Ambivalence.

Featured Replies

Well..........

hehe....

It all began with this german class-test woe took a year ago......

The question was:

"Prove the ambivalence of Galileo Galilei in the novella by Berthold Brecht!"

We all asked

What is ambivalence?

And it was the first time I've heard that word......

I thought somehow this word is funny....

And some weeks ago I found out that I AM ambivalent in my opinion....

Maybe this thread is similar to Reilly's Two-faces thread, but i don't think it is the same....

Yeah you have maybe two faces when you are ambivalent.....

and I definitely have...

I mean I have almost everytime two opinions about one situation....

Like an "on the one hand,on the other hand-scheme"!

last time I realised it was at Karneval......

I always said this year that I hated it and that I'm happy when it's over....

but then Kanreval began and I took part in it and I said it is funny etc.....

I was a little bit sad when it was over.....

But now when I see it on TV again...I think Oh God I hate it......

It happens so often to me......

I have a topic and say I think like X or y about it......

and then maybe 5 minutes later somebody gives another argument for liking or disliking it and then I get unsure.....

suddenly I'm another opinion......but still the same opinion as before.-...

it really confuses me.....

sometimes it is really hard for me to take part in a controversal discussion.....because I am convinced by other opinions really fast,I do often not know how to think about something in a straight way etc......

I'm always torn between opinions......

and ambivalence is not being torn between situations.....that you maybe can't decide between this dress or that dress.......

no....I think it is like I said.....like almost never knowing what to think about a situation because of being "torn"

Maybe I'm totally wrong with it......and I understand this whole thing in the wrong way....

don't know......

This is so true with me!

Especially lately, I'm just constantly neutral. But a term for neutral would be "Sitting on the fence", I'm not sitting on the fence, I'm constantly hopping over it back and forth to see both sides of things.

I swear, sometimes when it comes to factors like politics or religion, I could sit there and argue myself in my mind, all day long

God...my whole life could be summed up with that one word. That and procrastination.

We all asked

:blank:

Read the rest of the post, its pretty clear.

Definitely the same here.......

Especially about religion.....I always say to those people who can't accept people who are religious that having a religion isn't bad,and that they sghould accept it......and that I believe in God etc.....

but a friend of mine (who is let's say "anti-religious") asks me so often the question:

Why are you religious?

And damn......I don't find convincing arguments then.....it really pisses me....

Maybe people could think that I don#t stand my opinion in being like that......and that I just behave like everyone wants me to behave in particualr situations!

Man.............I think I sometimes don't know how to behave because of it.....

because I'm always torn.......

Lately I find myself trying to numb my mind of opinions because I get carried away and dont know where to stand.

It results in people thinking that I am not opinionated and a bit un-interesting on more important topics, which is why they are surprised when every now and then they find out I actually have too many opinions to confine them to one conversation.

am·biv·a·lence (ăm-bĭv'ə-ləns)

n.

  1. The coexistence of opposing attitudes or feelings, such as love and hate, toward a person, object, or idea.
  2. Uncertainty or indecisiveness as to which course to follow.

hah! I thought it was something different... I thought ambivalence was like... being oblivious... anyway... Julia, I guess you are ambivalent. I always thought you meant something else by that. I think you're also equally obsessed with this word as I am with the letter z

ha! this is how I feel when we discuss something in school or well...not just in school, almost always when I try to take part in a discussion...it's really annoying to be so easely affected by peoples' different opinions. It's like I don't have an opinion of my own and just do or say what other everyone else does or says...grrrr

DITTO!And it is getting on my nerves...I don't want to be ifnluenced so easily....although sometimes it is good to be influenced a bit...

yes, to be ifluenced a little bit is just fine by me, but I want to be able to control it myself and decide when I want that to happen....i you know what I mean

it's good with you julia, because we have the same thoughts about a lot of stuff here on the board...or at least I recognize myself in a lot of what you say hehe
