[X&Y] World's Biggest Album For Coldplay

Featured Replies

Coldplay's growing domination of the global music market was confirmed today after the announcement that their latest album, X&Y, was the bestseller in 2005.

The British band, fronted by Chris Martin, have recently made a major breakthrough in the US, and already claimed the biggest selling digital album of the year award across the Atlantic.

They have also led a British revival in America, with artists such as former army officer James Blunt following in their footsteps.

When X&Y was released last June it became the first album to simultaneously top both the British and US album charts since the Beatles did in 2000 with their collection of greatest hits, One.

In total, Coldplay sold more than eight million copies of their third album in 2005, beating Mariah Carey's album The Emancipation of Mimi into second place.

Commenting on Coldplay's success, Alain Levy, the chairman and chief executive of their record label, EMI, said: "This is a huge achievement for Coldplay.

"They have developed long-term global success over the course of a number of albums, and I’m sure that they will continue to build their career for many years to come."

There was further good news for British acts as both Blunt and Robbie Williams also featured in the International Federation of Phonographic Industries' (IFPI) top ten selling albums.

Blunt had the ninth biggest hit, with his debut album Back to Bedlam, while former Take That singer Williams was in tenth with Intensive Care.

US rapper 50 Cent was third with The Massacre, the Black Eyed Peas were fourth with Monkey Business and Green Day's American Idiot came in fifth.

X&Y is too commercial, A Rush Of Blood deserved more

I kinda agree radioactive_coldplayer....although its fantastic news and X&Y was good enough, I hope they dont get too big and forget the kind of music that made them in the first place...AROBTTH is the best album imo.

^kinda true, although I really love x&y.

great news! :)

EXACTLY!

I am mildly amused by statements like this because when Rush came out everyone HATED it. Said the band was dead and how they sold out because it was nothing like Parachutes and blah blah blah.
FINALLY! Coldplay beat Green Day to something :smug:

:D

but considering their album was released in 2004 they sold a lot in 2005 too :stunned:

And everyone kept saying how Mariah Carey had the best year... Go Coldplay!

Very true Iriden.. Green Day probably had the best sales in 2004. I'm actually a bit amazed U2 isn't on that list.

Hah, seriously! It's like a cycle. I'm sure when the fourth album comes out, people will say how it's not like X&Y or not like this or it's too much of that and not enough of whatever else.

Very annoying. X&Y is whole lot more popular than it is commercial.

Hooray for Coldplay! :D :D :D

really? well that just shows it then! whatevr they do someone along the line will slate it endlessly

Great news! Congrats to the guys!

Considering X&Y was only out for half the year' date=' those are amazing sales.[/quote']

oh yah i totally forgot about that! good for them! im glad they topped stupid mariah carey, everyone just kept talking about her "comeback" and look now! haha

because AROBTTH was a "depressing" album, at least they said it...but don't forget how many prizes did they get for A Rush. x&y is easy to listen to,it's a bit poppy and it sounds like u2 and everything else in some songs.

i still firmlly stick by Parachutes, not for any other reason other than i like it...i jut love that album, but i also love the other two, but yes x&y does sound 'safe'...if you know what i mean

Woo! Congrats Coldplay!

I'm also surprised U2 wasn't on there...or Kanye West's Late Registration, considering Gold Digger was so huge.

whatev   hows x&y safe when everybody is always moaning about it being so different or whatever..

congratulations to them! and to us for buying it :smug:
