[Enough Rope] Coldplay Not Music To Martin's Ears

Featured Replies

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin reckons he can't bear listening to the band's first album Parachutes.

In an interview with Andrew Denton for Enough Rope the singer from one of the world's bigest bands revealed that and some other gems. "Think if I ever get married again I might put it on to impress someone but I can't imagine that ever happening."

Martin reasons that nothing can be learnt by listening to one's own music so he tries to constantly listen to other artists' efforts. You can catch Andrew Denton's entire interview with Chris Martin on Enough Rope on the ABC tonight at 9:35pm.

so no songs like High Speed, Spies, Sparks or Trouble in the future?

that would be a disaster. Coldplay should back to their real style

I hope someone is ripping this.

Im watching it now, its funny as, Chris and Andrew wrote a song.

Oh what a shame, Parachutes is my favourite.. Can't imagine my favourite singer hating my favourite album :P

Well, I can understand that.. It sounds very different to the stuff they're doing now and I don't know any artist who can bear listening to his old stuff.. Although, I can understand it when the guys say they don't wanna listen to "Ode to Deodorant anymore", but Parachutes? Guys, you miss something ;)

I like all 3 records very much but Parachutes is definitely my favourite!

Anyway, thanks for the link! :)

This is a good thing.. why would he listen to their own stuff to get inspiration? I don't think any artist does that. And I guess I'll never understand why folks like listening to recycled versions of old songs. I get the feeling it's something people say but actually hate.. I remember when SoS came out, most complained because it almost has the same exact chord progression as Clocks.

Parachutes is long gone and over with, I'd prefer them to move on and bring something else to the table. Who wants a band to just sit there make the same type of music over and over? Not me. :freak:

But how can you know where you're going if you don't know where you've been. I write stories, not songs, but as painful as it can be, I like looking back at my old stuff not for inspiration but to understand where I am and how to be different in the future.

Sometimes looking back can be a revelation.

Definitely, I get that.. but thinking in terms of an established, popular band.. would they really need to listen to the record just to know where they've been? They have toured that album since it was released, it's fair to say they know every chord of what's in it already...or no?

Either way I'm not saying they shouldn't listen to the album at all.. but if they're looking for inspiration, Parachutes certainly isn't going to help them come back with new music, that's for sure.

This was a very good interview I must say.

it was a really good interview chris is great and how he went on about the characteristics of someone who loves coldplay that was great

Exactly. I mean... where the hell would The Beatles have gone if they kept hanging on to their first album? Or ANY band that push the boundaries of music for that matter?

Coldplay haven't forgotten their old stuff. Of course not. That's why they're not falling back on old tricks.

i agree with that. but sometimes i just want to slap him and say 'chris you made good music. stop it.' :P

Aww thanks for posting! =)

I love the fact that they love to NOT brag about all the stuff they have. That's one thing I can't stand about American artists.

hahah this was the besssssttt interview ever, it was just great. had me laughing the whole time. :nice: he's such a funny guy in interviews, always witty and charming.

X & Y is one of the best albums anyone has made in years. I cant understand why everyone rags on it so much. :(

If Coldplay were to make the same music over and over, we'd get get v bored v fast, and you guys would be complaining about that instead.

I can only think of 5 or 6 albums in the past decade that come close to matching it, and of those, one is ROBTTH.

very good interview i must agree

im looking foward to seeing what sort of direction they will take next, after all.. jonny, will and guy have to play it :P

I think if X&Y had been their debut everyone would rave about it. That is assuming you know...the 'coldplay sound' hadn't been made popular yet.

People rag on them now because they are so popular and when something is popular they call it mainstream...and when something is mainstream a lot of people think it looses credibility. I think that's all bullshit.

I love the album.

I love all 3 albums...and I honestly don't get why so many bands get critiqued based on whether or not they have 'the Coldplay sound'. Sure, all 3 albums have the piano, and Chris's unique vocal style...but musically, and in their production values, all 3 are completely different! All four members have evolved as musicians and have had more access to better facilities as time has progressed. And i produce music, so I'm not spouting crap for the sake of an opinionated post...if that sounded aggressive, it wasn't ment to!!!

I still listen to my old music, and admittedly, I'm not very fond of my live CD, but it gives me ideas for how I might treat those same songs in the studio. There are one or two songs I've done recently that absolutely inspire me, but it's only becausse with time, I've finally learned to find my own sound...They remind me how far I've come...but I'd still rather listen to other ppl's music...obviously.

Anyway, this is about coldplay, not me...lol. I can see why Chris wouldn't make a habit of putting on his own material, but that album changed alot of what was going on in music in 2000, and I hope Chris isn't too modest to realise that!!!

Can someone please explain what "Trappings" is??

CHRIS MARTIN: Because we were doing something for somebody and it's complicated. It's embarrassing, I don't like to say it.

ANDREW DENTON: No, come on, look, you seem very awkward about the...

CHRIS MARTIN: The trappings...

ANDREW DENTON: The trappings, but I think people understand that you have the trappings.

CHRIS MARTIN: Well sometimes we do. Yesterday we didn't, yesterday we didn't, but today, this time, we did. Do we have to talk about this?

He was looking very awkward. It was cute! Very funny interview! :)

i also love parachutes, i cant believe it!
