Here're a question for discussion today

Do agree with all those society-improvement groups and GLAAD and soon for blaming musicans such as Emenim and Marilyn Manson for violence and the shitty state of society and tteenage minds, etc.?

um.....in a way yes.....in another way no

l think everyone should blame themselves...not othes...cuz when it comes down to it...everyone is responsible for their OWN actions....and can't blame it on someone else ALL the time you know?? in the end its your mind and your body

i do find many recording artists today like to exploit certain areas of 'teenage angst' which is a recipe for disaster. for example- many 'nu-metal' bands exploit their apparent 'emotional problems' which give young impressionable kids the idea that it's cool to be fucked up. 13 year old nirvana fans- if you don't hate yourself and want to die, you can't be like kurt. however, it's not that this is necessarily fault of the artists. cobain had serious problems- and if he hadn't confronted demons and opened his soul on record, his band wouldn't have been one of the most important ever to grace the earth.

i think this is largely to do with immaturity of the masses rather than fault of the artists, but what can we do about that?

it's a tough one to call... when you see kids killing themselves quoting papa roach in the note... it's quite disturbing.

vinita is right though, everyone is responsible for their actions. besides, one band alone is not enough to inspire a massacre.

thanks :)

anyone disagree, have any points to raise? tis an interesting debate...

AWW Phil...who can say it better????

although i agree with Phil about artists plugging teen angst for money, i also disagree, for a lot of it is real...

also, you mention nirvana because Kurt wrote how he felt, but you mention how artist plug..it's a paradox in a way...as i said, some artists do plug, some don't

I however believe that no matter what people sing and write about, as a human being you have something called FREE WILL, which means the ability to choose, the ability to do as we please.

We are not puppets, words in a song or poem do not dictate what we say/think and do. It's merely to entertain, and at best to help us understand perhaps ourselves.

Besides, if musicians are to blame, then aren't films, tv programs computer games etc?

Soaps often have killings, underage sex, affairs, suicide and rape, in an effort to boost ratings, do people go off and do as they see?

No! and, ok some claim to be influenced, but lets be honest, if they are, then they weren't really in the correct frame of mind and would have done so eventually anyway.

It's not monkey see monkey do, this is just a way to try to make some people believe that the problem is recent, when in actual fact there have been no real increase in suicide rates. It's an old problem, dating back before records were kept.

As for people quoting songs in notes, well sometimes it's easier to quote than to say how you feel, it's also easy to relate to.

i'd also like to add, cos if i edit people will miss it due to reading my earlier post, that a lot of the time people are suicidal due to chemical imbalancies in the brain and so pickup on any silly little thing they can.

It's not immaturity as such, although the highest age risk are teenagers..but then bearing in mind it's to do with chemical inbalancies, and then you remember puberty...it links.

We also know how cruel kids can be, with all this, and a lack of interest in how people are in todays society, always being told how you should look, and with chemicals messing with you, it can be too much for some to handle...a lt of the time artists are just what they used to relax, think about, vent with...

ahh splendid people..Phil I def. agree with you..and you to Mr.Bond..

see I had a four convo. ..about this today...

I do thinnk that some lyrics are not heathly ..but I do believe that parents need to now what their children are getting into

My folks told me that they like rap and rock but the spent the time to explain certain things to me and to figure out my I listen to what I do..and I dont go around stabbing people because slim shady said so

SOme kids are ridiculous and need proper guidance and smarten up.

I think these groups need to talk to parents also not just the artist..and if gays are persecuted because of slim shady..then why arent jayz and nelly and p.diddy being cursed because of how they sing about women..

I think society have bigger fish to fry than to rant about someone guy who's singing about what we all think about in the back our minds but he has the money to do it...

alot films and shit are more influencial that some rock and rap songs..

now I know that some artists make a special effort to explain to their fans to not take so seriously and if fans dont want tolisten well let them go think 9 inch nails through their eyes and see what happens...

Parents can be oppresive bastards, who put things down before they can truly understand it on any level. My father isnt like this, he hears me listening to the darkest of Radiohead songs and he just thinks "Oh well, thats his thing, I listen to my thing, we're the same in the end..." My mother isnt as much like that.

There is only one way to gaurantee your child wont end up being stupid enough to be persuaded to do something by listening to a song, by letting them have the freedom to express themself as well as making them realise that different people have different stories for their life, some people talk about suicide, others talk about busting caps and hoe's. These stories should make you think obviously, but not act. No-matter what music you listen to you should remain to be yourself, whatever that is. Parents should make that clearer.

Heres the deal with parents and nu-metal, they just dont mix. And it makes the situation much worse because if a parent shouts at a kid for listening to rebellious music do you really think the kids going to stop? Youre very naive if you think they will. They'll go all "You dont understand me!" and run off into their room and blast some Papa Roach. Just like the videos, yeah? How Hollywood is that eh?

Its all mis-understanding and mis-interpretations that have lead to conflicts. The point of writing about being depressed is so you can confide with another person if you feel the same way, and then its about understanding them.

oh no....... long posts... :? :D :D

i think a child should always be able to express themselves in whatever way bc i know i used to get maaaaaaaad :-x at my parents for not letting me listen to stuff. the thing i hate tho and the thing that isnt right is for parents to get all hot and bothered over the smallest thing in music, i mean if u were listening to radiohead and ur parents got mad because of some stupid thing thats not fair bc you could be listening to horrible stuff. the thing that bothers me is my parents wont even take time to appreciate good music, no i dont in any way expect them to like what i like. i agree 100% w/ what Reilly said:"There is only one way to gaurantee your child wont end up being stupid enough to be persuaded to do something by listening to a song, by letting them have the freedom to express themself as well as making them realise that different people have different stories for their life, some people talk about suicide, others talk about busting caps and hoe's. These stories should make you think obviously, but not act. No-matter what music you listen to you should remain to be yourself, whatever that is. Parents should make that clearer. " i wish my parents had always just given me the freedom to be myself and like whatever i like bc alot of it was just a stage anyway. i think everyone just needs to be themselves in what they like and no one should be able to take away what u liek from u bc thats the most horrible feeling in the world.
