The Bored Generation

Featured Replies

Yeah, we've had the Love Generation, that was a long time ago (60's flower licking hippies), since then we had the Hate Generation (80's punk to the late stages of deodorant ridden 90's grunge), that seemed to drag on eh? And then came that awkward stage of not really knowing what to do next...

And I'm bored.

This thread is about a lot of things

So interpret it however the hell you like.

Does it seem sometimes that if you arent doing something fun, mind altering, sexually stimulating, brain warping, then you are completely bored?

Whats becoming of us when we spend hours infront of a PC on a messageboard or on MSN or myspace, repeatadly typing in the same keyphrases that accustom our current mentality and everyday life:

Im bored

Board's dead

Anyone there?

Its kinda frightening to me.

Now our parents, people who we can relate to on life because they are here with us now (Or basically anyone living a generation or two older then you) lived a childhood with one black and white TV with barely anything interesting on it, they'd be allowed to watch it for 30 minutes a night, they had no computers, playstations or mobile phones, and if kids in todays reality had to live the same life, suicide on the cards?

Its a scary prospect.

But I do believe we'd eventually get used to it, we'd become accustomed to being able to deal with simply not having anything to do and for once not to consistently have to disrupt our natural thoughts with overly leisurely activies that do not feed our creativity in anyway.

I have a theory that those kids who cant sit in a room for more then 2 minutes without having to: pick up their mobile phone and text someone, check their myspace's or IM's, play on games consoles, (And at the final stage of having nothing to do...) write blatheringly to their friends on messageboards or forums about how they havent got anything to do...

Well, those kids cant rest with their thoughts for more then 2 minutes, because they may actually have to concern themselves with the future, rather then things that distract them from it.

Its a shame I'm one of them.

I think "boredom" is all in the mind. With all the media and leisure possibilities available these days, I believe it's virtually impossible to have too much time on your hands, unless perhaps you're from an extremely deprived background (in which case you probably don't have time to be bored because you're too busy trying to "survive").

I think if you can't find something satisfying to do with the time available to you, there must be something lacking in one's make-up.

How each person finds enjoyment is up to the individual, of course (whether it's through sport, another activity or something more sedentary such as chatting on here, gaming or creating and running your own website), but surely there must be something you can do for "entertainment".;)

In my case I have running, tennis, TV/film, music and the internet to occupy any spare-time I have.

That's not too mention concerts and the odd holiday here and there (next week's skiing, for example).

I completely agree that boredom shouldnt exist, but why then do young people constantly find themselves with nothing to do?

I wasnt really talking about myself on this topic, well not lately, but sometimes I do get bored. I should be doing something beneficial like research, but instead I choose to dumb down my mind by just sitting around (Sometimes doing, literally nothing, not sleeping, netting or watching TV, just sitting around).

It takes about a half an hour before I realise I'd go pretty crazy just doing nothing all day, and then I do choose to do something but the point is, I'd rather do nothing. And it appears that most people agree with me, from a general standpoint.

I have too much leisure and not enough work lately, and even my work is leisure (I enjoy working at the bar, and stewarding is of course great fun) so when it comes to running out of fun things to do, I get pretty bored and need to look hard for something new and exciting to get into.

Just restless. I can imagine going through a change and being able to find myself more reserved and composed as you do and be able to find interest and comfort in things, even if they arent always wildly fascinating, and I guess when it comes to such things like holidays and such you get to really appreciate them.

I was supposed to be going skiing this week but it was planned about a month ago when we got told it probably wont snow. Ah well.

I am sat here in between calls. I never normally get bored, but there are only so many times you can read this board, read the news, update your celebdaq etc.

well.....this reminds me exactly of a friend of mine (no it's not me....it's really a friend...ahha)....we talked about this the other day...

she said:"Damn as soon as I am at home and not with my boyfriend (she is OFTEN in trouble with...) I get so bored that I need to call one of you!"

actually I was a bit shocked by this at first.....ok I won't say that I don't belong to this "generation" but at least I've got some hobbies like music.....and sure I still get bored although I should do things for school...

hmm.....I think she plays poker at the PC 5 hours per day...

I think it's great if you can find something "new and exciting" to do, as long as this search doesn't end up as a constant "craving". If it does, it will be very difficult for the person concerned to ever be satisfied and at peace with the world.

I think it's important to find some things which you can be content to do whenever the more exciting things aren't on the horizon. In other words, something to fall back on.

That's where the running, internet and "video media" come in as far as I'm concerned.

This evening, for example, I'm probably going to go and catch a movie. Tomorrow evening I have tennis and on Thursday I'll almost certainly go for a run.

On Friday evening my skiing trip begins.

As far as the skiing's concerned, there's always a bit of a risk as far as the snow's concerned, but if you aim for one of the high resorts, you normally won't have a problem.

I'm not expecting the conditions to be superb, but there is some snow, and you never know when more might turn up. I also booked last-minute, and therefore bagged a bargain.

Are you now working in a call-centre??

And what's a "celebdaq"??

See, I limit what I put my time into to avoid becoming overwhelmed, when all that stuff does get busy/time-consuming. But when those things don't provide too much, which happens occasionally, I kinda sit there with nothing to do. At that point, I usually start writing or drawing. But given that I'm not always too creative or inspired, it doesn't always take time.

I wonder how long it'll take Reg to find this thread?? She's an expert on the subject!!:P

did you watch fight club?

Wow, my best friend is like your friend. She goes crazy if she doesn't have anyone to hang with.

I usually get bored when I come home. Being surrounded by 300 people for 8 hours winds me up and when I get home I'm like, "There's nothing to do..."

I have hobbies, it's not like I sit here for 5 hours straight (often). I like music and art- and sports! I seem to be bored when I'm not moving, talking, or doing something creative...

*Ahem*

The Boredom Club thread.

did you watch fight club?

Yes.

I's hard to imagine how far we've come in terms of technology and everything else that provides us of something to do. I can't imagine sitting around with just a board game or a television with limited channels or whatever.

Sure, they help pass the time but you only turn to them when you've got nothing better to do.

It's hard to think that that's what people a few decades ago would do for fun.

Now, we always have to be stimulated, always have to have something to do. Even when you're relaxing, you might have some music on, or if you're waiting to cross at an intersection, there's a large screen advertising a product to look at.

I totally agree.

I didn't get a computer until i was about 12 or so and then the internet at about 17. I wouldn't say I grew up in the internet age. It was more so at university I realised properly what it was and how we could use it. I think of the kids now who have grown up with the internet, MySpace, music downloads, blogs...

It kind of goes back to the early internet days with online communities and the like. We seem to be forging our own online lives that then merge into our actual lives. The internet has become more of a social tool rather than a place to share information. And as such means that quite often, 'real life' just isn't enough for a lot of people anymore. It's easier than dealing with what's actually happening in the world. It's pure escapism.

And kids today will often find it easier to bury themselves in the TV, computer, xbox...whatever...to hide from whatever's going on in their lives. We might say that technology can relieve bordom, but it also causes it!

New technology is supposed to make our lives easier by "simplifying" things, for example a camera and internet access on your phone. But really it just makes your life more more complex because of all these things. And when we don't have this new technology around us, we get bored and find ourselves not having anything to do.

I think "boredom" is all in the mind. With all the media and leisure possibilities available these days' date=' I believe it's virtually [i']impossible [/i]to have too much time on your hands...

I see where this is coming from, but I tend to disagree. As Reilly's first post put forward, we have become too reliant on technology to pass the time. I am a huge offender of doing this. I hate to say it, but half the time boredom can be solved just by talking to people, being social.

The universe was created perfect, yet curiosity came forth for the search for greater things and now some people may say that we are advancing as a race, and others will say we have continually became worse, as technology advanced.

I choose to dumb down my mind by just sitting around (Sometimes doing' date=' literally nothing, not sleeping, netting or watching TV, just sitting around).[/quote']

That is the Australian lifestyle in a nutshell.

One of the most enjoyable things for me, is just to sit outside, on a summer's day and just take in the world. Grab a cool drink and maybe sit by the pool with a mate. More than once me and my mate have sat down outside to have a chat or something, and said absolutely nothing for a whole hour. Some people might find this boring, but it is one of the best things ever.

If I could ever do something like just taking off all of my clothes and lying in the middle of a field somewhere in the middle of nowhere, I asure you that would be ten times more enjoyable than any videogame. And most people, after actually experiencing that, would probably agree.

And that is one of the main reasons why I believe humans screwed up.

People can't ALWAYS be stimulated.

And even in all the generations mentioned in the beginning, they had bored times too. People weren't 24 hours a freakin day DOING something. Boredom will always and forever exist or else we are robots with no differences about stimulation to be in question.

But it's true that stimulation now a days isn't a walk in the park, or shooting air riffles out in the FRESH AIR. It's being cooped inside doing anything but quality things.

I could talk about it all day, but it makes me sad to think I have no solutions for them or this dilema. I am glad that I wrap 6o hours of my week into hard work and am not one of those kids. I spend designated times here and doing other small things that aren't world changing actions. (i.e...texting, msn, message boards).

IUUUUPPPPIIIIIIIII :cheesy:

Too true Sam, too true. I wish I had never found technology. I'm so addicted to it now I barely get outside as much and actually do stuff. When I'm bored I usually try to learn something new to fill in the time like recently, the guitar. I also find that the better/faster technolgy gets the less time we spend using it leaving us bored more often. :freak::glasses2::borg:

*Ahem*

The Boredom Club thread.

I hadnt noticed it (Well, acknowledged it) but if you read my actual topic then you'll see that its a thread such as that which I find so worrying, which has lead to me writing this topic.

The Boredom Club is full of posts from people expressing that they are bored, this topic is looking at why so many kids these days seem to be part of this Boredom Revolution. Having the word 'Bored' in both titles does not mean its in any way the same topic but rather, The Boredom Club is a great example of what troubles me in this topic.

And to me its like a depression, sitting there, 'bored', thinking you have nothing to do, thats really saddening and if it went on and on every day after school and on weekends, would lead to serious anxiety.

Sam that souds mega cool but thats if you have nice weather, and thats if you can be left alone with your thoughts. I can do it if Im in a good mood (Which is rare lately) but usually I'm looking for excuses to get away from my own mind, so thats really just not an option until I start cheering up.
