There's a lot to like about Coldplay: the sound, the lyrics, the humor. Still not convinced? Here are 10 reasons Coldplay rules.

On the heels of its third multiplatinum album (which happens to be its third release overall), Coldplay is one of the biggest bands in the world at the moment. The band, fronted by Chris Martin, has had a solid fan base since its debut, Parachutes, was released in 2000. Next came A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002) and most recently X&Y in June.

 

But while the British foursome have devoted followers around the world, many others despise the group. The New York Times recently said Coldplay was "the most insufferable band of the decade." How is it possible for there to be so much controversy over one band?

 

I can't really answer that question. But I know Coldplay is absolutely spectacular. In honor of their upcoming concert Wednesday at the Ford Amphitheatre in Tampa, I have compiled a list of 10 reasons why I think Coldplay is currently the greatest band:

 

10. There is more than one person in the band. If you only know one thing about Coldplay, it's most likely that Chris Martin is their pianist and singer. While he may get the most publicity, there are three other talented musicians in the group: Guy Berryman on bass guitar, Jonny Buckland on lead guitar and Will Champion on drums.

 

9. Oh, yeah, Gwyneth Paltrow. Martin is married to the Oscar-winning actor. Could there be a more talented couple? When you mix a movie star and a musician, imagine the gene pool for their children. (See reason No. 7!)

 

8. The band members are aware of the world around them. In the tradition of globally aware rock stars, like Bono of U2, the members of Coldplay are involved in the Make Trade Fair organization, which works to eliminate trade barriers in poor countries in order to help reduce and eventually eliminate poverty. Ever seen the pen mark on Chris Martin's hand? That's an equal sign to represent Make Trade Fair.

 

7. Apple, Martin and Paltrow's daughter. Could fatherhood be the reason that Martin stays grounded? Besides that, she looked adorable wearing those bright pink ear covers at Live 8.

 

6. A healthy sense of humor. It's not all serious when it comes to Coldplay. For instance, they made a video in honor of Apple's birth. It features Martin rapping about cleaning up diapers with the band wearing wigs.

 

5. They are their own best and worst critics. One minute the band might be saying they are the best band on the planet. The next they could be saying that when they listen to Nelly, they wonder why they can't be that good.

 

4. Did I mention the music? The music of Coldplay has a unique sound. Check out the Music Quiz on your iPod and you can clearly tell if a song is Coldplay. The vocals are haunting. The guitars are catchy, while still being original. The piano is played with such skill and precision. Trust me, their songs will get stuck in your head.

 

3. Lyrics. Although Martin may not think his lyrics are worthy to be in the liner notes, I think they are. They are insightful and full of emotion. The lyrics can touch you on a personal level and still reach half the world. One such example is in Fix You: "When the tears come streaming down your face, when you lose something you can't replace, when you love someone but it goes to waste, could it be worse?"

 

2. The B-sides. What is a B-side? When music used to come on vinyl records, there was always the other side of the hit single. That other side is the B-side. The Coldplay B-side songs are absolutely amazing, even if they weren't originally released. One amazing B-side is Things I Don't Understand. It asks, "How to avoid defeat, where truth and fiction meet, why nothing ever turns out as you plan, these are things that I don't understand."

 

1. They are Coldplay! Need I say more? Of course, you could always blame my Twisted Logic (featured on X&Y) on A Rush of Blood to the Head (the group's second album).

very good stuff. I personally agree with reason #2, you can tell a band is good when they have b-sides that are amazing. If the band would have released their b-sides on the orignal albums then i feel coldplay would have alot more fans than they already have. :)

I agree with all 10 reasons :)

But the most important is #3. I think so ;)

Erm....Coldplay rule because he has a Daughter, there is more than one person in the band and he`s married to Gwenyth? What? C`mon, what kind of reasons are they?

 

Lryics? Please, the lryics on X & Y really could be alot better.

 

There are also alot of other bands whose every album has gone multi-platinum and who have done alot more albums, so that`s a pants reason too.

 

A fanboy list if ever I saw one.

 

A good band, without a doubt, for most of the reasons listed? Not a chance.

X&Y????, you are right, the first reasons are a little off, but the first five, isnt that the reason you love them:

5)sense of humor, thy're their own critics...

4)amazing music

3)lyrics(very emotional)

2) all of their music is good, even their b-sides

1)because they're coldplay! :P

Most of these reasons have absolutely nothing to do with the actual anthems themselves. :/ And who the hell puts "amazing music" at number 4???

Sometimes i think that people think way too deeply into the reasons why people like Coldplay.

If you know that you love Coldplay and you are a genuine fan, most of this talk doesnt even really matter that much. All i know is that I love Coldplay and that everything they stand for, and everything they do honestly makes me happier than any other music i've ever listened to. If i listen to Coldplay before i go to sleep, i literally go to sleep with a smile on my face. To me, thats all that matters. x

Hey why don't we do a list like this for the Beatles, or U2? And let's put 100 reasons for them, cuz they're ten times better.

There are MANY MANY MANY reason's why coldplay are so great...and there are 10...i think CFU should make a longer list with all the reasons on it...thast might be fun...or really boring, either way :confused: :P

We could all try...i can think of many at the mo cause i well tierd, but ill try to write some down and post them in the next couple of days...and everyone else could do their own, we could make it our own top 10 of why we each love coldplay.

yeah same here, there are sooo many reasons!!! might take me a while but im definatly going to do it!!! :D

i can think of a million reasons why coldplay is so good. sure there are other bands like u2 and the beatles which could even be better than them, but coldplay is my band and i love them.... they're just... ***trying to find words***

ermmm....... :confused: :confused:! pretty much what i wrote in my 2nd post of this thread is close to explaining how i feel about them.....i could go on for days.

everyday i think of something new of why i love listening to them, but some days there is nothing, i just play their stuff and there are no words..just a happy feeling within where i feel all is right with the world.

no you dont, thats exactly how i feel. no other music i've ever listened to makes me feel truly happy like Coldplay does... :)

Yeah..there is no-one quite like them. But there are alot of bands that i love, but coldplay i can listen to any time and in any mood...where as others i have to feel like listening to them :confused: :D
