Amanda, you are asking the wrong people, lol. I don't know why they call them bootleg honey, sorry

any unauthorized version of copyrighted material is considered a "bootleg" but with music it usually refers to unauthorized live recordings.

speaking of bootlegs - ill sort out an mp3 collection list for u tonight Ian :)

Well, to be a complete geek here... i read through this and was interested in the term's origin so did a little search and found:

the first use of the phrase in the Omaha (Nebraska, USA) Herald in 1889:

There is as much whisky consumed in Iowa now as there was before..."for medical purposes only," and on the boot-leg plan.

A bootleg refers to the long leather boots worn by cowboys in the Old West. They were used to store all manner of illicit goods, including an extra gun, a bowie knife, or a flask of moonshine.

then i read a few more links and saw that Tom said is correct and that according to "international law" (people are gonna think i'm fbi now :o ) it is illegal to sell them but yet legal to own them :-o :-o so then?... I guess we're all ok then downloading these things as there's no selling involved...no one I know's ever got busted buying anyways :D I doubt it's ever enforced..far more severe crimes being committed out there!

it's a bootleg if you gain all the profits. if the band or record company make no money of the selling of a cd. it's a bootleg. that's how i've always thought of it! lol.
