London Tube Poster (I used to see these all the time) Tuesday, January 9, 2007 This is an actual British Government poster outside a London Tube Station. Looks like they ripped it straight from the set of 'Brazil.'" It's a gorgeous work of art. The colors in the bus windows are appealing. However.... Update: Photos of eyes keep people honest. A short article by Clive Thompson in the New York Times Magazine describes an experiment at the psychology department at Newcastle University. There's a self-service coffee station where people are asked to pay for the coffee and biscuits they take using the honor system. For 10 weeks this spring, they alternat…

The transsexual postman so upset he hid delivery parcels By CHRIS BROOKE - More by this author » Last updated at 22:00pm on 12th January 2007) 'Michelle' Pearson, left, and right as Michael Pearson A transsexual postman hid hundreds of parcels at home because stone-throwing yobs were making his daily round a nightmare. Married father-of-one Michael Pearson also threw away some of the mail in a bid to shorten his delivery round and "reduced the risk of confrontation" with teenage gangs plaguing the estate. The 43-year-old, who yesterday appeared at Dewsbury Magistrates Court wearing a dress, high heels and matching pink lipstick and nail varnish, ad…

'I was grabbed and thrown in U.S. jail for crossing road' A distinguished British historian claims he was knocked to the ground by an American policeman before being arrested and spending eight hours in jail — all because he crossed the road in the wrong place. Felipe Fernandez-Armesto, 56, said he had been the victim of “terrible, terrible violence” after he inadvertently committed the offence of “jaywalking” in Atlanta, Georgia, last week and failed to realise that the man telling him to stop was a police officer. The slight, bespectacled professor claimed that five policemen then pinned him to the ground after Kevin Leonpacher kicked his legs from under him. …

Make motorway limit 80mph to cut jams, Ministers told By ANDREW BAXTER and STEVE MYALL - More by this author » Last updated at 21:01pm on 13th January 2007 Motorists: 'They would benefit from a target speed of 78mph on motorways' The speed limit on motorways should be raised to help the network to function more efficiently, a report for the Government has concluded. Motorists would benefit most if traffic travelled at a 'target speed' of 78mph, it said. This would enable quicker journeys, without seriously jeopardising safety. The report by the Highways Agency examined the overall costs and economic benefits of travelling at speeds of be…

The Rocky and Rambo star Sylvester Stallone took to the football pitch at Goodison Park before watching Everton play Reading. Stallone, 60, got a rousing reception from the 30,000 plus crowd on Sunday as he held up a blue-and-white Everton scarf and punched the air on the field. He said cheers from the 30,000-strong crowd turned him into an Everton fan. Stallone is a friend of Blues shareholder Robert Earl and is in the UK to promote his latest film. Rocky Balboa is his sixth film in the series. The original Rocky, released in 1976, told the story of a small-time boxer from Philadelphia who gets a shot at the world heavyweight title. Speaking at the …

HD-DVD goes beyond 50GB with new disc By Henning Molbaek FIRST PUBLISHED Jan 9, 2007 Toshiba has announced a new 51GB HD-DVD Rom disc at this year's CES. Beating Blu-ray by 1GB, Toshiba today said that they had successfully created a triple layer HD-DVD disc that could contain 51GB worth of data with 17GB on each layer. "Continued improvement in disc mastering technology has achieved further minimization in the recording pit, supporting a further boost in capacity to 17GB in single layer and a full 51GB on a single-sided triple-layer disc. Toshiba has confirmed the disc structure and its successful operation." said the press release. "This time-tested physi…

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Linking the fight in Iraq with the greater war on terror, President Bush told the nation there is "no magic formula for success in Iraq" but that failure there "would be a disaster for the United States." He announced plans to add more troops. Bush said that if the situation in Iraq does not turn for the better, "Radical Islamic extremists would grow in strength and gain new recruits." They would then be emboldened to topple moderate governments and "use oil revenues to fund their ambitions." Iran would also have an opportunity to ratchet up its pursuit of nuclear weapons. Bush gave two reasons for the failure to secure Baghdad in parti…

I think Mitt Romney may be the next U.S. president. He was the Republican governor from Massachusetts. He is a Mormon. There has never been a Mormon president. Can Romney be the first? He has filed with the Federal Election Commission, allowing him to raise money for the 2008 Republican nomination. Willard Mitt Romney was born March 12, 1947 in Detroit. He is the son of George Romney, a 1968 presidential candidate. He and his wife, Ann, have 5 sons. Ann has multiple sclerosis. Romney has a B.A. from Brigham Young University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He co-founded Bain Capital, an equity investment firm, and made a fortune, helping to start Staples o…

I recently watched Spike Lee's "When The Levees Broke" on dvd and I have to say it was the most impressionistic docu I have seen a long time. (if impressionistic is even a word :() But its the only word I can find at the moment to describe it. In it, the spoke about how a nearby town of Gretna (located just west of NO -over a bridge on the other side of the Mississippi) turned people away from their city. Literally told people to go back to flooded NO to wait for help. People who had walked there.... across the bridge, and then only to be turned around by police armed with GUNS!!! I think its a disgrace. I hadn't heard about the story until I was the docu, but this d…

Note when I posted this, it wasn't even on Sky News or BBC News until many hours afterwards. A U.S. Air Force gunship has conducted a strike against suspected members of al Qaeda in Somalia.. The AC-130 gunship is capable of firing thousands of rounds per second, and sources say a lot of bodies were seen on the ground after the strike, but there is as yet, no confirmation of the identities. The gunship flew from its base in Dijibouti down to the southern tip of Somalia, Martin reports, where the al Qaeda operatives had fled after being chased out of the capital of Mogadishu by Ethiopian troops backed by the United States.

Big Ben was "still standing by the end" Europe's unseasonably warm winter has almost put paid to a chess match between London and Moscow, using huge pieces carved from ice. The pieces began melting so quickly that some were almost indistinguishable by the time the match finished. Huge chessboards had been laid out in the Russian and British capitals, with grandmasters Nigel Short and Anatoly Karpov taking charge of the teams. The match was held as part of a Russian "Old New Year" festival in London. The temperature was 12C in London's Trafalgar Square and 5C in Moscow's Pushkinskaya Square - both well above average for the time of year. The whole of Europe has …

Verdict: Why did he bother? What do people want from a summer blockbuster? The folks behind Superman Returns have come up with a conventional answer: spectacular effects, a dash of romantic comedy and a superhero. But they have overlooked the factors which will make Pirates Of The Caribbean 2 a far bigger success at the box office. Superman Returns has only one terrific action sequence — when Superman saves an aeroplane from crashing — and this takes place early on. From then on, we’re left waiting for a climax that never materialises. Even in the version I saw — which features five sequences in IMAX 3D — Superman Returns is less than thrilling. There i…

Cal Ripken, Jr. & Tony Gwynn were elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Ripken got 98.53% of the 545 ballots; Gwynn got 97.6%. Ripken broke Lou Gehrig's streak by playing in 2,632 consecutive games. Gwynn won 8 batting titles. Both got over 3,000 hits. The disappointment was Mark McGwire. McGwire hit 70 home runs in 1998 and finished with 583 but only got 23.5% of the votes because of suspected steroid use and his reluctance to talk before Congress. The Baseball Writers of America do the voting. 75% of their votes are required for election. McGwire did get enough to remain on the ballot. A candidate may stay on the ballot up to 15 years. Ripken & Gwynn wi…

Schools 'will have to promote gay rights' Last updated at 22:00pm on 9th January 2007 Schools will have to promote gay rights under new legislation New gay rights laws will force schools to teach homosexual equality, one of the country's most respected judges warned yesterday. Teachers who tell pupils homosexual sex is wrong will be guilty of breaking the law, former Lord Chancellor Lord Mackay of Clashfern said. Lord Mackay claimed the Sexual Orientation Regulations mean schools could no longer instruct children in "the importance of marriage for family life" - one of the key platforms of current sex education. Those schools that do so…
