SANDWICH: IS IT THE END OF THE BRITISH BUTTY? More people are tucking into croissants instead of making traditional sandwiches Saturday February 6,2010 By Tom Morgan Have your say(2) THE great British sandwich is under threat from fancy foreign interlopers. Sales of traditional bread, rolls and baps have fallen while products such as croissants, bagels and tortillas are taking an ever larger slice of the market, researchers have found. And instead of filling their lunchbox with home-made butties, many more people are treating…

School bans 'slovenly' mothers from wearing pyjamas when they drop their children off By Laura Clark Last updated at 3:39 PM on 05th February 2010 Schools are following Tesco's example and taking a stand against parents who turn up at the gates wearing pyjamas. They are chastising parents for dropping children off - and collecting them in the afternoon - without first changing out of their nightwear and slippers. One head has written to parents warning that their failure to get dressed for the school run is 'slovenly and rude'. Parents are being urged to dress appropriately when dropping their children off at school (file photo) He took acti…

Treo, an eight-year-old black labrador, has spent the past five years sniffing out bombs and weapons hidden by the Taliban. Yet as a puppy he was a badly behaved rebel in danger of being put down until intensive Army training turned him into the gutsy canine described by his handler, Sergeant Dave Hey…

A young skier was buried beneath an avalanche for 17 hours before being pulled from the snow with only mild hypothermia, Swiss police said Sunday. The 21-year-old man appeared to have survived because he was trapped next to a pocket of air that allowed him to breathe even though he was unable to free himself from the crushing weight of the snow, police in the southern canton of Valais said. "I've never heard of such a case before," said police spokesman Jean-Marie Bornet. "It's already very difficult to survive more than 45 minutes beneath an avalanche." The man, who had been skiing alone on an unmarked slope in the Evolene region about 80 kilometers (50 miles) e…

So Lady GaGa's decision to abandon her usual outré attire for a trip out with a small baby was - dare one say it - eminently sensible. Ambling around make-up free in studded leather vest, white T-shirt and black jeans, the chart-topping singer looked surprisingly ordinary. Keeping mum: Lady GaGa steps out for some retail therapy at a vintage clothing store i…

By LEANNE ITALIE Associated Press Writer Micki Sievwright has a new set of wheels that her husband constantly refers to as "my truck." The same goes for their apartment and the backyard grill. Turns out the pronouns the Denver couple use count for more than mere semantics in the long haul. A new study suggests that "we" language used between spouses in times of conflict goes along with less negative behavior and signs of stress in lengthy marriages. Previous studies have indicated that use of inclusive pronouns that include "we," "our" and "us" - versus "I," "me" and "you" - are evidence of marital satisfaction in younger couples like Sievwright and hubby Dane, …
