hollywood-like demolition scene at Waipawa in Hawkes Bay. No one was at home in the first two houses, but a 55-year-old man with a broken ankle was in the third home, watching television in his lounge. The tanker smashed through the lounge wall, and the impact hurled him through a doorway into the next room, a dining area. His good leg was fractured in two places, and last night he was in a stable condition in Hastings Hospital. Th…

The first batch of computers built for the One Laptop Per Child project could reach users by July this year. The scheme is hoping to put low-cost computers into the hands of people in developing countries. Ultimately the project's backers hope the machines could sell for as little as $100 (£55). The first countries to sign up to buying the machine include Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Nigeria, Libya, Pakistan and Thailand. The so-called XO machine is being pioneered by Nicholas Negroponte, who launched the project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab in 2004. Test machines are expected to reach children in February as the project builds towards a …

Disc jockey Mike Read has been invited to an interview with party chairman Francis Maude and has made the unofficial shortlist of viable potential runners. He joins a slightly eccentric list of London Assembly members and wannabes for the final selection process, due to take place in early summer. Although a newcomer to politics, Mr Rea…

A drunk who dialled 999 complained to police there was too much chilli sauce on his kebab. Another caller wanted help to find a pizza takeaway. Northumbria Police have revealed some of the more outrageous 'emergency' calls to highlight the problem of people abusing the 999 system. The pizza caller asked if there were any pizza shops still open and when he was told that was not an emergency, replied: "It is mate, my wife is pregnant and gagging for pizza." One woman called claiming two spiders were attacking her in her cellar. Another wanted officers to get her lazy son out of bed and into work after he reported sick. Supt Neil Adamson, of the Communicati…

A man who drank so much that he collapsed and passed out with his head on a railway line has been ordered to do community service by a court. Kevin Craswell, a former company director who is now unemployed, risked being electrocuted or being hit by a train after drinking a "lethal" amount. CCTV footage of the incident at Epsom railway station in March captured by a police helicopter showed a train being diverted to avoid striking him. He was sentenced by Redhill magistrates in Surrey after pleading guilty to a charge of obstructing the railway by neglect. The alcoholic faced up to six months in prison when he appeared in court. But magistrate Ron Fewtrell s…

  10. English Professors Are Detached From Reality by Elizabeth Kantor Posted Jan 02, 2007 It’s official: you spend tens of thousands of dollars to send your kids to college. In return, the colleges turn out graduates who are more ignorant than when they enrolled. According to a recent report from the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, seniors at Yale, Berkeley, Johns Hopkins, and several other top schools actually know less about American history and government than entering freshmen. But students don’t just learn (or unlearn, as the case may be) facts in college. They also learn attitudes and principles. In other words, they form their characters—which, …

  11. Jade's ex to fight over kids access Last updated at 11:47am on 2nd January 2007 Jade Goody is locked in a bitter row with her ex-partner Jeff Brazier over access to their two children. The argument erupted just a day before Jade, 25, is due to return to the Big Brother house. Sources say Brazier is considering a custody battle after becoming increasingly concerned that Jade's new boyfriend Jack Tweedy sees more of toddlers Bobby Jack, three, and Freddie, two, than he does. Matters came to a head over Christmas, when Jade and Jack took the boys away to her mum Jackiey's - meaning Jeff, 24, barely saw his sons over the holiday. A frien…

  12. Labelling cheese as junk food 'unfair' What did I do wrong? New advertising rules that will officially label cheese as "junk food" were condemned yesterday by the dairy industry as unfair, misleading and counter-productive. Under regulations coming into force this month, broadcasters will be banned from advertising cheese during children's television programmes or in shows with a large proportion of child viewers, such as The Simpsons and Hollyoaks. The ban is part of a government drive to crack down on junk food adverts on television, which is designed to reduce the exposure of children to foods high in fat, salt and sugar. It follows evidence that TV co…

By CLEMMIE MOODIE Last updated at 08:41am on 1st January 2007 Kate Moss is planning to marry her drug-addict boyfriend Pete Doherty in Thailand, reports suggested last night. As the New Year dawned on the island of Phuket, there were persistent rumours that the 32-year-old model was about to wed. Jack Double, 14, was handed the on-the-spot fixed penalty by two council litter enforcement officers. He said: 'I was walking along with a bag of chips on my lunch break when I bit into one and found it was really hard. 'The other half was green so I just threw it to a seagull.' Jack refused to give his name to the officers but they followed him back to Chantry High School in Ipswich where staff identified him. The honour was revoked following Hamed's 15-month prison sentence for dangerous driving. Hamed's former trainer Brendan Ingle said it will be a "terrible blow" to the former featherweight. 19. The PE kit that keeps itself clean Last updated at 22:00pm on 31st December 2006 It has never been one of the more rewarding tasks of parenthood. But science may be about to lighten the load of those faced with transferring that used PE kit from the bag to the washing machine. The breakthrough comes in the form of a 'self-cleaning coating' that can be applied to fabrics. The process gives the material a host of properties, such as the ability to repel water, resist stains and kill off bacteria that grow in sweat and make clothes smell. They have already produced T-shirts and underwear for the U.S. Air Force that can be worn for weeks without washing. Now…

The woman, who became pregnant after receiving IVF treatment in Latin America, gave birth by caesarean section, a spokeswoman at Hospital de la Santa Creu i San Pau told Reuters. Both the woman, from the southern Spanish region of Andalucia, and her babies were in good health the hospital said, though she added doctors had put the babies in an incubator. 21. Cigarette-buying age set to rise The government is to raise the legal minimum age at which tobacco can be bought in England and Wales from 16 to 18 years from October. The move, announced by Public Health Minister Caroline Flint, will follow the introduction of a ban on smoking in public and work places later this year. The ban comes into place in Wales in April and England three months later. About 9% of 11 to 15-year-olds smoke and ministers hope the move will reduce this figure. However, experts warned other measures were also needed. The government argues that raising the legal age to 18 will make it easier for retailers to spot under-age smokers.…

A woman has accidentally put her baby grandson through an X-ray machine at Los Angeles International Airport. A security worker noticed the shape of the one-month-old child on the carry-on baggage screening monitor and pulled him out, the Los Angeles Times reported. The child was rushed to hospital but doctors said it did not receive a dangerous dose of radiation. "This was an innocent mistake by an obviously inexperienced traveller," said Paul Haney, from the city's airport agency. Mr Haney said an infant in a car seat had gone through an X-ray machine in a similar case at Los Angeles airport in 1988. http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,91059-1244825…

US diplomats around the world have been warned to prepare for the execution of Saddam Hussein within days. The US State Department cabled all embassies, and also denied reports that Iraq's former leader had already been transferred to Iraqi custody. The cable comes on a day of feverish speculation about his fate. Defence lawyers have lodged an appeal in a US court asking a judge to block his execution, arguing that his trial violated the US constitution. But Iraq's prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki has said there will be no reprieve for Saddam Hussein, whose final appeal against his death sentence was turned down on Tuesday. No official details have been made public…

The ripper doesnt necessarily have to convert them into an ipod friendly format as I have Videora Ipod Converter for that - although if it makes the whole process quicker then that would be great.
