Bernard Lewis: August 22 "might well be deemed an appropriate date for the apocalyptic ending of Israel and if necessary of the world"

In the Wall Street Journal (thanks to Sam), world-renowned Middle East scholar Bernard Lewis echoes some observations about possibilities regarding Iran that I made in FrontPage over a week ago:

What is the significance of Aug. 22? This year, Aug. 22 corresponds, in the Islamic calendar, to the 27th day of the month of Rajab of the year 1427. This, by tradition, is the night when many Muslims commemorate the night flight of the prophet Muhammad on the winged horse Buraq, first to "the farthest mosque," usually identified with Jerusalem, and then to heaven and back (c.f., Koran XVII.1). This might well be deemed an appropriate date for the apocalyptic ending of Israel and if necessary of the world. It is far from certain that Mr. Ahmadinejad plans any such cataclysmic events precisely for Aug. 22. But it would be wise to bear the possibility in mind.

A passage from the Ayatollah Khomeini, quoted in an 11th-grade Iranian schoolbook, is revealing. "I am decisively announcing to the whole world that if the world-devourers [i.e., the infidel powers] wish to stand against our religion, we will stand against their whole world and will not cease until the annihilation of all them. Either we all become free, or we will go to the greater freedom which is martyrdom. Either we shake one another's hands in joy at the victory of Islam in the world, or all of us will turn to eternal life and martyrdom. In both cases, victory and success are ours."

one of the most extreme insane nuts is in charge of Iran right now. a true danger to the world, with their support for terrorism, goal to kill the jews and get nuclear weapons...

The man is also a religious nut. he believes muhammad's 12th grandson went down in a well in 940 A.D. and wont come out till israel is wiped off the map and a great war has happened.....and so that islam will rule the earth...a man like this with so much power in a region and on his way to getting nukes is a great danger to all of us.

Apprently a bunch of money mad americans and a poodle are far worse and more evil

Sadly once again a mad man in control of a country who poses a great threat to europe goes appeased and ignored.....atleast its never happened before:rolleyes:

This is an old story....

You do know that he never said that he wanted to actually wipe Israel off the map?

And frankly, danger to the world comes from within' your own government. The scum who lead us will descend us into hell on earth.

He said he wants to wipe them off the map.
Can you post a link to a quote of him saying that

His statement has been slightly spun and used to the advantage of the war-happy governments who would love a chance to take over another middle-eastern country and turn another part of the region into a hell hole (If it's not already).

It's true that Ahmadinejad did talk about removal of the regimes in Israel and in the U.S as something he would want to see. But this is something I want....

However, he never called for the elimination or annihilation of the state of Israel or it's people.

I quote:

"Our dear Imam said that the occupying regime must be wiped off the map and this was a very wise statement. We cannot compromise over the issue of Palestine..."

Sure, he used language that may be he knew would cause a stir but the "wiped off the map" quote has been used over and over within the media and especially on TV news where those 4 particular words are the only thing mentioned about his speech.

Look, I don't exactly agree with Ahmadinejad's running of internal matters within Iran but to substitute a demand for removal of a 'regime' into a demand for removal of a complete state is pretty serious deception and dangerous demagogy.

"But now that I'm on Iran, the threat to Iran, of course -- (applause) -- the threat from Iran is, of course, their stated objective to destroy our strong ally Israel. That's a threat, a serious threat. It's a threat to world peace; it's a threat, in essence, to a strong alliance. I made it clear, I'll make it clear again, that we will use military might to protect our ally, Israel, and -- (applause.)" George W. Bush, US-President, 2006-03-20 in Cleveland (Ohio) in an off-the-cuff speech (source: http://www.whitehouse.gov)

Guess crazy people got to stick together and defend each other or something

President of iran has said he wants to destroy israel and win a major victory for his extreme version of islam....and you're defending him?

Its not shocking that you'd defend that pyschopath. you guys always stick together...

When people say they want to wipe somthing of the map of the world - they usually mean totally destroyed and replaced.

Not a simple of change of regime.

Anyway this Ahmadinejad bloke - i dont know much about him other than his foregin policy.

Give me some good/bad points about him - Apart from the Israel thing

“Our revolution’s main mission is to pave the way for the reappearance of the 12th Imam, the Mahdi,” Ahmadinejad said in the speech to Friday Prayers leaders from across the country.

he believes muhammad 12th grandson is trapped in a well and wont come out til he brings a major war on the earth

"In Curt Weldon's new book, "Countdown to Terror," he notes that this figure "is expected to return and fulfill the long-awaited Islamic apocalypse, one that will reward the faithful and, with catastrophic violence, purge all infidels from the face of the Earth."

so this man needs nuclear weapons and a strong military to do his war. its truly scary what would happen if this extreme nut not unlike hitler gets a nuke. he's not operating like the rest of the world, in his religious beliefs he could use a nuclear weapon and not worry about the world attacking. truly scary

IRAN: STRIVING TOWARDS ISLAMIC APOCALYPSE

- requesting prayer

AUSTRALIA (ANS) -- Ever since being elected President of Iran in June 2005, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has used every means he can not only to drive Iran backwards to the days of the Islamic Revolution, but also to drive it forward to become a world leader in belligerence.

Ahmadinejad is driven by ideology. He believes his divine calling is to hasten the coming of the Mahdi (the Shia messiah, the Hidden 12th Imam) and prepare Iran to receive him. According to the myth, the Mahdi, who supposedly disappeared in the 9th Century, will return from his occultation (concealment) in the well behind the Jamkaran mosque on the outskirts of Qom during a time of world chaos. He will lead the apocalyptic battle between good and evil and establish the global rule of Islam.

Convinced the Mahdi's return is imminent, Ahmadinejad is preparing Iran to receive him. Various infrastructure projects are underway for the Mahdi's benefit, and Ahmadinejad has vowed to rid Iran of Christianity and all other offensive non-Islamic influences and practices. He is also agitating world chaos by inciting anti-Semitism, advocating genocide, bolstering his arsenal, courting dictators and stoking tension across the globe.

According to the myth, when the Mahdi returns from occultation Jesus will return from heaven to be his follower and pray behind him. Jesus will fight against the Dajjal, the deceiver or false messiah. There will be an apocalyptic battle between good and evil and Jesus will declare Islam to be the true religion and convert all Christians to Islam. The world will be transformed into a perfect Islamic society ruled over by the Mahdi. Then the Day of Resurrection will come. Hezbollah, an Iranian asset, holds the same ideology.

While Ahmadinejad has not drawn an explicit connection between his desire to see Israel wiped off the map and an activist belief in the Twelfth Imam’s return, the dots are there to be connected once one understands the tyrannical "logic" behind someone who, perhaps viewing himself as a self-proclaimed deputy for the Twelfth Imam, might wish to effect Mahdi’s return. The deputy would promote Iran’s nuclear capabilities for they are key to effecting chaos in the world. The deputy would also purge diplomats, dozens of deputy ministers and heads of government banks and businesses, and challenge the Iranian ruling clerical establishment. All these moves push the regime toward a "coup d’état" (according to one Iranian source) or at least a constitutional crisis. But a constitutional crisis would be a mere stepping stone for a president for whom the Twelfth Imam does not require an Islamic republic to return.

Doesnt sound like someone who wants peace.

Still he must have some good points about him as a person/leader. I want to hear some

their is NOTHING good about him as a person or leader! he is a evil person who has hurt his nation. the economy is shit and he spends billions on funding hezbollah and other terrorist and making a nuke, while his poor get poorer, alot of iranians dont like him. do you not see this guy is a evil nut bent on killing as many as possible?

Iran had an extra 50 billion this year from oil, most of that was spent on developing nukes, hezbollah and other terrorist and military things, while his country is poor.....a horrible leader and man

Oh....you guys are suckers.

You know that this stuff about the 22nd Of August 'APOCALYPSE' is all crazy?

Ahmadinejad has never said anything about it - yet the news outlets are reporting in some silly 'voodoo' fashion.....just making up the news. They even had to admit that these's no evidence of any such claim by him

It's madness.

in my other post i explained about why Iran is so bold now, because we got rid of their counterweight in Iraq....so we have nobody to blame but ourselves

in my other post i explained about why Iran is so bold now' date=' because we got rid of their counterweight in Iraq....so we have nobody to blame but ourselves[/quote']

they are bold because they know europe wont do anything and america is busy in iraq...we helped create a mess but the buil of the blame relies on IRAN for trying to get nukes? but yes iraq is a major problem that is helping Iran out...but is no reason to look the other way and not stop them.

btw iran would still be developing nukes even if their wasnt an iraq war, they've been working on it for 20 years....
