Britney Spears was hospitalized late Thursday night after the pop star locked herself in a room with one of her children at her L.A. home and refused to hand him over to ex-husband Kevin Federline.

Spears, who according to police appeared to be "under the influence of an unknown substance," was strapped to a gurney and rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Federline later showed up and custody of the children, Preston, 2, and Jayden, 1, was transferred to him.

A source tells PEOPLE the pop star's court-appointed child monitor called police. "She had already put Preston in the car when Britney locked herself in a room with Jayden," says the source.

Spears, who has visitation rights with the kids, was scheduled to give the boys over to Federline at 7 p.m. Thursday. A bodyguard for Federline arrived to pick up the boys at the designated time, but Spears refused to relinquish her sons, according to a source.

According to police, officers responded around 8 p.m. to a call "about a custodial dispute regarding Britney Spears's children," says Los Angeles police Officer Jason Lee.

Nearly three hours later, police determined that a court order stated that the singer's children, who were with Spears at the time, were supposed to be with Kevin Federline, and a transfer was arranged, according to Lee.

"While officers were on the scene, they observed Ms. Spears under the influence of an unknown substance," Lee added. (PHOTOS: Britney in the ambulance: http://www.people.com/people/gallery/0,,20169408,00.html)

In addition to multiple officers, fire trucks, two ambulances and a police helicopter were all on the scene. Spears was seen being taken to an ambulance on a gurney. (See video here: http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20169337,00.html)

Britney's Father Arrives at Hospital

After Spears arrived at the hospital, her father, Jamie, and her ex, Federline – as well as both of her sons – were spotted there.

Police – as well as Federline's lawyer Mark Vincent Kaplan – arrived at the house close to 8 p.m., though Kaplan was later seen leaving.

Earlier in the day, Spears showed up 90 minutes late to a scheduled deposition in her custody case – and stayed for only a fraction of an hour.

Back at her Studio City home directly after the hearing, when a photographer asked if Kaplan was nice to her, Spears, 26, responded with an emphatic, "No!"

When reached by PEOPLE, Spears's lawyer Sorrell Trope, who on Wednesday filed a request to withdraw from the singer's custody case, said only: "No comment."

Britney on 72-Hour Mental Lockdown

Britney Spears was placed on lockdown for a mental evaluation Friday after the pop star locked herself in a room with one of her children at her L.A. home and refused to hand him over to ex-husband Kevin Federline.

A source tells PEOPLE it was the pop star's court-appointed child monitor who called police. "She had already put Preston in the car when Britney locked herself in a room with Jayden," says the source. "The cops came and got through the door and tied her down to a gurney."

Spears, who according to police appeared to be "under the influence of an unknown substance," was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where the source says she will be on a minimum of a 72-hour lock down for mental evaluation.

The evaluation, known as a "5150 Hold," is, according to the medical code, "When any person, as a result of mental disorder, is a danger to others, or to himself or herself, or gravely disabled." The "mobile crisis team" is able to make this recommendation in writing and take a patient be evaluated and treated. Spears's Welfare

Spears, who has visitation rights with her two sons Preston, 2, and Jayden, 1, was scheduled to give the boys over to Federline at 7 p.m. Thursday.

According to police, officers responded around 8 p.m. to a call "about a custodial dispute regarding Britney Spears's children," says Los Angeles police Officer Jason Lee.

Nearly three hours later, police determined that a court order stated that the singer's children, who were with Spears at the time, were supposed to be with Federline, and a transfer was arranged, according to Lee.

"While officers were on the scene, they observed Ms. Spears under the influence of an unknown substance," Lee added.

LAPD called the incident an "ongoing investigation" and says, "for her own welfare, [spears] was taken to the local hospital for treatment."

Preston was taken to the hospital by Federline's assistant, and Jayden was in the ambulance with the monitor, a source says, adding that the boys "won't be back with [spears] for a long time." Federline took his sons home early Friday morning. Spears's father Jamie remains at the hospital.

Meanwhile, Federline's lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, arrived at court in an attempt to strip Spears of her visitation rights. Kaplan and Spears attorney Tara Scott met with the judge for about a half hour in chambers.

Brit's in Pieces: The Update

832x8hd.jpg

While you were at lunch, K-Fed's lawyer used an emergency hearing to petition—and get—full custody of Sean Preston and Jayden James. Brit was also stripped of her visitation rights.

No surprise, additional details surrounding the Britney Spears meltdown tragedy just keep getting uglier and uglier...

* Brit's former assistant Alli Sims had to break through a bathroom door to reach the singer. According to Page Six, Alli used a hammer to reach Brit and Jayden and then called emergency services. (A claim Alli denies to Us.) She had reportedly been at the house ever since an allegedly distraught Spears returned from a custody deposition, and she was trying to calm her down. The cost of a new door is nothing compared with the therapy bills Jayden's gonna require after this.

* One-year-old Jayden was taken to the hospital after the incident Thursday night. A family insider tells Page Six Britney had told officers he had a bruise on him, adding, "And she said she did not do it." He was examined, but he didn't require treatment and was released into Kevin's care.

* Once Britney reached the hospital, she was processed by a nurse and then stripped, and her clothing and personal belongings were locked away in a safe, purportedly to prevent her from harming herself, according to Page Six. The singer was then examined by a psychiatrist concerning her mental state.

* Paparazzi leech Adnan Ghalib may have spent a lot of time with Britney lately, but he wasn't there yesterday, nor has he visited her at Cedars-Sinai, according to People. Thankfully, her father, Jamie Spears, and pal Sam Lutfi have checked in on her. Hey, even if they have been feuding, we're happy she has family to lean on. The girl's gonna need 'em now more than ever.

I feel sorry for her, its a shame that she has mental issues that are going untreated. I think its awful how the media pokes fun at her life when clearly she's a troubled person, despite what anyone may think about her music. I hope she gets better for her babies. :embarassed:

^^I agree. For the sake of her kids, I hope she gets help. They've been saying for a while now that she's shown signs of bipolar disorder, and that's why there's pictures of her in the ambulance smiling. They've said that she kept smiling and crying at times. If that really is true, then I hope she gets help. So what if it's Britney? It's a person in need and she really needs to get help. It's just even more sad that it's Britney, really.

Why Was Britney Released From The Hospital?

873wz6g.jpg

Britney Spears was let go from Cedars Sinai medical center because she no longer posed an imminent threat to herself as perceived by the hospital, PerezHilton.com.

The trainwreck demanded to be released, and Cedars Sinai had no choice but to let her go.

A source tells us, "It is very difficult to keep a patient in a psych ward at a hospital for longer than 24 to 48 hours. Even if you have tried to committ suicide (which Brit did not do) you are released as soon as you are no longer a threat to yourself. It is very very rare for someone to be in the psych ward of a hospital for more than a week or two even after attempting suicide."

Continues our source, "Brit is no different than other mentally ill people. After being admitted and given meds they are released if they are not a suicidal threat to themselves or others."

Spears' father, Jamie, was with Britney the morning of her release.

Update:

Britney probably left AMA (against medical advice), we're told.

A source says, "Normally, you have to have a court order or judge ruling to keep someone against their will in the hospital."

Britney's dad or lawyers should do that ASAP!!!!!!!

Britney Insider: She's "Doing a Lot Better"

8a5r8mp.jpg

Britney Spears has been released from the hospital (read our news story here). But even before this development, Brit's prospects were improving, according to her manager pal Sam Lutfi.

In an exclusive interview with E! News' Jason Kennedy, Lutfi gave fresh details and insight into Britney's condition and progress while the troubled pop star was undergoing psychiatric observation at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Jason Kennedy: How is Britney doing?

Sam Lutfi: She is doing a lot better than Thursday night, she's reached out to her mom and Jamie Lynn and they've been in constant contact...they have shown wonderful support to her.

7xe2edl.jpg

How do you respond to the reports that Britney has a mental illness?

I'm not commenting on those reports.

When Kevin came to the hospital to pick up the children, did he see or speak to Brit?

No!

Lutfi wouldn't comment directly to Kennedy about the specifics of what happened at Britney's home Thursday night. But when asked \why police were at her home for so long, Lutfi said he just wanted to make sure police were following proper procedures and abiding by the court documents, adding that he wished "that the whole situation had been handled better."

And speaking of better, that's what we all wish for Ms. Spears. Get well soon, Brit. Stay tuned for more details as this story develops.

Britney Back To Her Usual Tricks!

6llogad.jpg

Brit Brit must be bored and hungry for even more attention.

The mentally unstable mother of two went for a little drive Saturday afternoon, just hours after being released from the hospital, our friends at The Insider tell PerezHilton.com.

"Britney just tried to leave her house around 11:45 A.M.," The Insider tells us. "She pulled out of the gate, drove to the end then made a U-turn and went back to [her gated community] The Summit after she saw the paparazzi."

Who goes for a drive three hours after being released from the hospital?

Someone needs to force this girl to get help!!! FAST.

Friends: Britney Suffers from 'Psychological Disease'

SUNDAY JANUARY 06, 2008 05:00 PM EST

By Ulrica Wihlborg

Britney Spears has "suffered from a psychological disease for years," says a source close to the singer.

Two separate sources who are acquaintances of the family believe the singer has never been formally diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but "there is no question she is bipolar ... she's had manic episodes for years."

According to Dr. Diana Kirschner, who has not treated Spears but is an expert on the subject, "people who show patterns of behavior like Britney are suffering from a dual diagnosis. They have both a substance abuse problem and a bipolar disorder or manic disorder." (In September, Spears was characterized by the court in her custody case to be a "habitual, frequent, and continuous" user of drugs, and was ordered to undergo random drug tests, but it's unclear if any tests returned positive.)

Michael Cartwright, the founder of a high-end treatment center in Malibu, says that based on media coverage of Spears's behavior, she appears to have a drug and alcohol addiction and bipolar disorder. "She seems deeply ill to me," he says. Last March, Spears spent time in a rehab facility, the Promises Treatment Center in Malibu.

Several friends of Spears have been told that the singer has taken anti-anxiety medication, "and who knows what she's on now. This is really a matter of her being unstable, not suicidal ... she's not balanced."

PEOPLE has learned from multiple sources that the singer also suffered from depression after both her pregnancies. "She had postpartum depression after Preston was born," says a source who was close to the family during her marriage to Kevin Federline. "She didn't want anyone's help ... It got worse after Jayden was born."

Early Signs

Dr. Kirschner says bipolar disorder "usually starts in young adulthood from age 18 through early twenties. Up until that point, the person appears to be pretty normal, but it's like a ticking bomb."

She adds: "When a person has this kind of problem, it's very hard for them to be a good parent. The main thing is for the person to go through treatment and recover ... But they generally have to hit bottom in order to turn around and recover. If the person is laughing wildly as they're taken away in the ambulance, that does not indicate that there's much connection with the consequences of their behavior."

A close family friend says "the tragic thing is that Britney loves her children and would never knowingly put them in harms way. Her mental instability is getting in the way of her making proper judgment and it's extremely unfortunate."

Source: Britney Tested Free of Alcohol, Drugs

Britney Spears

Britney Spears tested free of illegal drugs and alcohol during her two-night stay at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, a reliable source tells PEOPLE.

"She tested clean," the source says. "This lady is as clean as clean can be, and has been for some time."

The source adds the pop star never threatened suicide during the four-hour standoff at her Studio City home Jan. 3, saying such rumors were "bull----."

Spears, 26, was hospitalized early the morning of Jan. 4 under California's "5150 Hold," in which she was deemed a danger to herself or others and could be held for 72 hours for evaluation. Based on officers' observations at the scene, police said she appeared to be "under the influence of an unknown substance."

Two separate sources who are acquaintances of the family tell PEOPLE they believe the singer has an undiagnosed bipolar disorder. One of those sources says Spears has "suffered from a psychological disease for years."

Spears left the hospital on Saturday, well before the 72 hours. Patients can be released early if doctors determine they no longer require treatment or evaluation.

"The 5150 legality is very loose," says Dr. Nathan Kuemmerle, a West Hollywood psychiatrist. "The 72 hours are not firm. All it requires is an ER psychiatrist to release the patient. ... If Britney isn't suicidal or homicidal, she doesn't need to be hospitalized."

COVER STORY SNEAK PEEK: Britney's Mental Illness

THURSDAY JANUARY 10, 2008 01:30 PM EST

8704vnn.jpg

Britney Spears's family "is terrified," a family friend tells PEOPLE in its latest cover story, on newsstands Friday. With the singer continuing to shun longtime friends and relatives, "everyone has been worried for some time," says the source. "Her world has been crumbling around her."

As the drama rapidly unfolds, the questions seemed to be: How did the once-sparkling singer with the homespun charm and earnest enthusiasm fall so far, and so hard – and what can be done to help her?

Several sources say the events are the results of a long-gestating mental illness. "She's suffered from a psychological disease for years," says a source close to the singer. Two separate sources close to Spears believe she has been diagnosed as bipolar, while additional sources confirm she has been prescribed at least one antidepressant/anti-anxiety drug.

Yet "she does not think she has a problem," says a source close to Spears. Dr. Mark Goulston, a Santa Monica-based psychiatrist who has not treated Spears, points out that "manic behavior is when you don't have any sense of rules. There's a grandiosity: 'I play by my own rules.' "

For more on this story, including Britney's behavior while in the hospital, and ex-husband Kevin Federline's reaction to the situation, pick up the new PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday.

Britney Steps Out – in Her Old Wedding Dress

SATURDAY JANUARY 12, 2008 05:00 PM EST

By Pernilla Cedenheim and Mike Fleeman

Something borrowed, something ... leased?

Revisiting her wedding look, Britney Spears donned one of two dresses from her Kevin Federline nuptials to go to a car dealership last week with her new paparazzi friend.

Spears, 26, and Adnan Ghalib, 35, arrived at the Keyes Mercedes-Benz dealership in the San Fernando Valley on Friday afternoon, surrounded by the now-familiar pack of photographers that once contained Ghalib.

The twist was the pop singer was wearing the same lacy, short dress from her 2004 wedding to Federline – her second walk down the aisle following her 55-hour marriage to Jason Alexander.

Spears's own Mercedes was impounded last week after she abandoned it on the road when it blew a tire, but this trip to the dealer was for Ghalib, her constant companion since her meltdown.

"They came in to get an estimate for a new car for him," a sales associate says. "He drives a rental car now. ... He was looking into the different lease and purchase options for sport cars."

By the time they started talking business, Spears had covered up with a trench coat, the sales person says.

"She didn't talk at all and it didn't seem like she was getting the car for him," the sales associate says.

Britney Arrives at Courthouse – Then Leaves

MONDAY JANUARY 14, 2008 04:25 PM EST

MONDAY JANUARY 14, 2008 05:40 PM EST UPDATED

By Ken Lee and Howard Breuer

In a chaotic scene, Britney Spears arrived at her child-custody hearing Monday – but left the courthouse after paparazzi surrounded her.

"I'm scared. I want to get in the car. I'm going in the car," she said after stepping out of the car as photographers crowded around her.

Spears, 26, then got back in the car. Police tried to coax her out, but she slammed her back against the seat and shouted, "No!"

Spears's car eventually drove off, and she didn't make it to the afternoon session of the hearing.

The troubled pop singer stayed home during the hearing's morning session, which ex-husband Kevin Federline, 29, attended.

Spears was not legally required to go, and she originally had "no plans" to do so, according to a source. But another source said her legal team "strongly advised" her to attend, and by the lunch break her lawyer said he was "hopeful" she'd show in the afternoon.

About 1:15 p.m., her car arrived at the courthouse. In a confusing sequence of events, the car at one point pulled into the garage, and at another point Spears got out for a few seconds, when she said she was scared and got back in. The car also was seen driving around the block, and at least once it pulled up to the curb, was met by photographers, and drove away.

The court hearing is focusing on Spears's four-hour Jan. 3 standoff with police, firefighters and paramedics at her Studio City home. Events that evening resulted in Spears being hospitalized at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Federline currently retains sole legal and physical custody of the couple's two sons, Preston, 2, and Jayden, 1. Spears was stripped of all visitation rights following her hospitalization.

Speaking of Britney news, here's some now:

The Epic Battle Between Britney and the Courtroom Continues

2wr1yso.jpg

Britney actually made it to court today. High-five!

Who cares if she didn't make it into the actual courtroom? Last time she never even made it out of the parking lot. But today she actually bypassed the paparazzi entirely by going underground. (Hmmm, we're really starting to wonder if the elaborate underground tunnel rumors are true.)

It's definitely a marked improvement...though, not improvement enough to get her visitation back.

But by the next emergency court date, we have total faith Brit will at least get far enough into the building to look the beast in the eye. And the emergency court date after that? She'll totally slay it. Remember how many depos it took to finally get her to stay for a significant amount of time?

Until then, all we can do is ponder why, oh why, Brit just can't force herself into a courtroom.

Britney's Rocky Reunion with Her Mother

Lynne and Britney Spears

Britney Spears is having some family bonding time with her mom – but the pair have been seen arguing, according to sources.

Lynne Spears, who arrived in Los Angeles Monday, accompanied her 26-year-old daughter and pal Sam Lutfi to a Mercedes Benz dealership in Beverly Hills Tuesday morning – but it was not exactly a happy family outing.

"Lynne and Britney were arguing in the car the whole time. They're both upset and arguing, not having a good time at all," an onlooker tells PEOPLE.

After 15 minutes at the dealership, Britney drove a black Escalade off the lot. "After she came out, she pulled over to the side of the road to argue with her mom more," adds the onlooker.

The previous night, Lynne had visited her daughter's home, but then was left to pace around the house after Britney left the house to meet Adnan Ghalib.

“Lynne, at one point said, 'I just want to give her a hug. I'm very worried," says a source. "Lynne was so nervous and worried, she just kept asking how they could get her daughter back home."

When the pop star did return home, Lynne, Britney and several friends including, Alli Sims and Sam Lutfi, had a "family bonding session over a lot of things," says the source.

But the family time does not seem to have changed Britney's behavior. On Tuesday afternoon, she and Lutfi visited a nearby J. Crew, where an onlooker described her as "totally out of it."

"She was talking in a slight accent. It was a little of a British accent," says the eyewitness. "She kept to herself, quiet, she just wanted to go. She really wanted some Bubblelicious gum and she kept asking Sam for it and got frustrated when he didn't have any. Her mood lifted when she found some in her bag."
