US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said she was enjoying her trip to the north-west of England despite continued anti-war protests. She was speaking at Blackburn Town Hall on Saturday following a meeting with Muslim and civic leaders. Earlier, Ms Rice and Foreign Secretary Jack Straw arrived to noise from both protesters and supporters. "I find them an exercise in democracy, I don't find them off-putting or disconcerting," she told reporters. Mr Straw described crowds of supporters outside as "remarkable" and dismissed the number of demonstrators as "not large". "They (protesters) said they were going to get bus loads and bus loads in. Well they didn…

Apple has introduced volume controls for iPods following fears about links between personal music players and potentially irreversible hearing loss. The company has made available a free download update allowing users to set a personal maximum volume limit. Parents will also be able to set a locked limit on their child's players. Health experts want more studies into the effect on hearing of earphones and Apple is facing a US legal action claiming the iPod can damage hearing. Greg Joswiak, Apple's IPod marketing vice president, said it was responding to "increased attention in this area". He said: "We want to offer customers an easy to use option to set …

March 18th 2006 (from a couple of days ago) He Wilfully violates Constitution and places himself above the law again. :/ In an amazing development that has received almost no media attention, mainstream or alternative, President Bush again placed himself above the law and wilfully violated the Constitution by signing into law a bill that didn't pass both Houses of Congress. According to representative Henry Waxman, Bush signed into law a version of the Budget Reconciliation Act that didn't pass Congress. The discrepancy between the version Bush signed and the actual bill that passed equates to a value of $2 billion. Bush knew he was directly violating the Cons…

Okay, so I use VLC to play all my mpg and avi files, but the files skip and I sometimes get error messages that there is a delay of information. I figure it is a codec issue, but I don't know which one to download to solve the problem. I am a mac user, so I am seeking some assistance as to which codec to use, DivX or 3ivx? Where do codecs go or what do they do when installed? Thx for the advice!

Hi, i recently shot some videomaterial for a little movie i'll make and while i checked the footage, i always had the song "for you" in my head, so i cut it on one sequenz. I will not use that sequnez in my movie due to the copyright law thing, but i really like the 40 sec clip as a standalone. Have a look, maybe you like it, too. (sorry for the filesize of 14mb, but it's woth it) http://kappen.name/test1.avi (it's divx) Enjoy! (Screenshot):

Scientists believe they may have discovered a reason why the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus cannot yet jump easily between humans. Flu viruses which target man tend to attach to cells further up the airway - maximising their chances of being passed on by coughing or sneezing. Researchers found the bird flu virus attaches itself to cells deep down in the human airways. The University of Wisconsin research is published in the journal Nature. The H5N1 strain of bird flu has spread across Europe, Africa and parts of Asia, and has killed more than 100 people worldwide and infected about 180 since it re-emerged in 2003. But it still cannot jump easily from human t…

Illegal DVDs are ubiquitous. But they’re costing the film industry a fortune, reports David Rose It is late on Saturday afternoon and “Mai”, a young Chinese woman, has just walked into a crowded East London pub, carrying a supermarket carrier bag. She approaches the tables of drinkers with a knowing smile, offering them an open fan of multicoloured artwork in polythene wrapping. Emerging from her bag are dozens of pirate copies of the latest and future cinema releases, burned on to DVDs. “Three for ten pound, ” she announces, “or four pound each.” It is a scene now familiar in pubs, markets, workplaces and even school playgrounds across the country, with the title…

Not unlike the red, lidless orb of the evil Sauron, the eye of the theatre world swivelled towards Toronto last night for the long-awaited opening of the stage version of J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic trilogy. It is a collaboration between the director Matthew Warchus, Shaun McKenna (book and lyrics), the composer A. R. Rahman, who is best known for Bombay Dreams, and the Finnish folk group Varttina under the musical supervision of Christopher Nightingale. It is also an enterprise daring almost to the point of foolhardiness. Yet, on the whole, it works, without resorting to the slick but soulless spectacle of Cirque du Soleil, or declining into Gothic cliché, a pitfall ev…
