Underwear in Public Not Indecent, Court Says

 

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (Reuters) - Wearing underwear and nothing else in public does not constitute indecency, a Massachusetts court declared on Thursday as it tossed out charges against six animal rights protesters.

 

 

 

Members of the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals were arrested and charged with indecency and disturbing the peace after a chilly rally in March near Harvard University where they stripped to their skivvies and staged a nearly naked pillow fight to protest against fur.

 

 

Six months and three court dates later, a Cambridge, Massachusetts, judge threw out the indecency charges against all six PETA members.

 

 

All but one of the protesters -- PETA Vice President Dan Mathews -- were also cleared of disturbing the peace. Mathews was ordered to pay a $300 fine.

 

 

Mathews told Reuters he was relieved that the indecent exposure charges were dismissed, noting that a conviction on such a charge would have forced him and the other demonstrators to register as sex offenders in Massachusetts.

Naked Thrill-Seekers Hope to Smash Ride Record

Nude thrill-seekers were gathering at Britain’s biggest theme park today to try to smash a world record.

 

Thirty-two bare daredevils will board Nemesis at Alton Towers, in Staffordshire, in an attempt to break the record for the greatest number of nude people to ride a rollercoaster.

 

The current record was set on the Nemesis Inferno rollercoaster at Thorpe Park, Surrey, in May this year.

 

Riders’ legs dangle freely on the Staffordshire structure, which can hold up to 32 people and subjects thrill-seekers to a force three-and-a-half times greater than gravity.

 

Marketing manager Mike Lorimer said: “We’re delighted to be able to help break this record.

 

“Obviously it’s not something that can be done every day, so we’re hoping for an evening of good weather to make the attempt a little more comfortable for those involved.

 

“The response so far has exceeded all expectations, so we’re quietly confident that we’ll break the 28 passenger record.”

 

The result of today’s bid, which will start once the park closes to the public, will not be known until a television programme celebrating the 50th anniversary of Guinness World Records is aired next month.
