Hello there guitarchic, sorry don't know your name. I think you got to take it line by line. ask yourself why you like the song and does it make any connection with personal experiences you've had? For instance, the lines...

tides that I tried to swim against

have brought me down upon my knees...you are, you are...

 

I interpret these lines as me running out of time to solve a personal problem, something that I tried to change and yet couldn't and I'm sorry for not being able to succeed, but there is that special someone that will make it okay.

i think it means.....you get the nerve up to tell someone how you feel and when you do it turns out they feel the same and in the end if you woulnd thave got the nerve up to ask than nothing good would have come out of it...cuz life imitates actions....well that what i think but who knows what chris felt while writing it
