Captain

Anybody like them? I caught them on the Carling 24 thing on Channel 4 last week and they were in Portsmouth and I recognised a few places they played. They supported Kaiser Chiefs for the Carling thing. I think they sound pretty good. Worth a listen!

Captain – the more respectable Keane

Who's Next? As a certain legendary band once asked. We seek to delve into the music industry and come up with a bountiful collection of stars to be. Or is that just wannabes?

This week it's the turn of the Keane it's ok to like, Captain.

Captain's music is enveloped in melancholy, shrouded in pensive pop and performed with a heavy-hearted octave. However, songs like Glorious and Frontline have jettisoned this London five-piece into a notable degree of success. Tours supporting the kings of gloom – Keane – and your mum's favourite band – The Feeling – have earned them a rightful level of recognition.

Broke – considered by some to be their seminal single – has received a similar level of both radio play and critical acclaim. The song boasts an infectious melody and competent vocal from a number of band members. This is perhaps the first instantly noticeable element of Captain, the band's basic influence of 80s pop music is trumped by the song's drawing upon an eclectic mix of musical styles.

The same could be said for the lyrics and the basic tunes, with the instantly likeable pop of Broke contrasting with the folksy ramblings of Summer Rain. Rik Flynn's raucous vocal on Glorious sets the band out apart as being genuinely capable of producing interesting songs.

A number of bands that attempt to fall effortlessly into the wake of rueful guitar pop ploughed by Coldplay, often fall flat on their faces. You only have to look back at a number of the bands that have supported these subdued giants of pop music to see how many have tried and failed to emulate the work of others.

Captain have managed to avoid this sticky trap by being just a little too quirky to be pigeon-holed by people who buy Now music collections. This Is Hazelville, the band's debut album, is a great record with a number of mighty and unique hits. There's definitely a hole in the music landscape for Captain to fill, and they've stepped up admirably.

Captain's new single, Frontline, is released on November 13th on EMI

The band's debut album This Is Hazelville is out now.

Me and Steph kinda caught them at the Keane gig, personally I found it a little dreary....but I didnt listen to them that attentively. Perhaps I should give em more of a chance.
