U.S. Army charges 3 soldiers in Iraq deaths

Troops allegedly violated codes when 3 detainees died in military custody

The Associated Press

Updated: 3:45 p.m. ET June 19, 2006

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The U.S. Army has charged three soldiers in connection with the deaths of three Iraqis who were in military custody in northern Iraq last month, the military said Monday.

The Multinational Corps-Iraq said three members of 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division have been charged in connection with the deaths of three male detainees during an operation near Thar Thar Canal in northern Salahuddin province on May 9.

“A noncommissioned officer and two soldiers each have been charged with violating several articles of the Uniform Code of Military Justice including murder, attempted murder, conspiracy, communicating a threat, and obstructing justice,” an announcement said.

It added that “on the day the alleged murders occurred, the unit commander ordered an inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the three detainees.”

It said that a criminal investigation began May 17 and was ongoing.

“The soldiers are currently in pre-trial confinement awaiting an Article 32 hearing to determine if sufficient evidence exists for the case to be referred to court-martial,” the announcement said

Once charged, defendants have the right to an Article 32 hearing, the military equivalent of a grand jury investigation.

Last week, the Army said it had opened a criminal investigation into the suspicious deaths of three men in military custody in Iraq.

The investigation was requested by Lt. Gen. Peter W. Chiarelli, commander of multinational forces in Iraq, who acted after other soldiers raised suspicions about the deaths.

rare?? you think so, huh.......

I think this particular time they are doing something about it because the Military doesn't look so hot in the eyes of many Americans and the rest of the world. If we show everyone that these 'bad soldiers' are being punished... then it gives the sign to the rest of the world that 'we don't agree with it either'.. even though all signs show that these soldiers were just acting out on orders....

this means shit to me....

If I lived in the U.S. I'd make some people to join me and protest in front of the white house with a huge banner with something like this written:

"George W. Bush to trial for crimes against Humanity" for promoting a senseless war, casing so far destruction and thousands of deaths.

Its incredible how people in teh U.S. though in majority is against the president regime and the war in Iraq do not raise their voice to show that American people have more will and the most power of decision over a dumb leader who acts just by convenience.

Uh..... whats sad is that you don't believe this to be true, Nick..... My dad was in Nam... he says its not uncommon for the gov't to do these types of games...

if you think its ok for this to happen..... soldiers being given orders to break rules and stuff... then I think you're the sad one to think its perfect;y acceptable.

Its obvious many more of crimes like this happen everyday in Iraq... they're just not reported... us, confortable in our sits just can perceive a bit of the huge horror the Iraquis have to live with.

amen to that! I don't know why 'some people' seem to think that these crimes are ok just because we're at war...... its war, yes... but innocent civilians shouldn't have to pay the price for the actions of terrorists.

No to mention the trauma these soldiers are now faced with.... its tragedy all around.

Exactly... everyone is affected... that's what war brings to people, pain, hate, fear! nothing good.

And still fucking crazy shameless U.S. justice minister and the President Bush goes on conference to JUSTIFY war... how can war be justified? is stupid!

I think U.S. is not only bad at geography... WHAT ABOUT HISTORY?? Did the president Bush ever learn something about World War I and II_?

Yes because he should pay for the crimes of 3 fools. so what next? if a u.s. citizen commits a crime in the u.s. we should protest to him too?

because many not all but many americans realise the war is not evil, they may be against it but they know they would only hurt america and iraq too be fools about it. but as these forums show their are exceptions to every thing.

I think U.S. is not only bad at geography... WHAT ABOUT HISTORY?? Did the president Bush ever learn something about World War I and II_?

Yeah, not to burry your head in teh sand and wait for the enemy to get too strong?? did europe learna damn thing from the bloodiest war ever? one of the biggest thing many americans have learned is looking the other way and doing nothing ONLY causes more trouble in the end. something most of the world is yet to realize. even after 2 of the bloodiest wars happened partly because of that.

These things do not happen very often, and when they do happen the new jumps ALL over it. these type of things are very rare, but in any war no matter how much a army tries to play by the rules, the rules will be broken sometimes. you cannot judge a whole military for the actions of a few. just like it is wrong to judge a race on the actions of a few. its ignorant.

you ask about america knowing about history. its quite obvious you do not. because you would know that war does in some cases solve problems and make things better.

war can be justified, like ww2, the allies WERE justified to fight hitler......throughout human history there has been just reason for war. you do not seem to understand human history.

the tragedy in Haiditha was against civilians.. but this this article isn't about Haiditha.....

these guys admitted they broke the rules...... but what you have to see is thru the lines... they were ordered to break the rules.. and then admit that they knowingly did... ergo, they're guilty.

this isn't uncommon for the military to tell soldiers to do this sort of thing. No one currently in the military will admit to this.. but speak to some Vets.. they may tell you different. My dad did.

so your dad speaks for all vets? your statement about our soldiers is horseshit. 99.9% of our soldiers are greater people than any of you anti-americans could ever hope to be. the U.S. armed forces have liberated more people from tyranny than anyone else in the history of mankind. to all those overseas, it is pathetic that you buy into all the anti-american sentiment just because it is the hip thing to do. thank God the U.S. calls the shots in our world. No one could do it better.

This makes me unpatriotic??? I can support the troops and not support the war........ how can I not support them!

You are. by your actions and words. thats how we are able to say such a thing. you are a disgrace to our nation and EVERY soldier who has died. you are NO better then those who say all black people smoke weed, or all mexicans are lazy, or all jews have big noses. you label the whole military for the actions of a few just like an ignorant person. when many men have died in this war BECAUSE they were following the rules of war. we could have broke them and suffered far less dead. you sicken me.

Let me tell you something...

I will never discuss politics again with you.. yea, I could choose to PM this to you.. but I want everyone to see what a little prick you really are.

YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO JUDGE ME, MY FATHER WHO FAUGHT FOR THSI COUNTRY WHEN HE WASN'T EVEN A CITIZEN!!! SUPPORTING THE TROOPS AND SUPPORTING THE WAR ARE TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT THINGS....

Most of those soldiers don't even know what they are fighting for over there.. hence the reason they 'wig out' and shoot innocent people.... I'm not saying that this is an everyday occurance... but IT DOES HAPPEN. Are you there to tell me doesn't? Am I there to say it does? NO! Neither of us are there...and one thing we ALL need to remember is that we hear and read only the headlines and stories that get to us. I am sure there are plenty of stories of good that we NEVER hear... why? Because its all propaganda.... good news or bad news.... WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO REALIZE THAT.

I do support the troops... I have close friends who are there right now.. and serve their country proudly.... how can anyone not commend that? I know from first hand experience and how my dad felt when he came home.. it hurt. This is why I was taught to support the ones who fight for us, and our freedom... BUT THIS IS NOT THE AGENDA OF THIS WAR!!!

I support the war once... for about a year after 9/11.... then the 'story' changed... and so did my faith in this administration..... I LOVE MY COUNTRY... I just hate my government. The country and the government aren't the same thing.....

You have seriously offended me with your derogatory comments... and in NO WAY do my comments implicate such stereotypical attributes as the ones you have posted. Lets not forget YOU are the one who stated you were racist some time ago when you said all the African-American kids in YOUR school were lazy.........

thats not being prejudice?

Now back to the topic..... or I'll be forced to trash this thread.....

"or I'll be forced to trash this thread....."

that's where it belongs...

Prick? you're the sad person who hates your country and disgraces it because of the actions of a few and brings down all the men and women fighting because of a few bad men. its truly sad. you'd get along with alqeada you could chat about how evil america and our soldiers are. its a shame we have people like you in this nation. atleast our "Evil" soldiers are willing to still fight and die for people like you.

you love your country? then why does every word you speak talk shit about it? you do not love our nation, your actions and words prove otherwise.

in a report on CNN last night, one of the soldiers claims he was just 'carrying out orders'..... they all have legal representation.... but the Marine Corp. looks like they want to set an example of these guys..
