Rooney decision being made TODAY

Featured Replies

Today, the referee for the final was elected. It's going to be Horacio Elizondo who was the one sending off Rooney after a foul on Portuguese player Carvalho. No matter if it was on purpose or not, the fact that the FIFA chose this referee obviously doesn't mean a good thing when it comes to the decision what's going to happen with Rooney, don't you think?

The decision was supposed to be made earlier, but has been delayed to today. Rooney already isn't allowed to play in the first qualification game for the Euro 2008, but what else will happen?

ROO ROW REF IN FINAL INSULT

The Mirror, July 7, 2006

WAYNE ROONEY's red card ref was awarded the World Cup Final last night.

And that spells bad news for the England striker, with FIFA's vote of confidence for Argentine official Horacio Elizondo signposting a huge Euro 2008 ban.

The decision to give the 42-year-old part-time poet the France v Italy showdown in Berlin on Sunday night is a clear sign that Rooney will pay a huge price for his moment of madness against Portugal last Saturday.

Rooney has refused to apologise, despite the entreaties of senior members of the FA high command, with Soho Square's written submission to FIFA backing his view that his clash with Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho "didn't warrant a red card".

The Manchester United star remains convinced that Elizondo would not have sent him off were it not for the intervention of Old Trafford team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, who urged the referee to take action and provoked a mild push from Rooney under the nose of the official.

It had been anticipated that the verdict would be handed out yesterday, after the FA finally sent their response to FIFA.

They argued that Rooney had actually been the victim of a foul by Carvalho and that the contact was "unintentional" - despite Sven Goran Eriksson agreeing that his player deserved to see red.

Rooney's failure to say "sorry" seems likely to bring a ban even longer than the three games which had been the minimum expectation. As FIFA are seeking to clamp down on violent conduct, it could possibly five competitive matches which would wreck the start of Steve McClaren's England reign.

UEFA chief Lennart Johansson, chairman of the World Cup Organising Committee and senior vice-president of FIFA, made it clear that Elizondo got the call 100 per cent right.

Johansson said: "I watched the match and I had one opinion when I was in the stands and another when I saw it on television. But having seen it again, it was right to send Rooney off."

It would be horrible for England if Rooney couldn't play in so many games.. But well, we'll see what the FIFA decides.

O.o I didn't even know about the fact that he isn't allowed to play the first game in the euro cup!!

my god, that's scandalous!

we can't take a look in his brain and see if he did it on purpose ... !!!

That will be a huge loss for the England team.

True - but England are in an easy qualification group and will have a new manager and new captain.

It's a pity Cristiano Ronaldo can't get a ban for his persistent cheating and incitement - he deserves it.;)

Finding his brain should be fun enough

I think it's horrible.. To me, it still wasn't on purpose.. Just look at it, he didn't even take a look behind him, he had to take the balance, he had to put a foot on the ground, god damn it!

I would be devestated if he couldn't play in many games, I wanna see him when the Euro is in my country :(

Nope, it's the first game of the qualifition to Euro 2008.

Which shall be: England vs. Andorra on the 2nd september

oh, so it's okay...

naaah,it's not okay but it's not as bad as missing the first "official" game :)

Yeah that wouldn't be too bad, but he can be locked for up to 5 games!

Sepp Blatter is a prick. No one else could suggest the use of two referees :dozey:

Here's a very good new article, quoting Owen who's criticising former coach Eriksson:

Eriksson sent Rooney loony

owen_rooney.jpg

MICHAEL OWEN has accused Sven Goran Eriksson of sending Wayne Rooney loony.

Owen is the first England star to slam former boss Eriksson.

The crocked Newcastle striker believes Eriksson contributed to Rooney’s red card against Portugal last Saturday by playing him as a lone striker.

Owen said: “You would suggest he’s probably only got angry because of what’s happened in the first hour of that game. It’s a frustrating role to play. Wayne Rooney is one of the best strikers in the world and you’re cutting one of his legs off if you’re playing just one up front.”

Owen’s blast comes in an interview with Matt Smith to be shown during ITV1’s World Cup final coverage.

And it all happened because Eriksson didn't take enough strikers in the first place.;)

I agree. Rooney all alone as the only striker in the front, this just couldn't work.. Just look at him or Ronaldhino or all the other (young) players with so much pressure on their back - it just doesn't work when you have that much responsibility and fear of failing!

Rooney will be forgiven much more quickly than either C. Ronaldo or Sven, that's for sure. Rooney is going to be punished for his actions, whereas the other two will have got away scot-free.

I wish people would quit blaming Cristiano.

If you step on an opposing player's balls than proceed to shove another one away, you get sent off.

The video footage clearly shows that the ref only produced a red card after Ronaldo got involved. It's pretty clear the ref didn't see exactly what had happened at the time, and sent Rooney off for pushing Ronaldo, whatever he said in his report.

Ronaldo's behaviour was reprehensible, regardless of what Rooney might have done.

Ronaldo deserves to be punished too. If that happened, everyone would be satisfied.;)

I wish people would stop defending Ronaldo, for god's sake!! It isn't just about that Rooney incident, it's about the fact that Ronaldo is an arrogant cheater who's lying around in the fuckin' penalty area all the time!

I agree with you that Roanldo should've been punished for his consistent diving, and I'm not defending him for that. But I find it hard to believe that the ref only sent Rooney off when Cristiano told him to.

That whole Rooney/Carvalho/Ronaldo/referee situation will never be solved..

To ME, Rooney didn't do it on purpose. He had to keep the balance and step back, he didn't even look behind.. But it obviously doesn't matter to any referees what I personally think :P And I'm not blaming anyone who says that Rooney DID it on purpose, no-one can say that for sure..

In addition, we can't know whether the referee has only done it because of Ronaldo or not.. who knows.. there's no sense in discussing it because we won't find out!

Von Rooney handed two-game suspension

Wayne Rooney has been suspended for two matches and fined £2,400 by Fifa following his red card against Portugal in the World Cup quarter-final.

World football's governing body found the 20-year-old striker guilty of violent conduct as a result of his stamp on defender Ricardo Carvalho.

The Manchester United star will miss England's Euro 2008 qualifying matches against Andorra and away to Macedonia.

He will be available again for the home game against Macedonia on 7 October.

Rooney insisted there was no malice intended in the second-half incident which happened after he fought off several players to try and win the ball.

He says Carvalho slipped into the area where he was about to place his foot.

Portugal winger Cristiano Ronaldo appeared to encourage the referee to send off his Manchester United team-mate, although he denied this and will not be investigated by Fifa.

Eriksson revealed he had spoken to referee Horacio Elizondo after the game against Portugal, which was decided by a penalty shoot-out, and had "no complaints" about the decision to send off Rooney.

"I spoke to Wayne after the game and he had no intention to do it," said Eriksson.

"I also went to the referee to speak and he was 100% sure it was a red card. He told me he hit the other player and where he was hit so I can't complain about that."

Thanks for the news - considering the fact that he could have been suspended for 5 games, 2 are alright.. I mean, it's still a shame and not fair, in my opinion, but I expected worse!

it's a shame

it's like what they did to frings

there were much worse and more obvious cases but the FIFA keeps punishing the wrong ones.

[remember that bloke choking Klose???!!!]

Well.. If Rooney did it on purpose, it's fair. I personally don't think so, but I understand why it looks like this.. To me, it's ok that the FIFA acts in such cases, but if they do, they should also punish others, that's true..

Well it was a bit weird because throughout the tournament red cards have been shown immediately after an offence has been committed. With Rooney this didn't happen - the ref only indicated a free-kick. Go figure.;)
