proud Canadian

I'm 4th generation Canadian (not that it matters how long my family has lived here). I do think Canada is special. I think it's the best country in the world to live, but I'm afraid we're losing our distinction due to successive governments that seem to think the US got it right and we should be more like them to compete economically. One only has to look at the decline of our public health care system to see the effects of those government policies. That said, it's also because of our economic policies that we didn't get hit as hard as many countries by this recession.

I've lived in the USA for two stints - once in Chicago and once in Boston. In my opinion, there are two issues that most clearly illustrate why we're better: 1) gun culture; and 2) racism. Not that we don't have both in Canada, but they permeate US culture and, honestly, I don't see that changing. Cycles of recycled revenge!

As for our arts and culture, I think we are great. I think we excel in music, dance, visual arts and film. But I think it's tragic that we lose so many of our best and brightest to the US. I think we all win because of our bi-lingual and multi-cultural policies.

I'm not a sports fan. In fact (here come the rotten tomatoes) I think that hockey should be regulated so that violence is not the main attraction. For the life of me, I just don't get North American football, but I love soccer. Baseball is ok, but it's got too much Americn patriiotism attached to it and it's really pretty boring. Still. I guess we hold our own in sports on the international stage.

My most favouite things about being Canadian are:

1) The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms;

2) The magnificence and scale of our geography;

3) Our "social safety net", even given its current state of neglect;

4) The CBC; and

5) Bacon and male syrup (together of course, eh!?).

that was pretty epic

not to disagree, but racism is everywhere, that's something nobody can really escape.

we do have a distinction, and though we may be stereotyped, we do a lot of things Globally which go un-noticed. Our music and films don't get as much attention as they should, because they are of excellent quality, but we are fortunately to experience it if we are here.

It is a great country

that was pretty epic

thanks, I guess so, in this environment

sadly true - hopefully we can evolve

we do have a distinction, and though we may be stereotyped, we do a lot of things Globally which go un-noticed. (fighting for the creation UN Peacekeeping Forces was the contribution of Lester B. Pearson)
