A Muslim student had to pay extra for security checks when applying for a visa to visit the United States, because his name was Mohammed. Mohammed Umar Haleem Khan, 22, was told by US Embassy officials that "a lot of bad people" shared his name. The Manchester Metropolitan University student had to pay an extra $80 (£45) to have his fingerprints checked against a US terror suspect database. An embassy spokesman said it could not say how visa applications are assessed. "We do have expedited procedures for exchange visitors and students that should allow us to process the visa before the travel date," he said. "In general, there are any number of reasons w…

The lead actor in the movie "United 93" will miss the film's premiere Tuesday in New York City because the U.S. Embassy is denying him a visa. British actor Lewis Alsamari plays the main hijacker in the film, which depicts the final hours of the passengers on United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed in Shanksville, Pa., on Sept. 11, 2001. Although Alsamari was granted asylum in the United Kingdom in 1998, American authorities are less keen to welcome him across the Atlantic. "I was born in Iraq but have lived in Britain since 1995 and am about to apply for British citizenship," he told contactmusic.com. Source - http://www.courant.com

  3. Take That have opened their reunion tour in Newcastle, with former member Robbie Williams joining them briefly on stage - but only in hologram form. Gary Barlow, Jason Orange, Mark Owen and Howard Donald are playing 29 dates, a decade after originally splitting up. Williams appeared for the introduction of Could It Be Magic before the others took over and the hologram faded. More than 9,000 fans watched eight costume changes and huge light shows around a circular stage. Women reliving their teenage years were among the audience at Newcastle's gig. One fan, Julia Higgins, 35, of Chester-le-Street, County Durham, said: "Jason is my favourite, and I think h…

Here is the only one I have so far, small enough to scan. The others are on huge canvases and I don't havea HUGE scanner  It's not paints....it's runny colored tissue paper. I do use a paint brush, or small sponge to make the color run and form. The darker spots are india ink.

Dems split as impeachment whispers get louder Some see anti-Bush movement as distracting from key issues, boosting GOP By Michael Powell The Washington Post Updated: 4:06 a.m. ET March 25, 2006 HOLYOKE, Mass. - To drive through the mill towns and curling country roads here is to journey into New England's impeachment belt. Three of this state's 10 House members have called for the investigation and possible impeachment of President Bush. Thirty miles north, residents in four Vermont villages voted earlier this month at annual town meetings to buy more rock salt, approve school budgets and impeach the president for lying about Iraq having weapons of mass destr…

Newcastle United striker (and arguably the best player in the history of the Premiership) Alan Shearer was taken off injured during the 4-1 win over local rivals Sunderland. The forward is retiring at the end of the season after a long reign as the clubs number 9. This means he has only 3 games left for his home town team. This season could be over for him, however, as fears he has torn a ligament in his knee grow in the North East. :( Shearer's career could be over. Overshadows completely what a great win the mackem game was. Hope it's not as serious as it's thought to be.

Drugs companies 'inventing diseases to boost their profits' By Mark Henderson, Science Correspondent London Times | April 11, 2006 PHARMACEUTICAL companies are systematically creating diseases in order to sell more of their products, turning healthy people into patients and placing many at risk of harm, a special edition of a leading medical journal claims today. It was 35 years ago that Mr Tickle first made an appearance, kicking off generation after generation's love for the Mr Men and the Little Miss books. The Mr Men were the creation of Roger Hargreaves who came up with the Mr Tickle character when his young son Adam asked what a tickle looked like. Now decades later there are more than 40 Mr Men characters and 30 Little Misses. An exhibition to mark the anniversary has opened at the Animation Art Gallery in London. Adam took over the Mr Men empire in 1988 when his father died suddenly at the age of 53. He had never attempted to draw any of the Mr Men before he was plunged into the world of children's …

An Associated Press review found states are exploiting a legal loophole that is giving a false picture of academic progress. The law also is creating financial gain for some private consultants, and leaving teachers increasingly skeptical that all children will be able to read…

It was so good I had to watch it again when I got home on the TV. The story as I was told and read as a kid was a 21st century adapation, and the idea using various manchester athems, made the mancs extremly proud. The calendar is Google's latest effort to offer all-purpose web services. Earlier this month, it raised $2.07bn (£1.2bn) through its second share sale in seven months. It plans to use the cash from the sale to fight off stiff competition and stay ahead as the world's most used search engine. Google Calend…
