Hey everybody. I was just wondering (since I've seen a video on Youtube whit Coldplay playing the song Square One)

When something hit me - Chris piano? Or what it is?...Is he using it in every X&Y shows perfomances cause it's a really nice sound comming from it. If you hear and analyzing the mucis you can hear the guitar, the drums, the bass and the piano..all the 4 members equipment + A synthsound in the background in almost everysong on the new album..

 

First I thought that Chris have been recorded that part with the synthizer-sound first and then recorded and mixed the part when he's playing piano.

But after I've seen that video when he plays the synthsound and then shifting to an almost identic sound of a Grand Piano I've began to think over...

 

Is there anybody who knows how they producing their sounds with the piano/keyboard?

And what brand-name Chris equipment are on the new X&Y?

Maybe you've seen it live or something...?

You know that chris has got a digital piano ?

It's a yahama .. Don't know exactly the name further :)

But he produces the sounds with that.

Like the organ with fix you, and the strings+piano with politik at the bridge etc :)

And maybe i think if it's just like a keyboard, he puts midi sounds into his piano and can play with this.

Yamaha GT20

 

Yeah, think he's got a Yamaha GT20 or something. Well, in the Square-One video I saw (:D), I actually saw Guy Barryman playing the intro on a strange looking piano with rats on a big panel - Looked expensive...An awesome sound and not made by Chris piano. Íf it's now Guy who's making the sound it's some other guy the band hired or something...but well, the one who's playin' on the strange piano just putting down one key and controls the sound with the instrument's rats and lever...Do you if they use that kind of piano in other songs? Or is it just used in Square One?

Guy plays the intro also on that 'keyboard' do you mean that instrument ?

I'm pretty sure the dude meant Guy's mini keyboard that they use for some synth and SoS live.

Coldplay use pre-recorded backing tracks on nearly all of their songs. There's absolutely nothing wrong with this, as most bands do it. In Square One you may even notice that some of Jonny's guitar parts are pre-recorded and all the string parts and strange clicking noises are also pre-recorded.

 

Heres what i said in the other thread:

As far as I can tell, all members have click tracks in their ears (well at least Chris and Will) and I noticed in the Live 2003 DVD that Chris presses a button on his wireless receiver (back pocket :P) at the start of Clocks, probably starting the backing track. Quite risky too, since he wasnt sat at the piano when he pressed it...

 

Its also probably fair to say that the band couldnt exactly reproduce some of the sounds in the backing tracks, because they are quite unique and require computers/technology of some sort...such as in Talk. On the other hand, I could be wrong but I'm not too bothered because it sounds amazing and they wrote the songs so they can do what they want with them.

 

I've often thought how an amature band could reproduce this easily and cheaply. One idea I came up with was to produce a stereo audio file (say mp3) with the left side a click track and the right side the backing track. Split the output, sending the left side to the band and the right side to the mixer for the audience to hear. Of course, if you had a laptop it would be easier :P

So you mean that Chris doesn't play EVERYTHING on piano in live shows, they use backing tracks sometimes?
